A total synthesis of an anticancer xanthone natural product termicalcicolanone A utilizing multiple nucleophilic aromatic substitutions and pericyclic reactions has been developed. The pyrano[3,2-b]xanthen-6-one scaffold was constructed via NHC-catalyzed aroylation to produce the benzophenone intermediate, Claisen cyclization to form the pyran ring, and intramolecular 1,4-addition to construct the xanthone framework. The prenyl group was introduced in the final stages of the synthesis through regioselective Claisen rearrangement. The synthesis has been achieved in 19 steps.

The effects of indigenous fermentation on volatile compound profiles in a Theobroma cacao L, TSH565 clone, resistant to Moniliophtora perniciosa and Phytophthora spp. were evaluated in Southern Brazil. Sixty-three volatile flavor compounds in pulp and 36 in grains were identified by SPME-HS/GC-MS and classified as terpenes, alcohols, esters, ketones and aldehydes, among others. The relative amount of these compounds and their evolution until the end of the fermentation process were assessed in both fresh and fermented grains/pulp masses. -myrcene and -cis-ocimene, among terpenes, were detected in high amounts and are associated to a fine chocolate aroma. The sensory evaluation of chocolates manufactured from the fermented cocoa was performed by trained panelists, which defined 15 sensory descriptors. Chocolates from the TSH565 cultivar were characterized by a rich, fruity, intense cocoa flavor and bitterness, which are valuable sensorial and commercial attributes.

Elicitors play a key role against pathogen infestation, becoming as an alternative to chemical pesticides by the improving secondary metabolites synthesis. Their effect on grape volatile compounds has been little investigated. This field trial aimed to study the foliar application of methyl jasmonate (MeJ), chitosan (CHT), and a yeast extract (YE) on grape volatile compounds by HS-SPME-GC-MS. The results showed that, in general, foliar elicitor application decreased the synthesis of grape volatile compounds. Depending of the treatment, MeJ and CHT showed the lowest total amounts of terpenoids, C-13 norisoprenoids, benzenoids, and esters, together with the highest levels of C6 compounds. YE treatment applied to the grapevines barely affected the synthesis of volatile compounds in grapes. The importance of this work is to add information about the effects of elicitors on grape volatile composition in Tempranillo grapevines.

1,2,3-Trisubstituted donor-acceptor cyclopropenes (DACPs) generated in situ from enoldiazo compounds react with nucleophiles to form alpha-substituted succinic acid derivatives in high yields. Initial dirhodium(II) carboxylate catalysis rapidly converts enoldiazo-acetates or -acetamides to DACPs that undergo catalyst-free Favorskii ring opening with amines, and also with anilines, alcohols, and thiols, when facilitated by catalytic amounts of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP). This methodology provides easy access to mixed esters and amides of monosubstituted succinic acids, including derivatives of naturally occurring compounds. It also affords dihydrazide, dihydroxamic acid, and diamide derivatives, as well as alpha-substituted tetrahydropyridazine-3,6-diones in high yields. Attempts to generate optically enriched DACPs were not successful because their populations having the R and S configurations formed with a chiral dirhodium catalyst are quite similar, and the loss of enantiocontrol likely originates from the DACP ring forming step which is reversible with its intermediate metal carbene.

The floral scents of three forms of cultivated Plumeria rubra L. were evaluated through mass flowering phenology using the dynamic headspace adsorption method and were identified with coupled gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The forms P. rubra f. acutifolia and P. rubra f. lutea had white and yellow flower petals, respectively, and the flower petals of P. rubra f. rubra were red. Although 68 components of the flower scents of the three forms were recorded in different proportions, only 14 chemical compounds were identified with statistically significance. The main volatile compounds in the red form of P. rubra L. were fatty acid derivatives (56.75%). The main compounds in the white and yellow forms of P. rubra L. were benzenoid and terpene, with proportions of 48.38% and 33.33% in P. rubra f. acutifolia and proportions of 42.30% and 47.43% in P. rubra f. lutea, respectively. These differences in the flower scents might be one result of the minor genetic differences between these forms, similar to the role of genetic differences in the flower color combinations of the three forms. We conclude that petal color traits can, to some extent, reflect differences in floral scent compositions and that minor genetic differences of different plant forms exert impacts not only on flower color but also on the phytochemistry of floral scents.

