We demonstrate the selective oxidation of secondary alcohols and activated primary alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes or ketones using Fe-bTAML as the catalyst and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) as the oxidant. Good to excellent yields of 80%-99% for the carbonyl compounds and turnover numbers up to similar to 500 was obtained with this catalytic system. The reactions are clean, performed under mild conditions (air, room temperature) and yielded sodium chloride as the only by-product. The yield and turnover number were dependent on the pH of the reaction and this difference was attributed to the different reactive intermediates that was formed at pH 7 and pH 12 (Fe-V(O) and Fe-IV(O) respectively). Reactions involving the Fe-V(O) intermediate oxidize secondary alcohols more efficiently than its Fe-IV(O) analog. This trend was reversed for the oxidation of activated primary alcohols where reactions involving Fe-IV(O) afforded much higher TON’s. This reactivity trend can be explained from the differences in bond dissociation energy (BDE) of their corresponding one electron reduced species ([Fe-IV-OH], similar to 99 kcal/mol; [Fe-III-OH], similar to 83 kcal/mol) as well as their relative stabilities in the solvent during reaction. This catalytic system was found to be unsuitable for nonconjugated primary alcohol due to the formation of the inactive Fe-IV(OMe) intermediate after one catalytic cycle.

Arma chinensis is a predaceous insect species that can effectively suppress a wide range of agricultural and forest insect pests in the orders Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Hemiptera in Northeast Asia. Adult A. chinensis males produce an aggregation-sex pheromone from dorsal abdominal glands and artificial aggregation-sex pheromone can attract adults of both sexes. The aggregation-sex pheromone consists of (E)-2-hexenal, (E)-2-hexen-1-ol, benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol. Both antennae and proboscises of A. chinensis females and males responded to components from male dorsal abdominal gland extracts. (E)-2-hexenal and benzaldehyde elicited significantly higher EAG responses than those with (E)-2-hexen-1-ol and benzyl alcohol. Benzyl alcohol elicited the weakest EAG responses, although benzyl alcohol was the most abundant of the four major components in male dorsal abdominal gland extracts. A field bioassay using trap catches demonstrated that (E)-2-hexenal and benzyl alcohol were key components of the pheromone for catching conspecific adults. Single pheromone components were the least attractive to A. chinensis in the field.

Four types of core-shell materials with magnetic Fe3O4 microparticles as the core were prepared through different approaches using dopamine, glucose, tetrabutyl orthotitanate (TBOT), and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the shell precursor, respectively. CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) was successfully immobilized onto these supports to fabricate efficient catalysts for the tandem catalytic synthesis of imines from benzyl alcohols and anilines at low temperature under air atmosphere. The as-prepared catalysts were detailedly characterized by TEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR, XPS VSM, ICP, and CO2-TPD. Interestingly, these prepared catalysts showed higher catalytic activity than reported CeO2 catalysts. Most attractively, the catalyst with a shell of nitrogen-doped-carbon derived from dopamine exhibited the best catalytic property, and outstanding stability and recyclability in the cycle experiment. According to the XPS and CO2-TPD characterization, the enhanced performance of Fe3O4@CN@CeO2 composites can be attributed to two reasons as follows: (1) the immobilization of CeO2 improved its alkalinity at low reaction temperature, and alkalinity is beneficial to promote the oxidation of alcohols to benzaldehyde, which is the ratedetermining step for this tandem reaction; (2) the doped nitrogen generated Lewis basic site could satisfactorily stabilize Ce3+/Ce4+ pair of CeO2, which determined the catalytic activity and stability of CeO2 based catalysts for this tandem reaction. Moreover, the prepared catalysts could be facilely recovered from the reaction mixture with an external magnet. A vinylation/devinylation looping system for acetaldehyde manufacturing was evaluated. Vinylation of iso-butanol with calcium carbide under solvent-free conditions was combined with hydrolysis of the resulting iso-butyl vinyl ether under slightly acidic conditions. Acetaldehyde produced by hydrolysis was collected from the reaction mixture by simple distillation, and the remaining alcohol was redirected to the vinylation step. All the inorganic co-reagents can be looped as well, and the full sequence is totally sustainable. A complete acetaldehyde manufacturing cycle was proposed on the basis of the developed procedure. The cycle was fed with calcium carbide and produced the aldehyde as a single product in a total preparative yield of 97 %. No solvents, hydrocarbons, or metal catalysts were needed to maintain the cycle. As calcium carbide in principle can be synthesized from virtually any source of carbon, the developed technology represents an excellent example of biomass and waste conversion into a valuable industrial product.

