A convenient, safe, and effective synthetic protocol for the synthesis of chiral beta-homoglutamic acid was described. The strategy started from 3-cyclohexenecarboxylic acid, followed by three steps classic reaction including Curtius Rearrangement, oxidative cleavage of alkene, and debenzylation by catalytic hydrogenation. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in either unmodified, hydroxylated (MWCNT-OH), carboxylated (MWCNT-COOH) or sulfonated (MWCNT-SO3H) forms were incorporated into the running electrolytes in capillary electrophoresis (CE) to play the role of pseudo-stationary phases (PSPs) and perform nanoparticle electrokinetic capillary chromatography (NPEKC). MWCNT-COOH and MWCNT-SO3H were derived from MWCNTs via their treatment with concentrated strong acids. These functionalized MWCNTs were characterized by Raman and FTIR spectroscopies to demonstrate their covalent functionalization. The study of MWCNT-SO3H and MWCNT-OH as PSPs were introduced in this research report for the first time in NPEKC. The results obtained with functionalized MWCNTs were compared to those obtained using unmodified MWCNTs for better understanding the electrophoretic behavior of these functionalized MWCNTs. While only MWCNT-COOH allowed the separation of some nucleic acid bases and nucleosides, neutral solutes such as alkylbenzenes (ABs), phenyl alkyl alcohols (PAAs) and aniline derivatives in neutral forms (i.e., at basic pH) were not resolved in the presence of neither MWCNT-COOH nor MWCNT-SO3H in the running electrolytes, indicating that these functionalized MWCNTs do not have enough surface charge density to function as effective PSPs in NPEKC. This necessitated the coating of the functionalized MWCNTs under investigation with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to bring about the separation of neutral solutes by NPEKC. The SDS coated MWCNTs whether unmodified or functionalized were characterized with two homologous series namely ABs and PAAs in order to evaluate their relative retention energetics under the same electrolyte composition. The results showed that the systems pairs SDS-MWCNT-COOH/SDS-MWCNTs and SDS-MWCNT-OH/SDS-MWCNTs were homoenergetics (i.e., same energetics) while the system pair SDS-MWCNT-SO3H/SDS-MWCNTs was homeoenergetics (i.e., similar energetics). On the other hand, all the systems pairs SDS coated MWCNTs/SDS were homeoenergetics. Homoenergetics means that the solute retention has an identical physico-chemical basis and the differences observed in the magnitude of solute retention on the various PSPs are attributed to differences in the nonpolar phase ratios of the PSPs under otherwise the same electrolyte composition. Conversely, homeoenergetics signifies that the solute retention has a similar physico-chemical basis in the PSPs systems under investigation, which also differ in their phase ratios.

Selective hydrogenation of organic functionalities at environmentally benign conditions using visible light is of great industrial and economic significance. Herein we report visible-light-induced rapid, almost quantitative and selective hydrogenation of olefins to respective mono-reduced products using cooperative performance of Pd(0) nanoparticles (NPs) and Pd(II) ions evenly distributed on a newly synthesized conjugated mesoporous poly-azobenzene network. Role of variable Pd(0)/Pd(II) ratio on the properties of polymeric networks and their overall catalytic abilities is critically investigated. This is the first proposed example of cooperative hydrogenation by simultaneous activation of H-2 and unsaturated substrates using Mott-Schottky heterojunction between Pd NPs and the semiconducting polymer, with the help of Pd(II)-site-mediated eta-coordination. A control over selective mono-reduction of diene with identical double bonds was also obtained. The catalytic activity retained for other non-olefinic functionalities as well. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. Ti-Pd alloy catalysts were developed for the cross beta-arylmethylation between arylmethylalcohols and different primary alcohols via a hydrogen autotransfer mechanism. In this study, a novel green walnut liqueur (GWL) based on green walnuts, as the main ingredient, with the addition of fruits, aromatic plants, chocolate and honey, was produced at the pilot-scale. Antioxidant activity (AO) of the obtained GWL was determined using multiple AO assays in parallel, standard spectrophotometric (FC, DPPH and FRAP) and recently developed electrochemical ones, HydroxoPerhydroxoMercury(II) Complex and Mercury Reduction Antioxidant Power, and compared to similar commercial alcoholic beverages. Characterization of the GWL in terms of volatile and polyphenolic components was performed using SPE-GC-MS and HPLC-DAD-MS/MS, respectively. Sensory quality assessment was performed by experts in the field of sensory analysis of alcoholic beverages, using a scoring method. According to all AO assays applied, AO activity and total phenolics content of GWL were superior in comparison to commercial spirits considered. The volatile fraction of GWL was mainly composed of eugenol,alpha-terpineol and vanillin, while the most prevalent phenolic compounds were gallic (5.054 mg/L) and chlorogenic acid (1.307 mg/L) and flavonoids such as catechine (0.882 mg/L), quercetin (0.499 mg/L) and its sugar-conjugated derivatives, quercetin 3-O-glucoside (0.774 mg/L) and quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside (0.614 mg/L). Gallic acid is the major contributor to total AO activity, especially determined by DPPH and FRAP, followed by catechine, quercetin and chlorogenic acid. Among the terpenoids, contribution of eugenol to total AO activity is estimated as the highest. Excellent sensory quality (18.52 of maximum 20 scores) was ascribed to GWL. Consequently, the presence of bioactive compounds and high AO activity of GWL, in addition to high sensory quality score, indicates a high market potential for this high-value product.

