Polydopamine/MIL-53(Fe) (PDA/MIL-53(Fe)) nanocomposite photocatalysts were synthesized with PDA (PDA = polydopamine) and MIL-53(Fe) using a nature-mimicking method. The structures, morphologies, optical properties and thermal stabilities of all the synthesized materials were characterized using a series of methods. In particular, the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge significantly increased after the incorporation of PDA into MIL-53(Fe), which resulted in an elevated photocatalytic activity of PDA/MIL-53(Fe) compared with the control groups. The PDA/MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposite could accelerate the conversion of primary or secondary alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes or ketones with a high specificity by direct hole-involving oxidation under visible-light irradiation and room temperature. The catalysts could be cycled at least three times without a significant decrease in the catalytic activity and this result showed the excellent recyclability and stability of the catalysts.

We report the synthesis of uniformly dispersed and stable palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) on N-doped graphitic carbon (N-C) derived from benign chitosan. The Pd@N-C nanocatalyst was synthesized by carbonization of Pd-chitosan complex at 800 degrees C under a nitrogen atmosphere, wherein chitosan obtained from fishery bio-waste served as carbon and nitrogen source. The as-synthesized nanocatalyst was characterized by several techniques; the elemental mapping by SEM and TEM analysis confirmed the uniform distribution of the Pd nanoparticles on the surface of N-doped carbon with an average size in the range of 2-6 nm. Temperature programmed chemisorption studies showed 32.27% Pd metal surface area available for reaction. This catalyst with low loading of active palladium metal was used for the hydrogenation of various reducible groups including > C = C < , > C C < , -NO2, -CHO and epoxides at room temperature (30 degrees C) and moderate H-2 pressure (5 bar). The catalyst offered nearly complete conversion with > 99% selectivity towards desired product. The excellent performance of the catalyst may be attributed to the dual role of N-rich carbon source which acts as a stabilization platform for palladium nanoparticles and also provides a basic environment. Furthermore, the catalyst can be easily recovered and recycled for five cycles without any significant loss in catalytic activity and selectivity.

This work focused on how roasting changed the chemical components of chili (Capsicum annuum L.) seeds and how it affected the stability of chili seed oils during storage. The oils from chili seeds before and after roasting treatments were stored at 63 degrees C for 30 days and then analyzed. Results showed that roasting changed the main sugars compositions and amino acid compositions (total content decreased from 15.9 to 7.4%), which confirmed that it could form brown pigments and volatile flavor compounds in pepper seeds after roasting. Compared with oil from unroasted seeds, oils from roasted seeds had greater oxidative stability and maintained greater antioxidant capacity during storage. These effects were possibly due to the synergistic of the neo-formed products by Maillard reaction, vitamin E, and other bioactive components. This investigation showed that roasting treatment could be considered as an appropriate method for extending the storage stability of chili seed oils.

A series of variously functionalized selenium-containing compounds were purposely synthesized and evaluated against a panel of cancer cell lines. Most of the compounds showed an interesting cytotoxicity profile with compound 5 showing a potent activity on MCF7 cells. The ethyl amino derivative 5 acts synergistically with cis-platin and inhibits the GST enzyme with a potency that well correlates with the cytotoxicity observed in MCF7 cells. A computational analysis suggests a possible binding mode on the GST enzyme. As the main outcome of the present study, the ethyl amino derivative 5 emerged as a valid lead compound for further, future developments.

