Commercially available [(PPh3)(2)NiCl2] was found to be an efficient catalyst for the mono-N-alkylation of (hetero)aromatic amines, employing alcohols to deliver diverse secondary amines, including the drug intermediates chloropyramine (5b) and mepyramine (5c), in excellent yields (up to 97%) via the borrowing hydrogen strategy. This method shows a superior activity (TON up to 10000) with a broad substrate scope at a low catalyst loading of 1 mol % and a short reaction time. Further, this strategy is also successful in accessing various quinoline derivatives following the acceptorless dehydrogenation pathway.

Lignin supported palladium(0) nanoparticles (lignin@Pd-NPs) was synthesized in water by reduction of Pd(II) salt successfully. The influence of the various parameters on the particle size of Pd nanoparticles was studied. This lignin supported Pd-NPs were characterized by UV-Vis., PXRD, SEM, TEM and EDX. The lignin@Pd-NPs is heterogeneous catalyst has been used in the transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds into alcohols. Short reaction times with good to excellent yields (85-95%) of the desired products represent the effectiveness of this catalyst for these reactions. The catalyst was easily separable by simple filtration and reusable several times in repeating cycles without considerable loss in its activity. The lignin@Pd-NPs unveiled a superior hydrogenation catalyst for carbonyl compounds. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cu-Catalysed reversible-deactivation radical polymerisation of hydrophobic methacrylate monomers in anhydrous alcohols has been expanded to explore the scope of this unusual choice of solvent. A range of linear methacrylic homopolymers with well-targeted molecular weight and low dispersity (D = 1.12-1.53) have been generated in anhydrous methanol and isopropanol with relative ease. These solvents are normally considered antisolvents and employed to precipitate such polymers; therefore, our studies have assessed the polymerisation reaction mixture homogeneity and extent of reaction control. Statistical copolymerisations with the bi-functional monomer, ethylene glycol di-methacrlylate (EGDMA), has led to branched statistical copolymers with weight average molecular weights up to M-w = 1.76 x 10(6) g mol(-1); subsequent triple-detection size exclusion chromatography studies have provided insight into the impact of monomer structure on the extent of branching within the final isolated polymers. The ability to control branched copolymer molecular weights under these conditions through variation of EGDMA concentrations was seen to be highly dependent on methacrylate monomer chemistry. A number of factors which are likely to effect branching reactions during the polymerisation of hydrophobic methacrylates in anhydrous alcohols are discussed.

Surface and interface engineering predominantly determines the overall surface dynamics, and the surface layers can benefit substantially from a chemically different underneath layer. Herein, we demonstrate the surface tuning of nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) with awaruite (Ni3Fe). The NiFe2O4 grows in the form of a crystalline monolayer encompassing bimetallic Ni3Fe nanocrystals embedded within a polyaniline (PANI) matrix. This is achieved by a simple and highly reproducible chemical approach. Benzyl alcohol (BA) and PANI steer the growth of metallic Ni3Fe covered with a monolayer of NiFe2O4 under mild solvothermal conditions. PANI presumably renders anchoring sites and guides the formation of fine and monodisperse nanocrystals of NiFe2O4/Ni3Fe, while BA acts as a reducing agent and controls the nucleation and the growth of NiFe2O4. In the absence of PANI, the formation of large and agglomerated NiFe2O4 nanoparticles is observed. The fine interface created between the NiFe2O4 monolayer and Ni3Fe imparts unique and superior surface attributes; Ni3Fe renders a high electroactive surface area and faster charge transport, while the NiFe2O4 monolayer affords high catalytic ability. As a result, the NiFe2O4/Ni3Fe/PANI electrode efficiently catalyzes the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and requires a substantially lower overpotential than those of NiO/PANI, NiFe2O4, and Fe2O3/PANI. The Tafel values suggest that the kinetics of the half-reaction at the catalytic interface of NiFe2O4/Ni3Fe/PANI is much faster (52.3 mV dec(-1)) than that of NiO/PANI (82.5 mV dec(-1)), NiFe2O4 (86.0 mV dec(-1)) and Fe2O3/PANI (108.3 mV dec(-1)). The turnover frequency of NiFe2O4/Ni3Fe/PANI is 0.27 s(-1), 5.4 fold higher than that of NiFe2O4 (0.05 s(-1)). Moreover, the electrochemically active surface area, electrochemical impedance, surface charge transport properties, and active sites of NiFe2O4/Ni3Fe/PANI and NiFe2O4 are estimated, compared and correlated to the OER performance. In addition, density functional theory calculations show a decrease in the barrier of the potential-determining step from *O to *OOH, indicating a favorable electronic modulation at the interface of NiFe2O4 and Ni3Fe, which reduces the overpotential requirement.