Treatment of Ln(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O (Ln = La, Ce) with an equimolar amount of 2,2′-diphenylglycine (DpgH) in ethanol afforded the corresponding hexacoordinated complexes (DpgH(+/-))(3)Ln(NO3)(3)center dot H2O (DpgH(+/-) = zwitterionic 2,2′-diphenylglycine, Ln = La (1), Ce (2)). The catalytic behaviour of 1 and 2 in the homo- and copolymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) and rac-lactide (r-LA) has been investigated herein. In the case of epsilon-CL, the two complexes exhibited comparable activity, allowing for complete monomer conversion under aerobic and solvent-free conditions at 150 degrees C in 24 h. With respect to the ROP of r-LA, 1 was found to be completely inactive, while only 8% conversion was achieved in the presence of 2. Liquid oligomers were isolated during epsilon-CL/r-LA copolymerization in the presence of both complexes. This study used dual asymmetric centrifugation (DAC) to produce a topical vehicle for Pirfenidone (Pf; 5-methyl-1-phenyl-2[1H]-pyridone)-a Food and Drug Administration-approved antifibrotic drug indicated for idiopathic fibrosis treatment. Pf was loaded (8 wt%) in a poloxamer nanoemulsion gel (PNG) formulation consisting of water (47.8 wt%), triacetin (27.6 wt%), poloxamer 407 (P407, 13.8 wt%), polysorbate 80 (1.8 wt%), and benzyl alcohol (0.9 wt%). To our knowledge, poloxamer gels are typically processed with either high-shear methods or temperature regulation and have not been emulsified using DAC. Using a single-step emulsification process, 2 min mixed at 2500 RPM resulted in the lowest Pf loading variability with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.96% for a 1.5 g batch size. Batch sizes of 15 g and 100 g yield higher RSD of 4.18% and 3.05%, respectively, but still in compliance with USP guidelines.Ex vivopermeation in full thickness porcine skin after 24 h showed total Pf permeation of 404.90 +/- 67.07 mu g/cm(2). Testedin vitroon human dermal fibroblasts stimulated with transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1), Pf-PNG resulted in a > 2 fold decrease in alpha-SMA expression over vehicle control demonstrating that formulated Pf retained its biological activity. One-month stability testing at 25 degrees C/60% relative humidity (RH) and 40 degrees C/75% RH showed that % drug content, release kinetics, and biological activity were largely unchanged for both conditions; however, pH decreased from 6.7 to 5.5 (25 degrees C/60% RH) and 4.5 (40 degrees C/75% RH) after 1 month. Overall, these data demonstrate the utility of DAC to rapidly and reproducibly prepare lab-scale batches of emulsified gels for pharmaceutical formulation development.

A series of Bi2Sn2O7 photocatalysts was developed with the aim to regulate defect chemistry as well as electronic structure by modulating the charge states of tin species for boosting photocatalytic selective oxidation of alcohols performance. Defective centers, such as oxygen vacancies (OVs), were beneficial to enhancing the adsorption and activation of molecular oxygen. Meanwhile, the valence band edge potential of Bi2Sn2O7 with higher OVs content exhibited a distinct downshift, improving the thermodynamical driving force of photooxidation. Additionally, OVs contributed to promoting the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, which can be confirmed by the surface photovoltage measurement. By optimizing the electronic structure as well as defect chemistry, the optimal benzyl alcohol conversion efficiency was 76.0% with selectivity toward benzaldehyde being about 100%. It’s found that photogenerated holes and O-center dot(2)- active species played critical role in photocatalytic aerobic oxidation. This work may provide a novel insight to clarify the role of defect chemistry during the selective benzyl alcohol oxidation over Bi2Sn2O7 photocatalyst.

The reactions of monomeric C,N-chelated organogermanium(II) hydride L(H)Ge.BH3 with organolithium salts RLi yielded lithium hydrogermanatoborates (Li(THF)(2){BH3[L(H)GeR]})(2). Compound (Li(THF)(2){BH3[L(H)GePh]})(2) was used as a source of LiH for the reduction of organic C=O or C=N bonds in nonpolar solvents accompanied by the elimination of a neutral complex L(Ph)Ge.BH3. The interaction of (Li(THF)(2){BH3[L(H)GePh]})(2) with the polar C=O bond was further investigated by computational studies revealing a plausible geometry of a pre-reactive intermediate. A simple and fast method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 75 plastic food contact material (FCM) in liquid food simulants, at levels of a few ng g-1. The method employs an optimised salt-assisted liquid-liquid extraction for all EU-regulated ethanol/H2O food simulants, in the presence of 10% NaCl (simulants A and C) or 5% NaCl (simulant D1), and dichloromethane as the extracting solvent. Gas chromatography with triple-quad MS operating in multiple reaction monitoring acquisition was used, applying isotope dilution with selected deuterated compounds. Adequate sensitivity was demonstrated for all analytes. The results also showed sufficient accuracy for the majority of substances, with recoveries of 70-120% and repeatability (expressed as relative standard deviations, RSDs) smaller than 15%. The method was applied to the analysis of FCM multilayer items after undergoing migration testing according to the specifications of the current EU legislation in force.
