Three novel heteropolyanion-based Bronsted acidic ionic liquids (BAILs), butane mono sulfoacid-functionalized 1,10-phenanthrolinum, butane mono and bis sulfoacid-functionalized 1,4-dimethylpiperazinium salts of phosphortungstate catalyst (PhBs(1)-PW, [PipBs(1)](3)-PW and [PipBs(2)](3)-(PW)(2)) were synthesized and well characterized with FTIR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, Electro-Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS), Elemental analysis (CHNS), EDX and TG analysis techniques. The esterification reactions of monocarboxylic acids with monohydric alcohols were carried out using these catalysts. The introduced catalysts present a self-separation performance after reaction, which can be easily recovered and quite steadily reused as confirmed by six-run recycling test. Moreover, bis sulfoacidfunctionalized 1,4-dimethylpiperazinium salt of phosphortungstate showed the best catalytic performance among the prepared catalysts for the esterification reaction. This investigation mainly focuses on the characteristic study on combustion, performance and emission of gasoline blended with lower order alcohol, i.e. ethanol and higher order alcohol, i.e. benzyl alcohol in the ratio of 10% and 20% by volume of the overall quantity. These two alcohols were blended with gasoline and investigated solely to find the comparison between higher and lower order alcohols and thus to identify the optimum blend based on the performance and emission characteristics. The blends were tested in a commercial two-cylinder 624 cc gasoline engine with multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) system and data acquisition capability. The fuel blends were tested at different loads ranging from 20% to 100% with a step size of 20% in ascending sequence. At full load, higher alcohol blend showed an improvement in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of 32.8% and 33.2% for Bn10 and Bn20, when compared to neat gasoline 29.77% and BTE of lower alcohol registered a slight improvement in comparison to gasoline, i.e. 30.41% and 31.1% for E10 and E20 respectively. HC emissions were reduced to 70 ppm and 57 ppm for lower and higher alcohol blends respectively, which is lower compared to 88 ppm for gasoline. CO and CO2 emissions were reduced with both lower and higher alcohol blends in comparison with neat gasoline. NOx emissions show a reduction nature with alcohol blends when compared to neat gasoline at all the load conditions. It is perceived that based on the performance, emission and combustion characteristics, higher alcohol namely benzyl alcohol blend with gasoline is optimum.

Net selective bromination and chlorination of activated C-H bonds can be effected in generally high yield via a simple perhalogenation/dehalogenation sequence. The photochemical reductions require no photocatalyst, relying instead on the formation of an electron donor-acceptor complex of the substrate and reductant, or alternatively autophotocatalysis. Some reactions proceed despite any apparent photon absorption, serving as a cautionary tale for other photochemical reactions involving amines. Mechanistic experiments provide an explanation for this observation.

A series of unsymmetrical 1,3-disubstituted benzimidazolium chlorides were synthesized as N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors. These compounds were used for synthesis of the new ruthenium(II) complexes of the type [RuCl2(arene)(NHC)], (arene = eta(6)-p-cymene). The structures of all compounds were characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy techniques. The catalytic activity of the ruthenium complexes has been evaluated with respect to the mono-N-alkylation reactions of aromatic amines with various alcohol derivatives under solvent-free conditions at 120 degrees C using the borrowing hydrogen strategy.

The recent growing concern driven by consumer interest in the safety and quality of seafood, has boosted the search for healthy and functional aquafeeds. The current study represents the first approach to assess the potential of volatile composition of the wine industry by products (e.g., grape pomace, grape stems, lees), as additives for improving the quality of fish feeds in terms of organoleptic characteristics (e.g., aroma and flavor) and health benefits. Headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) was used to establish the volatile profile of wine industry by-products. A total of 153 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which belong to different chemical families, comprising 36 esters, 31 carbonyl compound, 20 alcohols, 18 terpenoids, 17 acids, 11 furanic compounds, four volatile phenols, two lactones, and 14 miscellaneous, were identified. Esters and terpenoids showed a positive contribution to the aquafeeds aroma with fruity, sweet, green, fresh, and berry notes, whereas some acids (e.g., hexanoic acid) and terpenoids (e.g., limonene) could be used as antimicrobial, antioxidant and antiproliferative agents. Our findings confirmed the potential of wine industry by-products as a rich source of essential compounds to enhance the quality of aquafeeds towards the valorization of winery waste based on the concept of circular economy. Further investigation on the extraction, isolation and purification of VOCs from a natural bio-source will guarantee the safety of the aquafeed and compliance with the requirements of the animal feed industry.

To explore the application potential of dual prodrug strategies in the development of anti-HCV agents, a variety of sofosbuvir derivatives with modifications at the C4 or N3 position of the uracil moiety were designed and synthesized. Some compounds exhibited potent anti-HCV activities, such as 4e and 8a-8c with similar EC50 values (0.20-0.22 mu M) comparative to that of sofosbuvir (EC50= 0.18 mu M) in a genotype 1b based replicon Huh7 cell line. Moreover, 8b displayed a good human plasma stability profile, and was easily metabolized in human liver microsomes expectantly. On the other hand, aiming to discover novel anti-HCV nucleosides, pyrazin-2(1H)-one nucleosides and their phosphoramidate prodrugs were investigated. Several active compounds were discovered, such as 25e (EC50= 7.3 mu M) and S-29b (EC50= 19.5 mu M). This kind of nucleosides were interesting and would open a new avenue for the development of antiviral agents.

The selective oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes by O-2 instead of stoichiometric oxidants (for example, Mn-VII, Cr-VI, and Os-IV) is an important but challenging process. Most heterogeneous catalytic systems (thermal and photocatalysis) require noble metals or harsh reaction conditions. Here we show that the Bi24O31Br10(OH) photocatalyst is very efficient in the selective oxidation of a series of aliphatic (carbon chain from C-1 to C-10) and aromatic alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes/ketones under visible-light irradiation in air at room temperature, which would be challenging for conventional thermal and light-driven processes. High quantum efficiencies (71% and 55% under 410 and 450nm irradiation) are reached in a representative reaction, the oxidation of isopropanol. We propose that the outstanding performance of the Bi24O31Br10(OH) photocatalyst is associated with basic surface sites and active lattice oxygen that boost the dehydrogenation step in the photo-oxidation of alcohols.

The effect of bio-imprinting and water activity on catalytic activities and the thermostability of lipases was investigated for transesterification using vinyl acetate and benzyl alcohol as substrates in ionic liquid, [C(n)mim][PF6] (n=4,6,8), and benzene. The catalytic activities were enhanced by imprinting in benzene and [C(4)mim][PF6], and the relations between the transesterification activities and the water activity in both solvents were approximately bell shaped. The reactivity of the transesterification in benzene was higher than that in [C(4)mim][PF6]. The effects of water activity and imprinting on the kinetic parameters in [C(4)mim][PF6] were examined. Without controlling the water content, the values of K-m,K-VA and K-m,K-BA (Michaelis constants of vinyl acetate and benzyl alcohol, respectively) decreased, and the values of V-m (maximum rate) increased by imprinting. On the other hand, by controlling the water content in the organic media, the values of V-m, K-m,K-VA, and K-m,K-BA increased by imprinting. The activities of lipase in ionic liquid are more strongly affected by water activity and imprinting than those in benzene. We observed effects of water activity on thermostability but none from imprinting.
