A highly versatile and efficient ultrasound promoted synthesis of xanthenedione derivatives is achieved through condensation of dimedone with various aromatic aldehydes using boric acid as catalyst in ethanol-water medium. The advantages of this method being, mild reaction conditions, short reaction time, easy work-up, purification of products by non-chromatographic methods and additionally this method provides excellent yields. Two of the Xanthendiones derivatives 3a and 3b gave good crystals on recrystallization and their molecular structures were confirmed by crystallographic studies. The molecules in the crystal lattice are held together by weak intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot N interactions. Further insights into these interactions using Hirshfeld surface analysis and DFT/B3LYP studies show that in compound 3a H center dot center dot center dot H (54.7%), O center dot center dot center dot H (18.3%) and in 3b H center dot center dot center dot H (53.7%), O center dot center dot center dot H (17.6%) are the major contributors to the intermolecular interactions which stabilize the crystal structures. In order to determine molecular electrical transport properties, we studied the energy difference between Highest Occupied, HOMO, and Lowest Unoccupied, LUMO orbitals and the HOMO and LUMO energy gap for compounds 3a and 3b was found to be 3.9261 eV and 4.6436 eV respectively. The 2D fingerprint plot provided percentage contribution of each individual atom-to-atom interactions. The Mulliken atomic charges and molecular electrostatic potential on molecular van der Waals surface were calculated to know the electrophilic and nucleophilic regions of the molecular surface. The present paper is devoted to the search for drug-like molecules with anticancer properties using the thiazolo[3,2-b][1,2,4]triazole-6-one scaffold. A series of 24 novel thiazolo-[3,2-b][1,2,4]triazole-6-ones with 5-aryl(heteryl)idene- and 5-aminomethylidene-moieties has been synthesized employing three-component and three-stage synthetic protocols. A mixture of Z/E-isomers was obtained in solution for the synthesized 5-aminomethylidene-thiazolo[3,2-b]-[1,2,4]triazole-6-ones. The compounds have been studied for their antitumor activity in the NCI 60 lines screen. Some compounds present excellent anticancer properties at 10 mu M. Derivatives 2h and 2i were the most active against cancer cell lines without causing toxicity to normal somatic (HEK293) cells. A preliminary SAR study had been performed for the synthesized compounds.

Guaiacyl acetone (GA) is a phenolic carbonyl emitted in significant quantities by wood combustion that undergoes rapid aqueous-phase oxidation to produce aqueous secondary organic aerosol (aqSOA). We investigate the photosensitized oxidation of GA by an organic triplet excited state (C-3*) and the formation and aging of the resulting aqSOA in wood smokeinfluenced fog/cloud water. The chemical transformations of the aqSOA were characterized in situ using a high-resolution time-offlight aerosol mass spectrometer. Additionally, aqSOA samples collected over different time periods were analyzed using highperformance liquid chromatography coupled with a photodiode array detector and a high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometer (HPLC-PDA-HRMS) to provide details on the molecular composition and optical properties of brown carbon (BrC) chromophores. Our results show efficient formation of aqSOA from GA, with an average mass yield around 80%. The composition and BrC properties of the aqSOA changed significantly over the course of reaction. Three generations of aqSOA products were identified via positive matrix factorization analysis of the aerosol mass spectrometry data. Oligomerization and functionalization dominated the production of the first-generation aqSOA, whereas fragmentation and ring-opening reactions controlled the formation of more oxidized second-and third-generation products. Significant formation of BrC was observed in the early stages of the photoreaction, while organic acids were produced throughout the experiment. High-molecular weight molecules (m/z > 180) with high aromaticity were identified via HPLC-PDA-HRMS and were found to account for a majority of the UV-vis absorption of the aqSOA.

An efficient environmentally benign method for the synthesis of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole derivatives via one-pot multicomponent has been reported using aqueous extract of Acacia concinna pods as a naturally occurring surfactant type catalyst. The present surfactant medium was found superior and additive free for the condensation of o-phenylene diamine and two equivalent of aldehyde to yield 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole derivatives in excellent yields under mild conditions. A simple, economically viable and biocompatible catalytic system suggested the possible utility of the present protocol for the large scale construction of benzimidazole derivatives.

The Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reaction is an attractive approach to selectively reduce carbonyl groups, and the design of advanced catalysts is the key for these kinds of interesting reactions. Herein, we fabricated a novel zirconium organoborate using 1,4-benzenediboronic acid (BDB) as the precursor for MPV reduction. The prepared Zr-BDB had excellent catalytic performance for the MPV reduction of various biomass-derived carbonyl compounds (i.e., levulinate esters, aldehydes and ketones). More importantly, the number of borate groups on the ligands significantly affected the catalytic activity of the Zr-organic ligand hybrids, owing to the activation role of borate groups on hydroxyl groups in the hydrogen source. Detailed investigations revealed that the excellent performance of Zr-BDB was contributed by the synergetic effect of Zr4+ and borate. Notably, this is the first work to enhance the activity of Zr-based catalysts in MPV reactions using borate groups.