A series of twenty-one 3,4-dihydropyrimidine derivatives bearing the heterocyclic 1,3-benzodioxole at position 4 in addition to different substituents at positions 2, 3 and 5 were designed and synthesized as monastrol analogs. The novel synthesized compounds were screened for their cytotoxic activity towards 60 cancer cell lines according to NCI (USA) protocol. Compounds 10b and 15 showed the best antitumor activity against most cell lines. Compound 15 was subsequently tested in 5-doses mode and displayed high selectivity towards CNS, prostate and leukemia subpanel with selectivity ratios of 22.30, 15.38 and 12.56, respectively at GI(50) level. The IC50 of compounds 9d, 10b, 12, 15 and 16 against kinesin enzyme were 3.86 +/- 0.12, 10.70 +/- 0.35, 3.95 +/- 0.12, 4.36 +/- 0.14, and 14.07 +/- 0.45 mu M respectively, while the prototype compound, monastrol, reported IC50 value of 20 +/- 0.42 mu M. The safest compound among test compounds against normal cell line (HEK 293) is 10b with IC50 value of 62.02 +/- 2.42 mu M/ml in comparison to doxorubicin (IC50 = 11.34 +/- 0.44 mu M/ml). Cell cycle analysis of SNB-75 cells treated with compound 15 showed cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase. Further, the assay of levels of active caspase-3 and caspase-9 was investigated. Moreover, Molecular docking of compounds, 9d, 10b, 12, 15, 16, monastrol and mon-97 was performed to study the interaction between inhibitors and the kinesin spindle protein allosteric binding site.

In this study, the carrier g-C3N4 was prepared by melamine, and the Ag-Pd/g-C3N4 catalyst was synthesized by the NaBH4 reduction method. Different characterization techniques, including SEM, TEM, XRD, UV-vis DRS, XPS, photoluminescence spectra (PL) and BET, were employed to investigate the morphology and optical properties of the as-prepared samples. The Ag-Pd/g-C3N4 catalyst was used for the synthesis of imine from a benzyl alcohol and aniline. The results show that when the total loading of Ag and Pd is 2 wt%, and the mass ratio of Ag and Pd is 1:1, the activity of the catalyst is the highest (The highest conversion of aniline is 86.7% and the product selectivity is > 99%.). The reaction is optimized by changing the type of solvent, the type and amount of base, the type of catalyst, and the amount of reactants. The optimal reaction conditions are 6 ml of n-hexane, 1.4 mmol of Cs2CO3, 50 mg of the Ag-Pd/g-C3N4 (2 wt%, 1:1), and 2:1 mol ratio of benzyl alcohol and aniline. Under optimal reaction conditions, alcohol derivatives and amine derivatives were investigated to determine the suitable range of the catalyst for alcohols and amines. Then, the effects of different light intensities and wavelengths on the reaction were explored. Additionally, the catalyst’s recycling ability was tested, and it was found to be relatively stable. The effect of reactive groups on the mechanism shows that the reaction is mainly achieved by the synergy between h(+), e(-) and center dot O-2(-).

The aims of this study were to produce cold-pressed oils from watermelon seeds, which were previously treated with seed boiling and roasting, and to characterize the oils and press cakes. The watermelon seeds were found as rich sources of protein, oil, and minerals. Seed boiling pretreatment resulted in a higher oil recovery (51.31%) than seed preroasting (44.21%). Seed pretreatments did not cause any difference in the fatty acid (FA), sterol, and tocopherol compositions. Linoleic acid (LNA) was the major FA (54.57 and 54.62%) with higher contents of total unsaturated (74.41 and 75.52%) FA. beta-Sitosterol (202.79 mg/100 g oil and 202.90 mg/100 g oil) and gamma-tocopherol (361.45 mg kg(-1) oil and 365.98 mg kg(-1) oil) were the major components. The oils started to crystallize at around 1.80 and 1.75 degrees C, and completely crystallized oils melted at around -35.66 and -35.78 degrees C, respectively. Seed boiling pretreatment reduced the quantity of the most phenolic compounds in the oil (51.54 and 22.74 mg kg(-1) total phenolics). The oxidative induction times of the oils were 11.91 and 11.49 min. In these cold-pressed oils, volatile compounds associated with roasted/nutty and vegetable/herbal aroma descriptions were predominantly detected. Sensory descriptive analysis indicated that the oils are poor in terms of different sensory terms. Consumer tests showed that these oils are acceptable for direct consumption. Hence, this raw material could be used to produce edible oils.
