To improve the fractionation efficiency of lignins from Miscanthus x giganteus in the neutral DES (choline chloride/glycerol), three heteropoly acids with environmental origin and economic viability (phosphotungstic, phosphomolybdic, and silicotungstic acids) were utilized as catalysts. It was found that the silicotungstic acid-choline chloride/glycerol system resulted in a high lignin yield of 78.2% under mild conditions (120 degrees C, 3 h). This was attributed to silicotungstic acid acting as tetrahydric acid, which donated more active protons to selectively cleave ether bonds and further facilitated lignin removal. The lose following lignin profiling indicated that the recovered lignin had a high purity (92.7%), low molecular weight (M-w 1520-2470 g/mol), low polydispersity (PDI < 1.7), excellent thermal stability, and good solubility in dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethylacetamide. Additionally, phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) lignin exhibited a typical structure of HGS with a relatively higher O/C ratio due to more nativelike C-O-bonded structures (high beta-aryl ether content) after treatment. Interestingly, nanoscaled lignin was defined in the DES fractionation procedure based on the SEM and TEM analyses. To further evaluate the potential application of the isolated lignin streams, the antioxidant activity was performed by in vitro 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability. The antioxidant performance (IC50 = 0.042 mg/mL) was better than that of the commercial antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (IC50 = 0.056 mg/mL). The above results demonstrated that the heteropoly acids-neutral DES system was significantly efficient for lignin extraction and provided a new source of lignin with good antioxidant activity. Phenols are common precursors and core structures of a variety of industrial chemicals ranging from pharmaceuticals to polymers. However, the synthesis of site-specifically substituted phenols is challenging, and thus the development of new methods for this purpose would be highly desirable. Reported here is a protocol for palladium-catalyzed ortho-selective alkylation reactions of phenols with primary alcohols by a dearomatization-rearomatization strategy, with water as the sole by-product. Various substituted phenols and primary alcohols were compatible with the standard reaction conditions. The detailed mechanism of this transformation was also investigated.

Volatile content during postharvest is a critical factor affecting the quality of rose products. However, changes in the volatile content of cut rose flowers during vase life have not yet been identified although the maturity of flower petals may result in the significant changes of volatile profiles. The present study investigated volatile changes in the petals of two rose varieties, ‘Fuego’ exhibited to longer vase life and ‘Red eagle, during vase life. ‘Fuego’ petals contained 31 volatiles, of which 12 increased and 11 decreased in content during vase life. ‘Red Eagle’ petals contained 37 volatiles, of which 9 increased and 19 decreased. The major components that increased during vase life included 2-ethylhexan-1-ol and phenylmethanol in ‘Fuego’ and hexan-1-ol and 2-phenylacetaldehyde in both cultivars, whereas the major components that decreased during vase life included methyl butanoate in ‘Fuego’, 3,5-dimethoxytoluene in ‘Red Eagle’, and 2-methylhexane in both cultivars. The total volatile content was maintained in ‘Fuego’ petals during the 6-day vase life, despite the changes in the content of individual volatile compound. By contrast, the total volatile content of ‘Red Eagle’ petals significantly decreased during vase life. Additionally, the volatile compounds that increased in content were relatively small molecules (<= C-8), whereas those that decreased in content during vase life were relatively large molecules (>= C-9). These results suggest that the analysis of volatile changes during vase life contribute to the harvest time selection of rose flowers and the determination of petal stages used for essential oil in many rose varieties.