In this work, a series of diaryl benzo[b][1,4]thiazepine derivatives D1-D36 were synthesized and screened as tubulin polymerization inhibitors with anti-tumor potency. They were designed by introducing the seven member ring benzothiazepine as the linker for CA-4 modification for the first time. Among them, the hit compound D8 showed potential on inhibiting the growth of several cancer cell lines (IC50 values: 1.48 mu M for HeLa, 1.47 mu M for MCF-7, 1.52 mu M for HT29 and 1.94 mu M for A549), being comparable with the positive controls Colchicine and CA-4P. The calculated IC50 value of D8 as an tubulin polymerization inhibitor was 1.20 mu M. The results of the flow cytometry assay revealed that D8 could induce the mitotic catastrophe and the death of living cancer cells. D8 also indicated the anti-vascular activity. The possible binding pattern was implied by docking simulation, inferring the possibility of introducing interactions with the nearby tubulin chain. Since the novel structural trial has been conducted with preliminary discussion, this work might stimulate new ideas in further modification of tubulin-related anti-cancer agents and therapeutic approaches.

The oil and gas industry suffers from severe economic impact due to the corrosion of pipelines during the industrial oil-well acidizing process and because of the sweet corrosion of steel. One of the most common solutions to counter this issue is applying organic compounds as corrosion inhibitors. Conventionally used inhibitors are quite cumbersome to synthesize, are costly, and most are toxic. Therefore, there exists a need for research and development of novel, cost-effective, and eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors showing efficient inhibition performance. The present work describes the basics of corrosion, its economic impact, and the main strategies to counter this issue. Fundamentals of sweet corrosion, the mechanism involved, the influence of various governing factors, and the limitations of the existing inhibitor chemistries are explained. Some of the prominent classes of the environmentally benign sweet corrosion inhibitors such as the biopolymers, heterocyclic molecules, and pharmaceutical products are also outlined. Hydroarylation is an effective strategy to rapidly increase the complexity of organic structures by transforming flat alkene moieties into three-dimensional frameworks. Many strategies have already been developed to achieve the hydroarylation of styrenes, however most of these reports examine the hydroarylation of unpolar, beta-mono- or beta-unsubstituted styrenes, while exploring mainly electron-rich benzene nucleophiles. Herein, we report a mild and general catalytic system for the selective hydroheteroarylation of multiply substituted styrenes and heteroaromatic styrenes. The heteroleptic complexes comprise the synthesized ligands 4 ‘-(2-thienyl)- 2,2 ‘:6 ‘,2 ”-terpyridine) or (4 ‘-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2,2 ‘:6 ‘,2 ”-terpyridine and (dimethyl 5-(pyrimidin-5-yl)isophthalate). The new complexes [Ru(4 ‘-(2-thienyl)-2,2 ‘:6 ‘,2 ”-terpyridine)(5-(pyrimidin-5-yl)-isophthalic acid)Cl-2] (9), [Ru(4 ‘-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2,2 ‘:6 ‘,2 ”-terpyridine)(5-(pyrimidin-5-yl)-isophthalic acid)Cl-2] (10), and [Ru(4 ‘-(2-thienyl)-2,2 ‘:6 ‘,2 ”-terpyridine)(5-(pyrimidin-5-yl)-isophthalic acid)(NCS)(2)] (11) were characterized by(1)H- and(13)C-NMR spectroscopy, C, H, N, and S elemental analysis, UPLC-ESI-MS, TGA, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The biological activities of the synthesized ligands and their Ru (II) complexes as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer agents were evaluated. Furthermore, the toxicity of the synthesized compounds was studied and compared with the standard drugs, namely, diclofenac potassium and ibuprofen, using hemolysis assay. The results indicated that the ligands and the complex9possess superior anti-inflammatory activities inhibiting albumin denaturation (89.88-100%) compared with the standard drugs (51.5-88.37%) at a concentration of 500 mu g g(-1). These activities were related to the presence of the chelating N-atoms in the ligands and the exchangeable chloro- groups in the complex. Moreover, the chloro- and thiophene groups in complex9produce a higher anticancer activity compared with its isothiocyanate derivative in the complex11and the 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl moiety in complex10. Considering the toxicity results, the synthesized ligands are nontoxic or far less toxic compared with the standard drugs and the metal complexes. Therefore, these newly synthesized compounds are promising anti-inflammatory agents in addition to their moderate unique broad antimicrobial activity.

Lignin from the Chinese quince (Chaenomeles sinensis) fruit offers a promising source of natural antioxidant for industrial applications. However, the utilization of Chinese quince fruit lignin is restricted by its inhomogeneous nature. Accordingly, Chinese quince fruit lignin was sequentially fractionated with organic solvents of increasing dissolving capacity to prepare homogeneous lignin fractions. The GPC (gel permeation chromatography) results showed that the molecular weights of lignin fractions increased from dichloromethane fraction to dioxane/water fraction. The five lignin fractions were also compared with respect to yield, carbohydrate content, thermal stability, inter-unit linkages, S/G ratios, and phenolic OH content. Among the five fractions, the ethyl acetate fraction showed a lower proportion of p-o-tv linkages (48.4%), the highest thermal stability, the highest phenolic OH content (2.8 mmol/g), and the highest DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging index and reducing power. The high antioxidant performance of the ethyl acetate fraction implies that it can be used as a natural antioxidant. This study shows that sequential solvent fractionation of lignin can produce homogeneous fractions with enhanced antioxidant performance. In addition, it demonstrates that Chinese quince fruits are a potentially valuable natural resource.
