Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is used to obtain a wide range of materials for various purposes. High demand of PVC is explained by possibility to modify polyvinyl chloride and produce broad range of materials with improved properties as well as to have cost efficient ratio: productivity, available raw materials, saving of natural resources. However, under normal temperature polyvinyl chloride is brittle and inelastic, that limits the fields of PVC application. The production of basic PVC compositions is impossible without plasticizers – low-molecular compounds that allow direct regulating physical and mechanical properties of polymer. Production of plasticizers became one of the most important branch of petrochemical industry. Recently, however, the range and production of plasticizers have drastically decreased due to the increased cost, which reduced the competitiveness of plasticized PVC products. Therefore, the expansion of plasticizer variety for PVC is a strategic task of great practical significance. The present work describes synthesis methods of esters on the basis of oxyalkylated alcohols suggested as polyvinyl chloride plasticizers. Physico-chemical properties of synthesized compounds were studied. Conditions for their production with maximum outcome were selected. The results of experiments in which obtained compounds were tested as additives in the plasticization of PVC showed that the obtained samples of cable plastic, adhesive PVC tapes and multi-layered polyvinyl chloride linoleum satisfy all the technical requirements by the main indicators: cable plastic compound – GOST 5960-72 with amendment 1-9; a PVC adhesive tape – Technical Conditions – 2245-001-00203312-2003; multilayered linoleum – GOST 7251-77. According to the experimental results, phthalates of oxyalkylated alcohols possess rather high efficiency as plasticizers of polyvinyl chloride and are recommended for use in the above-mentioned industrial PVC recipes.

Microdroplet chemistry is attracting increasing attention for accelerated reactions at the solution-air interface. We report herein a voltage-controlled interfacial microreactor that enables acceleration of electrochemical reactions which are not observed in bulk or conventional electrochemical cells. The microreactor is formed at the interface of the Taylor cone in an electrospray emitter with a large orifice, thus allowing continuous contact of the electrode and the reactants at/near the interface. As a proof-of-concept, electrooxidative C-H/N-H coupling and electrooxidation of benzyl alcohol were shown to be accelerated by more than an order of magnitude as compared to the corresponding bulk reactions. The new electrochemical microreactor has unique features that allow i) voltage-controlled acceleration of electrochemical reactions by voltage-dependent formation of the interfacial microreactor; ii) reversible electrochemical derivatization; and iii) in situ mechanistic study and capture of key radical intermediates when coupled with mass spectrometry.

Lugana and Verdicchio are two Italian white wines with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) label. These two wine types are produced in different regions using the same grape variety. The aim of this work is to investigate the existence of volatile chemical markers that could help to elucidate differences between Lugana and Verdicchio wines both at chemical and sensory levels. Thirteen commercial wine samples were analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and 76 volatile compounds were identified and quantified. Verdicchio and Lugana had been differentiated on the basis of 19 free and glycosidically bound compounds belonging to the chemical classes of terpenes, benzenoids, higher alcohols, C-6 alcohols and norisoprenoids. Samples were assessed by means of a sorting task sensory analysis, resulting in two clusters formed. These results suggested the existence of 2 product types with specific sensory spaces that can be related, to a good extend, to Verdicchio and Lugana wines. Cluster 1 was composed of six wines, 4 of which were Lugana, while Cluster 2 was formed of 7 wines, 5 of which were Verdicchio. The first cluster was described as fruity, and fresh/minty, while the second as fermentative and spicy. An attempt was made to relate analytical and sensory data, the results showed that damascenone and the sum of 3 of esters the ethyl hexanoate, ethyl octanoate and isoamyl acetate, was characterizing Cluster 1. These results highlighted the primary importance of geographical origin to the volatile composition and perceived aroma of Lugana and Verdicchio wines.

Enzyme catalysts always show an excellent catalytic selectivity, which is important in biochemistry, especially in catalytic synthesis and biopharming. This selectivity is achieved by combining the binding effect induced by the electrostatic effect of the enzyme to attract a specific substrate and then the prearrangement of the substrates inside the enzyme pocket. Herein, we report a proof-of-concept application of an interfacial electrostatic field induced by constructing Schottky heterojunctions to mimic the electrostatic catalysis of an enzyme. In combination with the 3 D structure, a transition metal/carbon dyad was designed by nanoconfinement methods to promote the differential binding effect and the space-induced organization of the reaction intermediate (vanillyl alcohol) to develop a new one-step hydrogenolysis of vanillin for the production of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol with a remarkably high selectivity (>99 %).

