Homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of carbonyl groups is a synthetically useful and widely applied organic transformation. Sustainable chemistry goals require replacing conventional noble transition metal catalysts for hydrogenation by earth-abundant base metals. Herein, we report how a practical in situ catalytic system generated by easily available pincer NHC precursors, CoCl2, and a base enabled efficient and high-yielding hydrogenation of a broad range of ketones and aldehydes (over 50 examples and a maximum turnover number [TON] of 2,610). This is the first example of NHC-Co-catalyzed hydrogenation of C=O bonds using flexible pincer NHC ligands consisting of a N-H substructure. Diastereodivergent hydrogenation of substituted cyclohexanone derivatives was also realized by fine-tuning of the steric bulk of pincer NHC ligands. Additionally, a bis(NHCs)-Co complex was successfully isolated and fully characterized, and it exhibits excellent catalytic activity that equals that of the in-situ-formed catalytic system.

Arylchlorides and arylbromides are typically prepared via Friedel-Crafts reaction, using oxidative halogenation or employing halogen transfer agents, such as N-chloro- and N-bromosuccineimide. Herein, we show that K-PHI, a photocatalyst of the carbon nitride family, can easily photooxidize halide anions (Cl- Br- ) in aqueous media to promote oxidative halogenation of electron rich aromatic compounds. The technique is convenient, safe and gives the haloaromatic products with excellent yields from non-harmful starting reagents in the most sustainable fashion. We show that a solution of NaCl, mimicking seawater, can be used as a reagent for photochlorination.

Herein, we have, for the first time, fabricated a few-layered phosphorene (FLP) and few-layered carbon nitride (FLCN) nano-heterostructure as a metal-free and broad solar light-absorbing photocatalyst for highly selective conversion of primary C-H bond of toluene and benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde in the presence of oxygen. The FLP-FLCN photocatalyst can effectively oxidize benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with superior selectivity (>99%) under the visible light irradiation conditions. Moreover, a conversion rate of 82.6 mmol/(g h) from toluene to benzaldehyde is achieved after 24 h of photoreaction. The fine structural analysis including synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near-edge structure and photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemistry signifies that the enhanced photocatalytic activity of FLP-FLCN is mainly contributed from the synergistic electronic coupling at the FLP-FLCN interface. The photogenerated hole-electron pairs and superoxide anion radicals play a crucial role in facilitating the C-H oxidation reaction. In addition, the FLP-FLCN can be reused for at least five cycles to efficiently photocatalytic conversion of benzyl alcohol without obvious loss of photocatalytic activity and microstructures. These findings provide a novel strategy to synthesize a metal-free nanocatalyst for the visible-light-driven photocatalytic conversion of specific organic transformation with high selectivity and superior conversion rate.

Bifunctional catalysts comprised of both noble metal and Bronsted acid sites are of growing interest for many reactions, such as the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of oxygenates produced by the deconstruction of lignocellulosic biomass. One method of preparing a bifunctional metal-acid catalyst is to modify the supporting material of a metal catalyst with acid-containing ligands, such as phosphonic acids (PAs), which provide tunable Bronsted acid sites at the metal-support interface. Here, we explore the potential for PA modification to improve HDO rates on Al2O3, TiO2, CeO2, and SiO2-Al2O3 supports. PAs containing either alkyl or carboxylic acid (CA) tails were used to modify Pt catalysts on each support. PA modification improved HDO rates for the model compound benzyl alcohol when applied to Pt supported by Al2O3, TiO2, and CeO2, but had a negative effect on the HDO rate of Pt/SiO2-Al2O3. Measurements of the relative strength of Bronsted acid sites present on the modified and unmodified catalysts suggested that PAs improved HDO when they provided new or stronger Bronsted acid sites. Additionally, the strength of the Bronsted acid sites provided by PA modifiers were tunable by altering the tail functionality, which affected the rates of HDO. These results suggest that PAs can be used to modify a variety of supports to prepare bifunctional acid-metal catalysts. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this study, convenient and selective oxidation of alcohols using aqueous hydrogen peroxide to yield carbonyl compounds was studied. Using the ruthenium-(4-methylphenyl-2,6-bispydinyl) pyridinedicarboxylate complex [Ru(mpbp)(pydic)] as a catalyst, primary and secondary alcohols were oxidized to aldehydes and ketones at room temperature with a satisfactory yield and excellent selectivity. The influence of various reaction parameters, such as solvent, catalyst and oxidant amount on both the activity and selectivity was also evaluated. Kinetic studies showed that the oxidation of alcohol was first order in terms of the substrate and hydrogen peroxide, and was second order in terms of the catalyst. A plausible mechanism involving ruthenium-oxo species with electrophilic character was proposed based on the in situ UV-vis spectroscopy studies and Hammett plots.

A series of tetra-substituted metal phthalocyanine-multi-walled carbon nanotube composites ([4a (OPh-p-Cl) MPc]-MWCNTs) were fabricated, which were used to effectively catalyze the oxidation of benzyl alcohol. The asprepared composites were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. In order to improve the catalytic activity, the effects of solvent, amount of oxidant, amount of catalyst, temperature and reaction time on catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde were studied. It can be found that the Cu phthalocyanine based composite [4a (OPh-p-Cl)CuPc]-MWCNTs have the best catalytic activity in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol. The conversion rate of benzyl alcohol can reached 70%, the selectivity of benzaldehyde was 87%, and the yield of benzaldehyde can reached to 61%. In addition, a possible mechanism for the enhanced catalytic activity of the optimized [4a (OPh-p-Cl)MPc]-MWCNTs has been discussed.

Turbidity and opaqueness are inherent properties of tissues that limit the capacity to acquire microscopic images through large tissues. Creating a uniform refractive index, known as tissue clearing, overcomes most of these issues. These methods have enabled researchers to image large and complex 3D structures with unprecedented depth and resolution. However, tissue clearing has been adopted to a limited extent due to a combination of cost, time, complexity of existing methods and potential negative impact on fluorescence signal. Here, we describe 2Eci (2nd generation ethyl cinnamate-based clearing), which can be used to clear a wide range of tissues in several species, including human organoids, Drosophila melanogaster, zebrafish, axolotl and Xenopus laevis, in as little as 1-5 days, while preserving a broad range of fluorescent proteins, including GFP, mCherry, Brainbow and Alexa-conjugated fluorophores. Ethyl cinnamate is non-toxic and can easily be used in multi-user microscope facilities. This method opens up tissue clearing to a much broader group of researchers due to its ease of use, the non-toxic nature of ethyl cinnamate and broad applicability.

In this manuscript, we investigated in detail one of the critical parameters that govern the reactivity of the carbonylic group toward hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation: the effect of the side chains of aldehydes. We observed that the presence of a pi-electron conjugation on the side chains strongly affects the conversion of aldehydes to alcohols and hydrocarbons under the reaction conditions studied. In particular, the presence of a strong pi-electron conjugation, such as the aromatic ring, enables the hydrogenation and further hydrodeoxygenation of the carbonylic group, while, on the other hand, molecules with no or weak pi-electron conjugation (such as alkyl chains or single conjugated C = C double bonds) remained inactive. These results were supported by adsorption analyses as well as theoretical models, which showed that differences in adsorption mode and strength between two model substrates (benzaldehyde and octanal) were not the decisive factors in the conversion of the carbonyl group.
