Atomization of noble metals enable their electrocatalysis applications with low cost, whereas the isolated mononuclear site after atomization might lead leads to limited performance. Herein, we present a general strategy of atomically confined alloying (ACA) to synthesize an electrocatalyst of single atom iridium-trapping cobalt nanosheets with dual-reactive Ir-Co sites. The atomic Ir@Co nanosheets (1.7 wt% Ir) exhibit excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a small overpotential (273 mV at 10 mA cm(-2)) and high stability, higher than that of the Ir/C catalyst (290 mV at 10 mA cm(-2)). More importantly, density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with experiments demonstrated that water oxidation proceeded on atomic Ir@Co nanosheets via a dinuclear tandem mechanism, in which Ir-Co dual sites cooperatively worked in favour of the sequential transfer from Co-OH* to Ir-O* via a Co-O-Ir intermediate, and stabilization of OOH* species by hydrogen bonding interaction. The cooperative mechanism based on a dinuclear electrocatalyst by ACA is hoped to open up more possibilities of single atom noble metal electrocatalysts for various applications.

A novel methodology for the preparation of trideuterovinyl derivatives of high purity directly from alcohols, thiols, and NH-compounds was developed. Commercially available calcium carbide and D2O acted as a D-2-acetylene source, and DMSO-d(6)was used to complete the formation of the D2C=C(D)-X fragment (X = O, S, N). Polymerization of a selected trideuterovinylated compound showed a very promising potential of these substances in the synthesis of labeled polymeric materials. Biological activity of the synthesized trideuterovinyl derivatives was evaluated and the results indicated a significant increase of cytotoxicity upon deuteration.

The first defluorinative ipso-functionalization reaction of (trifluoromethyl)alkenes is reported. This exclusively regioselective ipso-defluorooxylation of (trifluoromethyl)alkenes with oximes affords various attractive O-(1,1-difluoroallyl)oxime ethers efficiently via a chemoselective single C(sp(3))-F bond activation in the CF3 group. Catalytic transformation of alcohols via metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions is very important, but it typically relies on a multistep procedure. We here report a dynamic kinetic cross-coupling approach for the direct functionalization of alcohols. The feasibility of this strategy is demonstrated by a nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile arylation reaction of benzyl alcohols with (hetero)aryl electrophiles. The reaction proceeds with a broad substrate scope of both coupling partners. The electron-rich, electron-poor, and ortho-/meta-/para-substituted (hetero)aryl electrophiles (e.g., Ar-OTf, Ar-I, Ar-Br, and inert Ar-Cl) all coupled well. Most of the functionalities, including aldehyde, ketone, amide, ester, nitrile, sulfone, furan, thiophene, benzothiophene, pyridine, quinolone, Ar-SiMe3, Ar-Bpin, and Ar-SnBu3, were tolerated. The dynamic nature of this method enables the direct arylation of benzylic alcohol in the presence of various nucleophilic groups, including nonactivated primary/secondary/tertiary alcohols, phenols, and free indoles. It thus offers a robust alternative to existing methods for the precise construction of diarylmethanes. The synthetic utility of the method was demonstrated by a concise synthesis of biologically active molecules and by its application to peptide modification and conjugation. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction of in situ formed benzyl oxalates with nickel, possibly via a radical process, is an initial step in the reaction with aryl electrophiles.

The synthesis of benzosultams has been achieved through a gold(I)-catalyzed ammonium formation strategy. Starting from easily available N-(2-alkynyl)-phenylsulfonyl azetidine derivatives, a cyclization reaction generated a spiroammonium gold intermediate that was ring-opened by nucleophilic alcohol or indole. This new methodology is compatible with the large variation in the substrates and nucleophiles and allowed the formation of benzosultams in high yield (18-98, 20 examples). This strategy also allowed the preparation of benzosultam analogs via iododeauration and subsequent cross-coupling reactions.

