The wide range of geographical cocoa production areas and the increasing consumption trend towards single origin products induced the necessity to verify and certify cocoa beans origin for quality assurance purposes. In this study cocoa beans of various origins were examined by machine olfaction and machine vision techniques. Fifty-nine fermented and dried Forastero cocoa beans from 23 different geographical origins (Africa, Americas, Southeast Asia) were investigated using Proton Transfer Reaction-Quadrupole interface-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometry and Hyperspectral Imaging to elucidate the geographical information in the beans. The volatile and spectral fingerprints showed the same tendency in clustering samples from Africa separate from those from the Americas. High variability was observed for the Southeast Asian samples, which is most likely related to differences in fermentation. Machine olfaction and machine vision characterization provided a similar degree of separation but are complementary rapid techniques, which may be further developed for use in practical settings.

Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea is a fungal disease that can determine significant economic losses of apple during the storage phase. An alternative to reduce the use of traditional synthetic fungicides is to employ the yeast Starmerella bacillaris as biological control agent (BCA), also with positive effect on apple juice fermentation for the production of cider. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the safety of 16 S. bacillaris strains and their ability to control B. cinerea. In addition, the fermentation performances in apple juice and the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) profile were assessed, both in single-strain and in sequential fermentations with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The in vitro assays showed that all S. bacillaris strains can be considered safe from the analyzed virulence factors, and were able to significantly constrain the growth of B. cinerea, reducing mycelial growth of 50% in dualculture and of 90% through VOCs. Moreover, in vivo antagonistic assays revealed a visible decrease of gray mold rot symptoms on apples confirming the potential of S. bacillaris as BCA. GC-MS analysis of the ciders obtained showed increased concentrations in the sequential fermentation of some higher alcohols and terpenes, positively correlated with the cider aromatic quality, and suggested the involvement of benzyl alcohol, known for its antimicrobial action, in the biocontrol efficacy.

A series of hybrid antimicrobial compounds were prepared by carboxylic acid protection of 6-aminopenicillanic acid using benzyl alcohol and thionyl chloride succeeded by azide displacement using trifluoromethanesulfonyl azide in dichloromethane. The azide thus formed was reacted with substituted alkynes to furnish benzyl-protected penicillin-triazole conjugates. Benzyl deprotection of the conjugates resulted in furnishing PNTCs under water methanol mixture using Pd/C as a catalyst. The PNTCs (7a-j) formed were screened for in vitro antibacterial potency against pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes and antifungal potency against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus clavatus. Further antimicrobial evaluation revealed compounds 7c, 7d, 7e, 7g, and 7i to be the most compounds of the series with minimum inhibitory concentration value for antibacterial in the range 0.5-50 mu g/mL and for antifungal in the range 9-300 mu g/mL. Toxicological analysis documented for compounds 7c, 7d, 7e, 7g, and 7i revealed compound 7i to be the most promising member of the series with 1000 and 500 mg/kg LD50, and no-observed-adverse-effect level to facilitate future clinical studies of the same.

The possibility of using maghemite (gamma-iron(III) oxide) as a catalyst for the oxidation of alcohols with atmospheric oxygen has been explored. It has been shown that maghemite is active in the oxidation of benzyl alcohols. In the case of benzyl alcohol, the oxidation leads to benzaldehyde with nearly 100% selectivity. It has been found that the addition of small amounts of basic cocatalysts can substantially increase the yield of the target products.

2-Functionalised pyrroles exhibit considerable synthetic utility. Herein, the synthesis and reactivity of 2-thionoester (-C(S)OR) pyrroles is reported. 2-Thionoester pyrroles were synthesised using a Knorr-type approach from aliphatic starting materials. 2-Thionoester pyrroles were reduced to the corresponding 2-formyl pyrroles, or the deuterated formyl variant, in one step using RANEY (R) nickel, thereby removing the need for the much-utilised hydrolysis/decarboxylation/formylation steps that are typically required to convert Knorr-type 2-carboxylate pyrroles into 2-formyl pyrroles. 2-Thionoester pyrroles proved tolerant of typical functional group interconversions for which the parent 2-carboxylate pyrroles have become known.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based derivatives have been found to be promising heterogeneous catalysts for organic transformations. Herein, hollow-structure Cu-MOFs derived by reduction of Cu-3(BTC)(2) (BTC=1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate; denoted as RCB) were prepared by using hydrazine hydrate as a reducing agent under various conditions. The influence of hydrazine hydrate induced the structure of Cu-3(BTC)(2) and led to dynamic variation in the interior and exterior as well as oxidation states of the Cu ion. The synthesized materials were characterized by SEM, TEM, N-2 sorption isotherms, XRD, and XPS. The product of the catalytic reaction was observed by GC-MS. In addition, the prepared RCBs were found to have excellent catalytic activity and selectivity for benzyl alcohol oxidation when assisted by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO).