Photocatalytic oxidation of alcohols with high selectivity is a promising approach for the synthesis of organic compounds under mild conditions and for solar energy conversion. In this work, we report on the highly selective anaerobic photooxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds with coupled H-2 production over Pt-loaded Fe-doped SrTiO3 under visible light. Representatively, an optimized apparent quantum efficiency of 13.2 % at 420 nm was obtained for benzyl alcohol oxidation. X-ray absorption fine structure and in situ diffuse reflectance IR spectroscopy revealed that the surface oxygen vacancies and the fine-tuned valence band edge position induced by Fe doping not only contributed to the activation of alpha-C-H bonds in alcohols, but also avoided the over-oxidation of the obtained carbonyl compounds.

Benzyl alcohol (BnOH) is a natural colorless liquid organic compound that plays an important role in bacteriostatic and anesthetic processes. It is also used to relieve the nerve and ganglionic pain. In this study, we assessed the effect of topical application of BnOH on the Achilles tendon healing process. Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to an experimentally induced wound in the tendon area and then randomized into four groups. Normal saline (0.5 mL) was applied to rats in control group, and BnOH at the concentrations of 0.5 mL 0.075%, 0.15%, 0.3% were applied to the BnOH treatment groups, respectively. Wound treatment with BnOH led to significantly faster functional recovery than with saline. Moreover, treatment of wounds with 0.3% BnOH accelerated the healing process faster than with 0.075% and 0.15% BnOH. Histological analysis of healed wounds that had been treated with BnOH showed more collagen and blood capillaries and fewer inflammatory cells compared to the control. To study the mechanism of the process, the expression of mRNA of TGF-beta 1, Smad2/3 and Smad7 and protein of TGF-beta 1, p-Smad2/3 and Smad7 were quantified by real-time PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Results of this study showed that wounds treated with BnOH significantly enhanced the expression of TGF-beta 1 and Smad2/3 and reduced the expression of Smad7. In general, the current study demonstrated that BnOH improved the recovery process of tendon healing through the promotion of collagen with angiogenesis and showed that TGF-beta plays a role in BnOH treatment of tendon healing. The cleavage of C-O linkages in aryl ethers in biomass-derived lignin compounds without hydrogenation of the aromatic rings is a major challenge for the production of sustainable mono-aromatics. Conventional strategies over the heterogeneous metal catalysts require the addition of homogeneous base additives causing environmental problems. Herein, we propose a heterogeneous Ru/C catalyst modified by Br atoms for the selective direct cleavage of C-O bonds in diphenyl ether without hydrogenation of aromatic rings reaching the yield of benzene and phenol as high as 90.3 % and increased selectivity to mono-aromatics (97.3 vs. 46.2 % for initial Ru) during depolymerization of lignin. Characterization of the catalyst indicates selective poisoning by Br of terrace sites over Ru nanoparticles, which are active in the hydrogenation of aromatic rings, while the defect sites on the edges and corners remain available and provide higher intrinsic activity in the C-O bond cleavage.

A recent experiment has revealed that additive free ester hydrogenation by Co-pincer complexes might follow an unusual non-bifunctional mechanism, however, the detailed mechanistic pathway is missing. It has been predicted that several intermediates and transition states are involved, having their essential role in the catalytic performances. Detailed theoretical studies are therefore essential in this regard for achieving more efficient ester hydrogenation catalysts. On the basis of first principles calculations, performed over Co(PNP)/(PNN) complexes, we present here the energetics and mechanistic details, showing the distinct orientations of different possible intermediates and transition states, and find the minimum energy pathway for the conversion of esters to alcohols. In the way, we find that some intermediates must undergo structural distortion for achieving the lowest potential energy barrier which must have a severe impact on the catalytic turnover frequency.

This study evaluated the effects of freezing, prior to and after dry aging, on the microbiological and physical-chemical quality of beef. Strip loins (n = 24) from 12 carcasses were assigned to four treatments: non-frozen dry aging (Dry); dry aging, steak fabrication, freezing and slow thawing (Dry + ST); freezing, fast thawing (FT; 20 degrees C/15 h) and dry aging (FT + Dry); freezing, slow thawing (ST; 4 degrees C/48 h) and dry aging (ST + Dry). Freezing conditions were – 20 degrees C/28 days and dry aging conditions were 2 degrees C/70% relative humidity, for 28 days.