Emulsion is inevitable during the aqueous extraction of oil from oilseeds. In this study, a new aqueous extraction method for camellia oil is investigated. During the extraction, the emulsified oil is collected, frozen, and thawed, and the free oil is obtained (AEEF). The optimal processing conditions are as follows: three times as much water as camellia seed powder (w/w), grinding at 70 degrees C for 6 min, repeating 2 cycles to collect the emulsified oil; then the emulsified oil is frozen (-20 degrees C) /thawed (50 degrees C) for 2 cycles. The yield of camellia oil is 89.37 +/- 0.51%, which is significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of microwave-assisted aqueous enzymatic extraction (MAAEE, 83.05 +/- 1.14%), and is similar to that of cold press extraction (CPE, 90.85 +/- 2.05%), as well as solvent extraction (SE) coupled with refining. Additionally, the total oxidation value (TOTOX) of the free oil extracted by using AEEF (AEEF-Oil, 6.82 +/- 0.12%) is significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those of MAAEE, CEP, or SE. In comparison to SE-Oil and CEP-Oil, AEEF-Oil has higher (p < 0.05) contents of alpha-tocopherol and squalene, and lower (p < 0.05) benzo(a)pyrene contents, and contains more favorable natural volatile compounds. The results indicate that the novel AEEF may be a promising aqueous extraction method. Practical Application: The novel aqueous extraction method for camellia oil by emulsified oil - frozen/thawed has acceptable oil yields. The obtained camellia oil has high levels of bioactive components, low contents of hazardous substances, and more characteristic volatile flavor compounds. AEEF is an improved aqueous extraction technology for edible oil without refining and using n-hexane, which could be potentially applied in industrial production of camellia oil due to its safety, nutrition, and environment-friendly treatments. Gastrodia elata is a famous traditional Chinese herb with medicinal and edible application. In this study, nine polybenzyls (1-9), including six new ones (2-5, 7 and 9), were isolated from the EtOAc extract of G. elata. Five compounds 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8 were found to activate melatonin receptors. Especially, compound 1 showed agonistic effects on MT1 and MT2 receptors with EC50 values of 237 and 244 mu M. For better understanding their structure-activity relationships (SARs), ten polybenzyl analogs were further synthesized and assayed for their activities on melatonin receptors. Preliminary SARs study suggested that two para-hydroxy groups were the key pharmacophore for maintaining activity. Molecular docking simulations verified that compound 1 could strongly interact with MT2 receptor by bonding to Phe 118, Gly 121, His 208, Try 294 and Ala 297 residues.

Heptazine units with highly rich nitrogen sites were employed to fabricate a new porous organic polymer (POP-HE) via direct coupling of 2,5,8-trichloro-s-heptazine and 4,4′,4 ”,4”’-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetraaniline with the mild base N, N’-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution. POP-HE displays good CO2 uptake capacity (50.6 cm(3) g(-1), 10 wt%, 1 bar/273 K) and highly selectively adsorptive separation of CO2 over CH4 under ambient conditions. Impressively, at 273 K, the predicted IAST selectivity of POP-HE is 47.0-13.4 for the natural gas mixture (CO2/CH4 = 5:95) at pressures varying from 0 to 1 atm. Meanwhile, the result of calculated band gap value based on Tauc plot motivated us to investigate its photocatalytic activity. POP-HE was applied as heterogeneous photocatalyst for visible light-induced selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde, and exhibited great conversion of 33.6% under irradiation of white LED light, which is much higher than that of g-C3N4. Moreover, POP-HE can be recycled up to three times without significant decrease in catalytic activity.

Biomass propagation for the production of active dry yeasts (ADY) is an economically important industrial process where cellular oxidative stress significantly limits yield and fermentative capacity in the final product. Oxidative stress affects macromolecular cell components, such as lipid and proteins, thus impairing many different cellular processes. Its detrimental effect is prevented and alleviated by complex signalling, detoxifying and protein protecting systems, which can be induced by antioxidant treatments. Here we validate the general beneficial effect of argan oil treatment in bench-top simulations of industrial yeast biomass propagation as an effective technological strategy to improve the biomass yield and fermentative capacity of ADY for subsequent wine making in grape must. We also identify biochemical and metabolic clues, and protein and enzymatic targets which contribute to the improved performance of yeasts in ADY production, which is relevant for future food industry applications.