Sustainable Development Goal 3.1 calls for a reduction of the maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. The most important cause of maternal mortality is post-partum haemorrhage (PPH). Oxytocin injections and misoprostol tablets are medicines of first choice for the management of PPH in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Unfortunately, both substances are chemically unstable, and previous studies have revealed serious quality problems of these medicines in LMICs. The present study is the first report on their quality in Rwanda. From 40 randomly selected health facilities (hospitals, health centers, retail pharmacies and private clinics) in different parts of Rwanda, as well as from six wholesalers and government stores, oxytocin injections and misoprostol tablets were collected. Oxytocin storage temperatures in the health facilities were monitored for six months using temperature data loggers, and found to correctly follow the storage requirements stated by the manufacturers (2-8 degrees C, or room temperature) with few minor deviations. Oxytocin injections (57 samples, representing seven batches of four brands) were tested for their oxytocin content and pH value according to the United States Pharmacopeia. Twenty-four samples from three European manufacturers passed all tests. However, all nine samples of one batch of a Chinese manufacturer showed an excessive content of oxytocin (range 117.2-121.5% of the declared amount). Another batch of the same manufacturer showed extreme variations of the concentration of the preservative benzyl alcohol. Misoprostol tablets (25 samples, representing ten batches of six brands) were tested for content and dissolution according to the International Pharmacopoeia. Fifteen samples passed, but all 10 samples of two brands from India failed with extreme deviations, containing only 42.5-48.7% of the stated amount of misoprostol. In conclusion, oxytocin quality in Rwanda was better than reported from other African countries. However, two extremely substandard brands of misoprostol tablets were found. The Rwandan authorities reacted quickly and efficiently, and recalled these substandard medicines from the market. For oxytocin and misoprostol, with their well-known problems of quality and stability, procurement should possibly be restricted to medicines which are WHO-prequalified or which have been manufactured in countries with stringent regulatory authorities.

Polydopamine/MIL-53(Fe) (PDA/MIL-53(Fe)) nanocomposite photocatalysts were synthesized with PDA (PDA = polydopamine) and MIL-53(Fe) using a nature-mimicking method. The structures, morphologies, optical properties and thermal stabilities of all the synthesized materials were characterized using a series of methods. In particular, the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge significantly increased after the incorporation of PDA into MIL-53(Fe), which resulted in an elevated photocatalytic activity of PDA/MIL-53(Fe) compared with the control groups. The PDA/MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposite could accelerate the conversion of primary or secondary alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes or ketones with a high specificity by direct hole-involving oxidation under visible-light irradiation and room temperature. The catalysts could be cycled at least three times without a significant decrease in the catalytic activity and this result showed the excellent recyclability and stability of the catalysts.

BACKGROUND Seaweed application has been defined as a novel technique capable of improving the content of secondary metabolites in berries. There is limited available information about its effects on must and wine volatile composition. This field trial aimed to study the effects of biostimulation to Tempranillo grapevines through anAscophyllum nodosumfertilizer applied at a low dosage (Ld) and high dosage (Hd) on must and wine volatile compounds over two seasons. RESULTS Ld treatment scarcely affected must and wine volatile compounds in both seasons. Hd foliar application increased the content in musts of several individual terpenoids, C(13)norisoprenoids, esters, benzenoids, alcohols, carbonyl compounds and C6 compounds in 2018. Must yeast assimilable nitrogen conditioned the production of wine volatile compounds. CONCLUSION These results suggest that seaweeds applications can act as elicitors in Tempranillo, triggering the synthesis of several compounds by the plant in musts during a season with a high rainfall and relative humidity. The increasing use of functional aramids in a wide array of applications and the inert nature of aramids against conventional dye and print methods requires developing new dyeing methods. This study aims to use environmentally friendly method with a cationic dye as an alternative for dyeing para-aramid fabrics. Experiments used a multi-factorial design with functions of pretreatment, dye solvent (water and/or glycerol) and auxiliary chemical additives (swelling agent and surfactant) and a sequential experimentation methodology. The most effective dyeing procedures involved the following steps: (i) pretreatments of the fabrics with soybean oil and nonthermal plasma (NTP), (ii) using water at T = 100 degrees C as the dye solvent, and (iii) omitting other chemical additives. With a commercial cationic dye, these conditions achieved a color strength in K/S value of 2.28, compared to similar to 1 for untreated samples. FTIR analysis revealed that a functional network formed on the fibers and yarns of the fabrics by chemical reactions of excited plasma species with double bonds in the soybean oil molecules was responsible for significantly improving the color strength. These results extend the potential uses of a renewable material (soybean oil) and an environmentally friendly technology (NTP) to improve the dyeing of para-aramid textiles and reduce the use of harsh dye chemicals.