The reactions of 3-benzyl-1,5-ditosyl-1,3,5-triazapentane (1) and 3-benzyl-1,5-dimesityl-1,3,5-triazapentane (2) with one equivalent of Lappert’s germylene or stannylene (M[N(SiMe3)(2)](2), where M = Ge, Sn) produced germylenes and stannylenes of the general formula PhCH2N(CH2CH2NR)(2)M, where M = Ge, R = 4-MeC6H4SO2- (3); 2,4,6-Me3C6H2- (5); M = Sn, R = 4-MeC6H4SO2- (4); 2,4,6-Me3C6H2- (6), in satisfactory yields. According to NMR data (H-1, C-13, Sn-119), stannylenes 4 and 6 are monomeric in solution, and the coordination number of tin is four. The synthesized stannylenes exhibited very high (compound 4) and moderate (compound 6) activity as initiators for bulk polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone, resulting in the synthesis of high-molecular-weight polymers with relatively narrow molecular-weight distribution. Previously unknown triamine 2 was synthesized by benzylation of HN(CH(2)CH(2)NHMes)(2) with benzyl chloride in the presence of K2CO3.

The morphology and crystal-plane effects of CeO2 materials (nanorods, octahedra, cubes, and particles) in gas-phase selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol were investigated. HRTEM, XPS and TPR analyses showed that CeO2 nanorods enclosed by {110} and {100} facets are richer in oxygen vacancies than nanocubes, octahedra and nanoparticles. Their catalytic activity towards the gas-phase selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol, however, followed the order nanorods > nanoparticles nano-octahedra > nanocubes, which was not fully consistent with the content of oxygen vacancies. Further characterization together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the exposed crystal planes can not only determine the content of oxygen vacancies, but also influence the ability to abstract H, adsorb O2 and remove water. The combination of all these factors leads to a collective crystal-plane effect of ceria, and these results can help deepen our understanding of ceria surface chemistry.

This study presents the fire resistance results of incorporating nano-sized alumina in boron nitride reinforced epoxy-based intumescent fire-retardant coating. Structural steel substrates were coated with the developed coating and exposed at 800 degrees C for 2 h for furnace fire test to examine the char expansion and morphology. The fire-resistance of the coating was tested by heating the coated substrates using a Bunsen burner for 1 h. The coated substrates were tested for water absorption followed by a fire-resistance test. The furnace fire test showed that boron nitride-alumina (BNA-1) reinforced with 0.1 wt% of nano-sized alumina resulted in 45% higher char compared to boron nitride-alumina reinforced with 0.4 wt% (BNA-4) and boron nitride-alumina reinforced with 0.5 wt% (BNA-5). The increased amount of alumina improved the mass of the char. The lowest substrate temperature of 137 degrees C was recorded by BNA-5 with a maximum char mass of 43.89 wt%. This was considered due to formation of aluminum oxide and aluminum phosphate on the char surface, reduced char pore size, and increased amount of alumina in the gas emission. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis found boron phosphate, boron nitride, and phosphoric nitride compounds were reliable in protecting the substrate at high temperature. The functional groups of char compounds were observed by FTIR. FESEM micrographs showed the presence of nanosized alumina. XPS results also suggest that nano-alumina may react with boron nitride and ammonium polyphosphate additives, producing aluminium nitride, boron oxide, and aluminium phosphate that are beneficial to the intumescent process and fire-resistant performance. Pyrolysis GC-MS results showed reduced emission of gaseous product in BNA-5. This concluded that the addition of 0.5 wt% alumina in BNA improved char morphology and increased char mass. No changes in the microstructure and hardness of the substrate were observed after the fire test. The fire resistance of the water-immersed samples showed a small increase in substrate temperature which was within the acceptable range for structural safety.

Silene viridifiora (Caryophyllaceae) has adaptogen, tonic, actoprotector and immunomodulator properties that are mainly attributed to ecdysteroids. The aim of the present study is to investigate the chemical constituents of essential oil as well as the 20-hydroxyecdysone content in the methanol extract S. viridiflora and its related biological activity. GC-MS analysis showed the essential oil of S. viridifiora to have a complex composition, which was dominated by methyl palmitate (8.05%), 3-hexen-1-ol (7.54%), 3-hexenyl benzoate (3.86%), beta-myrcene (3.80%), 1,1-diethoxy-2-phenylethane (3.65%), hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (3.20%) and 4-terpineol (2.47%). A high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) method was developed to analyze the methanolic extracts of S. viridifiora and to quantify the main ecdysteroid, 20-hydroxyecdysone. Validation showed that the method was accurate over the entire calibration range and resulted in errors of less than 10% in the 100-815 mu g/ml concentration range. Antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory potentials of methanol extract and individual compounds of S. viridiflora were evaluated. The results could provide a starting point for designing novel phyto-pharmaceuticals.