This paper investigates the ability of waste apricot (Prunus armeniaca) kernel shells (AKS) bio-char prepared by single-step carbonization process at 850 degrees C (residence time of 1 h) for possible removal of toxic elements and organic micro-pollutants. The experiment that was performed as well as parameters used proved to be optimal for bio-char production as adsorbing medium, where last issue is validated by multiform material characterization techniques. It has been shown that the produced bio-char possess highly-porous morphology features, with large specific surface area (328.570 m(2) g(-1)). The obtained product was characterized by various pore sizes (including super-micropores and mesopores with maximum pore size of 2.24 nm) structures. Preliminary results are indicated that obtained bio-char can shows increased affinity to possible adsorption of the small organic molecule contaminants upgraded by its physico-chemical properties. Cost estimation of AKS bio-char production substantiated its cost effectiveness and its good physical and chemical properties for future design in batch adsorption and regeneration tests. It was established that AKS produced bio-char was 2.5 times cheaper than the commercially available activated carbon. Bio-char exhibits promising removal performances for potential adsorption of heavy metal and organic micro-pollutants from wastewaters systems, as indicated by material textures and spectroscopy measurements. In this work, a low temperature plasma reduction technology is developed for the preparation of AuPd alloy nanocatalyst. The HAuCl4 and PdCl2 mixture as catalyst precursor was directly decomposed on MgO support by plasma to form AuPd nanoalloy. Results demonstrated that the final particles states of nanoalloys prepared by this technique including size, morphology, and chemical valence are highly dependent on temperature of plasma treatment. The catalytic performance of AuPd/MgO in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohols can be tailored by optimizing the synthesis parameter. A relative low temperature in plasma process prevents particles migration and helps to maintain the small size that favors high activity. The AuPd nanoparticles with diameter about 3.5 nm by optimizing the plasma treatment condition exhibit superior conversion and TOF compared to catalyst prepared by the traditional high temperature H2 reduction method. It is believed that the low temperature plasma technology has a unique advantage for the preparation of high-quality alloy nanocatalyst and could be extended for fabricating the other alloy nanocatalysts.

A core-shell structure Au-based catalysts mSiO(2)/Au/Co3O4-HS were successfully derived from in-situ growth ZIF-67 hollow spheres, which were synthesized by a one-step soft template method. The samples were characterized by SEM, TEM, EDX, XPS, XRD and BET to confirm its successful preparation and structural features. The catalytic performance of the catalysts were evaluated by liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with O-2 as the oxidant under alkaline conditions. The experimental results illustrated that reaction conditions, including effect of catalyst amount, oxygen flow rate, reaction temperature and reaction time, were optimized to be 40 mg, 50 ml/min, 140 degrees C and 5 h, respectively. Meanwhile, 55% conversion of benzyl alcohol and 84% selectivitiy to benzaldehyde together with the excellent reusability and stability were achieved under optimal reaction conditions, which was attributed to the core-shell structure leading to the encapsulation of Au NPs and provision of multiple active reaction interface. Based on the intermediates formed from the de-protonation of substrate, a plausible oxidation reaction mechanism with mSiO(2)/Au/Co3O4 -HS catalysts was tentatively proposed to study the relationship between structure and catalytic performance. Iris species can adopt different pollination strategies to attract their pollinators, generalized shelter-mimicking, specialized deceptive sexual-mimicking or food-rewarding. As attractive stimuli, Iris flowers may use their colours, large-size, symmetry, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, relatively few studies investigated Iris floral olfactory cues in the context of plant-visitor/pollinator interactions. In the present study we combined the identification of the floral volatiles of the nectariferous I. planifolia with insects visiting its flowers to gather data on its biology. Floral volatiles were collected in the natural environment by dynamic headspace and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Insect visitors/pollinators were also recorded. The volatile bouquet was aromatic-dominated with 1,4 dimethoxybenzene as major compound. Among the insects visiting its flowers, bumble and honey bees were the most abundant followed by hover flies. Overall, our results suggest that I. planifolia advertises its food reward by an aromatic dominated volatile composition.

Cu2O nanoparticles supported on hydrogen trititanate nanotubes (Cu2O/HTNT) catalysts have been efficiently catalyzed the multicomponent synthesis of 1,2,3-triazoles in water at room temperature from different azide precursors, for example organic halides, sulfonates and anilines. The catalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal & wet-impregnation methods and was characterized by HR-TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, N-2-adsorption desorption and ICP-MS analysis. The catalyst could be recycled by centrifugation and reused up to seven cycles. The 1-benzyl-4-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole (25) structure was proven by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies.
