There is a strong incentive for environmentally benign and sustainable production of organic nitriles to avoid the use of toxic cyanides. Here we report that manganese oxide nanorod-supported single-site Ru catalysts are active, selective, and stable for oxidative cyanation of various alcohols to give the corresponding nitriles with molecular oxygen and ammonia as the reactants. The very low amount of Ru (0.1 wt %) with atomic dispersion boosts the catalytic performance of manganese oxides. Experimental and theoretical results show how the Ru sites enhance the ammonia resistance of the catalyst, bolstering its performance in alcohol dehydrogenation and oxygen activation, the key steps in the oxidative cyanation. This investigation demonstrates the high efficiency of a single-site Ru catalyst for nitrile production.

Inhibitors of the enzyme xanthine oxidase (XO) with radical scavenging properties hold promise as novel agents against reperfusion injuries after ischemic events. By suppressing the formation of damaging reactive oxygen species (ROS) by XO or scavenging ROS from other sources, these compounds may prevent a buildup of ROS in the aftermath of a heart attack or stroke. To combine these two properties in a single molecule, we synthesized and characterized the non-purine XO inhibitor caffeic acid phenethylester (CAPE) and 19 derivatives using a convenient microwave-assisted Knoevenagel condensation protocol. Varying systematically the number and positions of the hydroxyl groups at the two phenyl rings, we derived structure-activity relationships based on experimentally determined XO inhibition data. Molecular docking suggested that critical enzyme/inhibitor interactions involved pi-pi interactions between the phenolic inhibitor ring and Tyr914, hydrogen bonds between inhibitor hydroxyl groups and Glu802, and hydrophobic interactions between the CAPE phenyl ring and nonpolar residues located at the entrance of the binding site. To effectively scavenge the stable radical DPPH, two hydroxyl groups in 1,2-or 1,4-position at the phenyl ring were required. Among all compounds tested, E-phenyl 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)acrylate, a CAPE analog without the ethyl tether, showed the most promising properties.

Ultrasonic-assisted reactions, as a green technique, are often more efficient compared to those traditional protocols. To this end, the selective and solvent-free oxidation of aromatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones were investigated in the presence of Co-ABDC/W at room temperature under ultrasonic irradiation conditions for the first time in this paper. The structure, particle size, thermal stability, and morphology of the fabricated heterogeneous catalyst and the products were characterized by FT-IR, EDS, FE-SEM, XRD, TGA, and GC analyses. In this regard, immobilization of tungstate had a significant effect on thermal stability (around 450 degrees C for 40% weight loss) and catalytic performance. Moreover, the efficiency of two different oxidation methods, including ultrasound irradiations and reflux, were comparatively investigated by GC spectrometry. Obtained sonoxidation results presented higher conversions ranging (84 to 100%) than reflux condition via shorter reaction times. The influences of the reaction parameters, such as hydrogen peroxide concentration, and catalyst loading, were also investigated. The proposed method offers several advantages, such as excellent conversions, selective oxidations, environmentally-benign procedure, short reaction times, and easy workup. Notably, this is the first report that focuses on using amino-functionalized MOFs with ultrasonic irradiation for selective oxidation reactions. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The purpose of this study is to define an effective synthesis for spinel-type zinc chromite (ZnCr2O4) nanoparticles by a simple microwave combustion method. The synthesized material was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and from optical properties. A magnetic property for the material was examined through the vibrating sample magnetism. The distribution of the external magnetic lines of force and the self-generated magnetic field of ferromagnetic materials was taken into account in the presence of an external magnetic field. Zinc chromite showed good performances in catalytic oxidation, and the role of particle size and shape is highlighted.

The main objective of this work was to design an innovative method to prepare heterogeneous heteropolyacid catalysts. The heteropolyacid H3PW12O40 (HPW) was modified with tin(II) by two methodologies: a conventional aqueous ion-exchange (CS) and a redox solid-state (SS). In both cases, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements evidenced that Keggin structure was preserved. All materials were active in the esterification of lactic acid with several alcohols and a mechanism was proposed. The best results were obtained for octanol and benzyl alcohol, where higher conversion values were obtained. The catalytic activity (turnover frequency, TON) showed an efficient performance for the materials prepared with 4 h of calcination (CS4h and SS4h). However, the catalyst prepared by the SS method was in accordance with the development of environmentally friendly processes.

A simple, efficient and economical liquid-liquid extraction method has been developed for quantitative extraction of mercury(II) from aqueous buffer solution using furosemide in benzyl alcohol. The effect of various parameters and of various anions and cations on the extraction of mercury(II) was investigated. The separation factor of mercury was quite high in the presence of a number of transition and rare earth metals at pH 3.5. Among strippants, sodium thiosulphate was found most suitable, and the recovery of mercury was noted to be 98%. The stoichiometric composition of the extracted species was found to be [Hg(FS)(2)].

In a reaction system, the simultaneously efficient utilization of photogenerated electrons and holes to realize the photocatalytic selective redox reactions of organics has been a hot topic. In this paper, the Zn3In2S6 samples were synthesized via a simple solvothermal method with different solvents, which could make full use of photo generated electrons and holes to achieve the photocatalytic selective transformation of aromatic alcohols to aromatic aldehydes and hydrogen evolution under mild conditions. The results show that the Zn3In2S6 synthesized with water (Zn3In2S6-W) exhibits the highest photocatalytic performance among the selected samples, with which the yields of benzaldehyde and hydrogen reach up to 732 and 708.8 pmol under light irradiation (lambda >= 380 nm) for 4 h, respectively. The molar ratios between aldehydes and hydrogen are close to 1: 1. The apparent quantum efficiency is about 6.48% for wavelength lambda = 380 10 nm over Zn3In2S6-W sample. A possible reaction mechanism for the photocatalytic selective transformation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and hydrogen evolution under light irradiation is proposed. This work highlights that a reaction system is developed to effectively make use of the photogenerated electrons and holes for selective transformation of aromatic alcohols to aromatic aldehydes and hydrogen evolution over Zn3In2S6 photocatalysts under mild conditions.

A photoredox benzyl activation was developed via formidable C(sp(3))-C(sp(3)) bond dissociation of 1-aryl acetone oxime esters, which were easily prepared from benzyl ketones. Further coupling with O- and N- nucleophiles successfully forged important benzyl ether and amines derivatives in one pot. In this process, different substitutions on oxime esters were found compatible and various primary and secondary alcohols and amines, as well as amides showed good performance as nucleophiles. Mechanistic studies by control experiments, electrochemical measurements and in-situ NMR spectra proposed a N-O bond interruption/C-C bond fragmentation/oxidation sequence to provide the key cation intermediate for the next electrophilic S-N process. The features of mild condition, short reaction time and broad substrate scope made this new strategy much promising in the transformation of benzyl compounds, which might be valuable in last-stage functionalizations.
