Polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) has been widely used as a nanotemplate material for the block copolymer lithography. Thus, development of a simple method to functionalize the inherently inactive PS-b-PMMA is of considerable interest to expand its potential applications. Herein, we demonstrate that titanium alkoxide-catalyzed transesterification can be a versatile chain-end functionalization method for proton-terminated PS-b-PMMA. Starting from anionically synthesized PMMA and PS-b-PMMA, the ester-side chain of the MMA unit at the omega-chain end was selectively transesterified in the presence of various alcohols with the aid of the corresponding titanium alkoxides to yield the end-functionalized PMMAs and PS-b-PMMAs. A wide range of alcohols containing various functional groups (e.g., alkyl chains, aromatic rings, and fluorocarbon chains) were utilized for terminal-selective transesterification. Clickable groups (e.g., pentafluorobenzyl and azido) were also successfully incorporated into the omega-terminal MMA unit, which serves as the reactive site for further modification. Importantly, even the hydroxy-functionalized polymer poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether could be used for the terminal-selective transesterification of PS-b-PMMA, yielding a polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) triblock terpolymer. The present transesterification system can be a powerful tool for chain-end functionalization of the inactive chain-end of PS-b-PMMA, providing insight into the effect of the chain-end structure on microphase separation behavior.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered zeolites are new forms of 3D zeolite frameworks. They can be pillared to form more open porous structures with increased access for reactants that are too big for the micropores of zeolites. The current pillaring procedure, however, requires intercalation of pillaring precursors by dispersing 2D zeolite in an alkoxide liquid and hydrolizing entrapped alkoxide to form inorganic oxide pillars in an aqueous alkaline solution. Both steps use excess solvents, generate significant waste, and require multiple synthesis and separation steps. Here we report a vapor-phase pillarization (VPP) process to produce pillared zeolites from 2D layered zeolite structures. The VPP process has similar to 100% efficiency of alkoxide usage in the intercalation step, requires less (and, in some cases, zero) water addition in the hydrolysis step, does not require separation for product recovery, and generates no liquid waste. Furthermore, synthesis of pillared zeolites via the VPP process can be accomplished within a single apparatus with one-time operation. The pillared zeolite prepared by the VPP method preserved the zeolitic layered structure as well as acidity and showed enhancement in catalytic alkylation of mesitylene with benzyl alcohol compared to 2D layered zeolite without pillarization treatment.

The dynamic pattern of volatiles during Pinot Noir winemaking in monsoon climate with yeast extracellular extract (EE) treatment was analyzed. EE from selected Pichia fermentans and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa strains, and almond beta-glucosidase were added after 12-h alcohol fermentation, and the volatiles were determined every 24 h by GC-MS. After 6-month storage, wine aroma was evaluated instrumentally as well as by well-trained panelists. Results showed that enzyme treatments improved the contents of both varietal and fermentative volatiles. The levels of C-6 compounds, terpenes, and higher alcohols increased constantly during alcohol fermentation, whereas acetates, short and medium chain fatty acid ethyl esters, phenylethyls, and fatty acids increased first, followed by gradual decrease. EE treatment retarded the decrease of fruity ester content in wine. Mathematical regression between wine aroma and volatiles showed that the relatively higher contents of acetates, ethyl esters, and C-13-norisoprenoids in 6-month EE-treated wine were responsible for the improvement in floral aroma intensity.

A general visible light photocatalytic protocol for the synthesis of imines via a two-step one-pot route on alizarin red S (ARS)-sensitized TiO2 was uncovered. This efficient synthesis protocol involves one step of the highly selective formation of aldehydes from the oxidation of alcohols with O-2 on ARS-sensitized TiO2 photocatalyst, and a subsequent step of condensation of newly formed aldehydes with various amines on TiO2 to afford imines in one pot. Anatase TiO2 provides a versatile platform for catalytic amounts of ARS (0.67 mol%) to facilitate the electron transfer from dye traversing its conduction band to O-2 under green LED irradiation. Moreover, the Lewis acid sites of TiO2 can promote the formation of imines from aldehydes and amines in very high isolated yields. We took advantage of both the photocatalytic and catalytic properties of TiO2 to significantly expand the scope of imines. Our work suggests that the synthetic applications of TiO2 photocatalysis can be achievable under mild conditions by exploring the excellent functionalities of TiO2.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the free and bound volatiles in the Rubus coreanus (RC) fruits of different ripening stages. Thirty-seven free volatiles and 28 bound volatiles were identified in RC fruit for the first time. The contents of free (E)-2-hexen-1-ol, 1-hexanol, 2-heptanol, beta-myrcene, (E), (Z)-beta-ocimene, allo-ocimene, linalool, cosmene, alpha-terpineol, methyl salicylate, eugenol, and beta-damascenone remain high, and increased with the ripening of RC fruit. The contents of 11 bound volatiles decreased during the ripening, and became lower than the contents of their free volatiles in the ripe fruit. The ripe black fruit is closely correlated to the free nonanal, sulcatone, (E)-2-hexen-1-ol, 1-hexanol, 2-heptanol, 1-heptanol, 1-nonanol, (E)-linalool oxide (furanoid), and beta-damascenone, and bound (E)-2-hexen-1-ol and (E)- beta-ocimene. The ripe RC fruit is more fruity and floral than unripe fruit. The gradually hydrolyzed bound volatiles can enhance the fruity, floral, and herbaceous odors. Practical applications Rubus coreanus (RC) fruit is a functional natural fruit. Both fresh and processed Rubus coreanus fruits including jams, confitures, wine, yogurt, vinegar, and beverages, as well as ingredients in functional foods or cosmetics have been extensively consumed. Benzimidazolone constitutes the core structure of numerous pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, inhibitors, pigments, herbicides, and fine chemicals. Amination of hydrocarbons is an attractive tool for the creation of nitrogen-containing products. However, the multiple steps, harsh conditions, and low atom efficiencies often present in these reactions remain challenging. We present a multicomponent synthesis of functional benzimidazolones from arylamines, dialkylamines, and alcohols, acting via the sequence of copper-catalyzed oxidative tandem C-H aminations and alkyl deconstructive carbofunctionalization. The catalytic transformation forms multiple bonds in one single operation, uses readily available feedstocks and a naturally abundant Cu/O-2 catalyst system, has broad substrate scope, avoids pre-installation of aminating agents and directing groups, and provides high chemo- and regioselectivity, resulting in direct functionalization of inert C-H and C-C bonds via single-electron oxidation-induced activation mode. This platform can be expected to provide structurally diverse products with interesting biological, chemical, and physical properties.