A mesoporous Mn1Zr0.5Oy solid solution is prepared with a template-free co-precipitation method and is used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for oxidative coupling of benzyl alcohol and aniline in the absence of base under mild conditions. XRD, XPS, N-2 physisorption, H-2-TPR, O-2-TPD, NH3-TPD and CO2-TPD were used to study the influence of calcination temperature on the structure, redox properties, acidity-basicity, as well as the catalytic behaviors of the Mn1Zr0.5Oy catalyst. The results show that the optimal catalyst calcined at 400 degrees C displays the highest specific surface area (228 m(2) g(-1)), highest fraction of unsaturated Mn3+ ions (45.4 %) and reactive O-surf. species (52.5 %), and the highest acidity (1.06 mmol g(-1)) and basicity (0.48 mmol g(-1)). Thereby, an enhanced benzylideneaniline formation (5.50 mmol g(cat)(-1) h(-1)) based on a 99 % yield is obtained at 80 degrees C under air atmosphere. This is one of the top results ever reported for all the Mn-based catalysts. The structure-activity relation is finally discussed.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) prepared by chemical vapor deposition was combined with different amounts of carbon nanofibers (CNF) to obtain hybrid materials, which were thoroughly characterized using several techniques. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated towards the photocatalytic synthesis of vanillin (VAD) starting from vanillyl alcohol (VA). The incorporation of the carbon phase in ZnO (from 5% to 20% wt.) was found to increase the surface area and the photocatalytic performance of the materials. The latter was attributed to the efficient separation of charge carriers generated on the optical semiconductor. With the best performing material, the one containing 10% of CNF, the selectivity of the synthesis towards vanillin generation was increased by a factor of 2.5 compared to previous studies, with the additional advantage of carrying the reaction in aqueous medium. The same photocatalyst was successfully applied to the selective synthesis of other aromatic aldehydes, namely anisaldehyde, piperonal, and benzaldehyde. A relationship between the efficiency of the photocatalytic oxidation of the alcohols and the activating nature of their aromatic ring substituents was proposed.

The reactivity and the reaction conditions of the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) and L-lactide (LA) initiated by aluminum ketiminate complexes have been shown differently. Herein, we account for the observation by studying the mechanisms on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculations show that the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-CL and LA are rate-determined by the benzoxide insertion and the C-O bond cleavage step, respectively. Theoretical computations suggest that the reaction temperature of L-LA polymerization should be higher than that of epsilon-CL one, in agreement with the experimental data. To provide a reasonable interpretation of the experimental results and to give an insight into the catalyst design, the influence of the electronic, steric, and thermal effects on the polymerization behaviors will be also discussed in this study.

The preparation of metal nanocomposite catalysts with MOFs as precursors has attracted extensive attention, as the design and preparation of catalysts by this method could maximize the advantages of the precursors and ensure the stability of the catalysts as much as possible. Here, a benzimidazole-modified Cu/Co bimetal-MOF as a precursor was used to synthesize a Cu-nanowire@Quasi-MOF material via a simple and low-cost thermal decomposition strategy for the first time. Experimental evaluation suggested that the Co-MOF part in Cu/Co bimetal-MOF was a morphology retainer, and the special channel composition of the Quasi-MOF played a space-confined role in the formation of the unique Cu-nanowires. Based on the detailed investigation, a possible formation mechanism was proposed. Furthermore, Cu-nanowire@Quasi-MOF exhibited excellent catalytic performance and good stability in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol in air. This study demonstrated that using MOFs as a precursor, by adjusting the calcination temperature and adding heteroatoms, can control the morphology of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in MOF derivatives, reduce agglomeration and enhance catalytic activity, which will be a promising approach to in situ preparation of complex metal nanocomposites.