Naloxone is an opioid antagonist with high affinity for -opioid receptor, and for this reason it is used for the emergency treatment of opioid overdose. Originally, it was available only as an injectable product. However, for the ease of administration, intranasal (IN) formulations have also become available. These IN formulations contain preservatives and stabilizers such as benzalkonium chloride (BKC), benzyl alcohol (BA), and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Some of these ingredients are known to affect permeability of drugs. This study focuses on investigating the effect of formulation variables including choice of preservatives, stabilizer, and pH on the permeability and stability of naloxone IN formulations. The in vitro permeability of naloxone was evaluated employing EpiAirway tissue-mounted Ussing chambers. BKC was found to enhance the apparent permeability (P-app) of naloxone significantly (p<0.05) at very low concentration, while BA caused similar enhancement at a much higher concentration. EDTA was found to decrease P-app of naloxone by lowering the pH, and the P-app of naloxone was found to decrease approximately 51-fold with the decrease in formulation pH from 6.0 to 4.0. The product stability was, however, found optimal only below pH 5.0. Thus, selection of formulation ingredients, buffering agent, and pH of IN formulation is a balancing act for achieving desired permeability and optimal stability to achieve reasonable shelf life of naloxone IN formulation. Effects of grape maturity, maceration length during winemaking and interaction of both of them on physicochemical parameters, phenolic and volatile composition were investigated in tropical Syrah wines with the aim of finding the best conditions to produce wines that are rich in phenols and positive aroma active compounds. A headspace solid phase micro extraction and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) method was improved and validated for the analysis of 41 volatiles. Principal component analysis (PCA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA)-PCA coupled with inspection of statistically significant loadings were important to access the effects of maturation and maceration on wine composition. Wines made from riper grapes (21-23 degrees Brix) stood out in relation to color intensity, total phenolic compounds, and presented high levels of anthocyanins, flavonols, procyanidin A2, and linalool (floral). Thirty days of maceration were linked to higher levels of some flavan-3-ols, gallic acid, a few esters (fruity) and alcohols, (E)-nerolidol (floral), while nonanoic acid (unpleasant aroma) reduced its concentration with prolonged maceration.

SnOct(2) (Sn(II) 2-ethylhexanoate) catalyzed ROPs of L-lactide were performed in bulk with eight different alcohols as initiators. The time was varied between 1 h and 24 h for all initiators. For two initiators the temperature was also lowered to 115 degrees C. Even-numbered chains were predominantly formed in all polymerizations at short times, but the rate of transesterification (e.g. even/odd equilibration) and the molecular weight distribution were found to depend significantly on the nature of the initiator. Observed transesterification reactions also continued in solid poly(L-lactide), and with the most active initiator, almost total equilibration was achieved even at 130 degrees C. This means that all chains including those of the crystallites were involved in transesterification reactions proceeding across the flat surfaces of the crystallites. The more or less equilibrated crystalline polylactides were characterized by DSC and SAXS measurements with regard to their melting temperature (T-m), crystallinity and crystal thickness.

The consecutive photooxidation and reductive amination of various alcohols in a cascade reaction were realized by the combination of a photocatalyst and several enzymes. Whereas the photocatalyst (sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate) mediated the light-driven, aerobic oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols, the enzymes (various -transaminases) catalyzed the enantio-specific reductive amination of the intermediate aldehydes and ketones. The system worked in a one-pot one-step fashion, whereas the productivity was significantly improved by switching to a one-pot two-step procedure. A wide range of aliphatic and aromatic compounds was transformed into the enantiomerically pure corresponding amines via the photo-enzymatic cascade.

Selective oxidation to produce target chemicals usually need activation of O-2 at high temperature and/or pressure, which have largely restricted its practical operation and application. Here, we put forward a radical relay strategy coupling photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation toward efficiently selective conversion of benzyl alcohol (BA) to benzaldehyde (BAD). An illuminated BiVO4 (BVO) photoanode covered with an ultrathin (similar to 3 nm) hydrothermally synthesized layered double hydroxide (U-LDH) catalyst and graphene (G) exhibited >99% selectivity to BAD (1.2 V vs. RHE). Mechanistic studies and DFT calculation verified that the hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) generated from the oxidation of water are bound to the surface of U-LDH through hydrogen-bonding interactions and the energy is lowered. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that BA is adsorbed to the U-LDH catalyst, but BAD is not. Thus, the selectivity is favored not only by the controlled oxidation capacity of center dot OH radicals but the desorption of the desired product from the catalyst before further oxidation occurs. This work introduces an alternative PEC way to achieve mild and selective oxidation of BA derivatives based on ternary G@U-LDH@BVO catalysts.