We report an efficient procedure for the synthesis of pillared MWW zeolites (MCM-36) via integrating intercalation and hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) into one step. Specifically, two specially selected surfactants with more hydrophilicity instead of the conventional swelling agent cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were employed to increase the interlayer wetting ability and water content. The resultant intercalation and hydrolysis of TEOS occur concurrently in a confined interlayer microenvironment with enriched interlayer water and basic hexamethyleneimine (HMI). It is found that the wetting ability of swelling surfactants has a profound effect on pillarization efficiency, resulting in the different degrees of order of the layered structure, pore-size distribution, and accessibility of the acid sites of MCM-36. MCM-36 prepared using a gemini-type surfactant as a swelling agent shows a highly long-range ordered structure and enhanced catalytic activity for alkylation of benzene with benzyl alcohol compared to the one produced using conventional CTAB as a swelling agent.

DK-I-56-1 (7-methoxy-2-(4-methoxy-d(3)-phenyl)-2,5-dihydro-3H-pyrazolo[4,3-c]quinolin-3-one), a recently de-veloped deuterated pyrazoloquinolinone, has been recognized as a lead candidate for treatment of various neuropsychiatric disorders. During preclinical investigation of poorly water-soluble compounds such as DK-I-56-1, the application of nanotechnology could be advantageous due to improved safety and possibly increased bioavailability of nanosized formulation. DK-I-56-1 nanosuspensions stabilized by polysorbate 80, alone or in combination with poloxamers 188 i.e. 407 or D-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate, were prepared using a small-scale media milling device. With particle size 208.7-250.6 nm and polydispersity index <0.250, selected nanodiseprsions were stable for three weeks. Pharmacokinetic and biodistribution studies following intraperitoneal administration of three types of formulation in mice indicated high plasma DK-I-56-1 levels after solution (10,228.6 +/- 1037.2 ngh/ml) and nanosuspension (6770.4 +/- 770.7 ngh/ml) but not suspension ad-ministration (966.0 +/- 58.1 ngh/ml). However, distribution of DK-I-56-1 after solution was heavily influenced by its composition, and brain availability of nanosuspension was superior to that of solution formulation. In spontaneous locomotor activity test, the expected hyperlocomotor effect was observed after nanosuspension administration, without compromising impact of the vehicle/excipients used. Therefore, nanonization of drug compound assembled with proper selection of stabilizers may seemingly contribute further thorough testing of DK-I-56-1 preclinical efficacy. SDS of cas: 100-51-6. Carbon nanotube assemblies with controlled morphology and tailored architecture offer great potentials for myriad applications, but strategies for their production have remained a significant challenge. Here, we proposed a novel and simple microconfined-annealing strategy, in which a Pickering microdroplet patterned method and unique pyrolysis-stimulated-transformation processes were coupled unprecedentedly, for the fabrication of spherical nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube assemblies (NCNTA). Based on this strategy, the as-prepared superstructures not only retained the micrometer-size and well-defined morphology of the initial Pickering droplets, but also derived a hierarchical pomegranate-like structure where numerous interconnected NCNT particles were encapsulated by a carbon crust. More importantly, the interior architectures were shown to be manipulated through controlling synthesized parameters. Owing to the unique structure and composition of these assemblies, the yielded superstructures exhibited excellent performance and good recyclability in heterogeneous catalysis applications. This synthetic strategy provides new routes to access other micro- or macroscopic materials with novel structures and paves the way to expand their potential applications. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