In the present work, a temperature and pH-responsive hybrid catalytic system using copolymer-capped mesoporous silica particles with metal nanoparticles is proposed. The poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)(DMAEMA)-co-N-tert-butyl acrylamide) (TBA)) shell on mesoporous silica SBA-15 was obtained through free radical polymerization. Then, copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) decorated SBA-15/copolymer hybrid materials were synthesized using the NaBH4 reduction method. SBA-15 was functionalized with trimethoxylsilylpropyl methacrylate (TMSPM) and named TSBA. It was found that the CuNPs were uniformly dispersed in the mesoporous channels of SBA-15, and the hybrid catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance for the selective oxidation of different substituted benzyl alcohols in water using H2O2 as an oxidant at room temperature. The dual (temperature and pH-) responsive behaviors of the CuNPs/p(DMAEMA-co-TBA)/TSBA catalyst were investigated using the dynamic light scattering technique. The conversion of catalytic products and selectivity were calculated using gas chromatographic techniques, whereas the molecular structure of the products was identified using H-1 and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity toward the oxidation of alcohol to aldehyde in an aqueous medium below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and pKa values (7-7.5) of the copolymer. The main advantages of the hybrid catalyst, as compared to the existing catalysts, are outstanding alcohol conversion (up to 99%) for a short reaction time (1 h), small amount of the catalyst (5 mg), and good recyclability equal to at least five times.

Superhydrophobic materials have attracted considerable scientific interest owing to their excellent properties such as self-cleaning ability, which are attractive for real-world applications. However, challenges still exist in realising smart superhydrophobic surfaces with reversible properties. Although there are many studies on reversible surfaces, most of them have tedious preparation processes or are difficult to achieve, in which the structure requires continuous stimuli to be maintained. Hence, we propose a novel and simple strategy to obtain superhydrophobic/hydrophobic reversible smart materials. Anthracene-terminated photo/thermo dual-response polyurethane was prepared as a dynamic substrate whose wrinkled structure could appear and disappear reversibly through dimerisation and depolymerisation of the anthracene groups. Thereafter, modified SiO2 sol was applied as the hydrophobic coating because the aggregation of SiO2 produces micro-nano structures on the surface wrinkles. The good synergistic effects of the wrinkles and nanoparticles enhance the roughness, realising superhydrophobic materials. These smart materials can reversibly convert into a hydrophobic or superhydrophobic wetting state, induced by UV exposure or heating, in which both states stable under normal conditions. Moreover, these superhydrophobic materials have many attractive properties, such as self-cleaning, durability, and environmental friendliness. The novel method used to fabricate dynamic wrinkles also has many potential applications in other areas such as triboelectric nanogenerator reversible switching of adhesion, and dynamic microfluidic channels.

The isomerization of dienyl alcohols and polyenyl alkyl ethers catalyzed by TBD (1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene) under metal-free conditions is presented. Two reaction pathways have been observed. For dienyl alcohols, the reaction proceeds by a [1,3]-proton shift to give gamma,delta-unsaturated ketones exclusively. Here we report a novel approach to synthesize Au NPs immobilized on N-doped carbon materials. In this strategy, an ionic liquid (IL) [Bmim][AuCl4] was selected as the precursor for Au NPs and porous framework of ZIF-8 as the host for the IL. Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N-2 physical absorption and Fourier infrared spectra confirmed that the IL was successfully incorporated in the ZIF-8 pores. Followed by a thermal treatment under inert atmosphere, highly dispersed Au NPs were obtained and stabilized by nitrogen species from the carbonization of organic ligand in the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The [Bmim][AuCl4]@ ZIF-8-6.25%-T materials exhibited high catalytic activity for the selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols, affording excellent yields (up to > 99%) under atmospheric air and base-free conditions. Catalytic reaction along with catalyst characterization results revealed a strong interaction between Au NPs and N species. TEM, XRD and XPS characterization results further suggested that the N species could not only prevent the Au NPs from aggregation, but also further enhance the reaction activity.
