Deep eutectic solvents are a class of new generation green solvents formed from two or more components, which furnish a new homogeneous liquid phase with lower melting point than the individual components. Here, for the first time, dual role of DES as catalyst and reaction medium was studied for the synthesis of symmetric dihydropyridine derivatives from aldehyde, ethyl acetoacetate and ammonium acetate. The present article reports the suitability of six DESs for Hantzsch dihydropyridine synthesis at room temperature. Among this, DES 2 (ZrOCl2.8H(2)O and ethylene glycol at 1:2 ratio) was found to be the catalyst of choice with excellent recyclability. The role of DES in the present protocol was to activate the reactants through strong hydrogen bonding interaction and provide suitable medium for the reaction. The major advantages of DESs for the titled reaction are the easy preparation, low cost, non-volatility, biodegradability, simple catalytic process, excellent conversion and the reusability.

Upgrading of lignin derived bio-oil is an essential step for producing sustainable bio-based chemicals and fuel. Taken into account that alpha hydroxyl is the abundant functional group in lignin, high effective and selective catalytic alcoholysis for cleaving the C-alpha-OH linkages would be desirable. However, an in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanisms involved in the cleavage of C-aromatic-C-alpha and C-alpha-O bonds over a novel catalyst is still needed. Herein, we report an efficient liquid-phase hydrogen transfer strategy for the selective hydrodeoxygenation of a non-phenolic lignin model compound, 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl (veratryl) alcohol, under mild conditions. By employing iso-propanol as solvent and H-donor, and palladium nanoparticles immobilized on nitrogen-doped carbon (Pd/CNX) as efficient multifunctional catalyst, veratryl alcohol dehydroxylation exhibited almost 100% conversion along with very high selectivity for 1,2-dimethoxy-benzene (46%) and 3,4-dimethoxytoluene (54%). Compared with other Pd catalysis, the Pd/CNX has excellent catalytic performances and exhibits higher selectivity for 3,4-dimethoxytoluene under incorporation with 1% HCOOH at 220 degrees C. The proportion of Pd (0) significantly increases in Pd/CNX catalyst when introduced into N precursor because of its highly dispersed Pd NPs and preventing the reoxidation of Pd (0). The dehydrogenation reaction occurred through the hydrogen generation of a secondary alcohol. Then, the C-alpha-OH and C-aromatic-C-alpha bonds of veratryl alcohol were selectively cleaved by catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis. Despite the development of targeted therapies in cancer, the problem of multidrug resistance (MDR) is still unsolved. Most patients with metastatic cancer die from MDR. Transmembrane efflux pumps as the main cause of MDR have been addressed by developed inhibitors, but early inhibitors of the most prominent and longest known efflux pump P-glycoprotein (P-gp) were disappointing. Those inhibitors have been used without knowledge about the expression of P-gp by the treated tumor. Therefore the use of inhibitors of transmembrane efflux pumps in clinical settings is reconsidered as a promising strategy in the case of the respective efflux pump expression. We discovered novel symmetric inhibitors of the symmetric efflux pump MRP4 encoded by the ABCC4 gene. MRP4 is involved in many kinds of cancer with resistance to anticancer drugs. All compounds showed better activities than the best known MRP4 inhibitor MK571 in an MRP4-overexpressing cell line assay, and the activities could be related to the various substitution patterns of aromatic residues within the symmetric molecular framework. One of the best compounds was demonstrated to overcome the MRP4-mediated resistance in the cell line model to restore the anticancer drug sensitivity as a proof of concept.

Herein, a new magnetic metal-organic frameworks based on Fe3O4 (NMMOFs) with porous and high surface area materials were synthesized. Then, NMMOFs were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, elemental mapping, energy dispersive X-ray (EDS), TG, DTG, VSM, and N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms (BET). Fe3O4@Co(BDC)-NH2 as a magnetic porous catalyst was applied for synthesis of novel fused pyridines and 1,4-dihydropyridines with pyrazole and pyrimidine moieties as suitable drug candidates under ultrasonic irradiation. The significant advantages of the presented methodology are mild, facile workup, high yields, short reaction times, high thermal stability, and reusability of the described NMMOFs catalyst.

Solvent free synthesis of dihydropyrano[3,2-b]chromenediones was formulated via multicomponent reactions of kojic acid, dimedone and several substituted aromatic aldehydes catalyzed with BCl3. Reactions progressed efficiently and the corresponding heterocyclic products were obtained in good to high yields within short period. The developed protocol is one of the better and efficient alternative methods for the synthesis of dihydropyrano[3,2-b]chromenediones. The simple reaction procedure, easy separation of products, radially available catalyst are certain benefits of this reported protocol.

Background Triazole is an important heterocyclic moiety that occupies a unique position in heterocyclic chemistry, due to its large number of biological activities. It exists in two isomeric forms i.e. 1,2,4-triazole and 1,2,3-triazole and is used as core molecule for the design and synthesis of many medicinal compounds. 1,2,4-Triazole possess broad spectrum of therapeutically interesting drug candidates such as analgesic, antiseptic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-urease, anti-inflammatory, diuretics, anticancer, anticonvulsant, antidiabetic and antimigraine agents. Methods The structures of all synthesized compounds were characterized by physicochemical properties and spectral means (IR and NMR). The synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive (B. subtilis), Gram-negative (P. aeruginosa and E. coli) bacterial and fungal (C. albicans and A. niger) strains by tube dilution method using ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin and fluconazole as standards. In-vitro antioxidant and anti-urease screening was done by DPPH assay and indophenol method, respectively. The in-vitro anticancer evaluation was carried out against MCF-7 and HCT116 cancer cell lines using 5-FU as standards. Results, discussion and conclusion The biological screening results reveal that the compounds T-5 (MICBS, EC = 24.7 mu M, MICPA, (CA) = 12.3 mu M) and T-17 (MICAN = 27.1 mu M) exhibited potent antimicrobial activity as comparable to standards ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin (MICCipro = 18.1 mu M, MICAmo = 17.1 mu M) and fluconazole (MICFlu = 20.4 mu M), respectively. The antioxidant evaluation showed that compounds T-2 (IC50 = 34.83 mu g/ml) and T-3 (IC50 = 34.38 mu g/ml) showed significant antioxidant activity and comparable to ascorbic acid (IC50 = 35.44 mu g/ml). Compounds T-3 (IC50 = 54.01 mu g/ml) was the most potent urease inhibitor amongst the synthesized compounds and compared to standard thiourea (IC50 = 54.25 mu g/ml). The most potent anticancer activity was shown by compounds T-2 (IC50 = 3.84 mu M) and T-7 (IC50 = 3.25 mu M) against HCT116 cell lines as compared to standard 5-FU (IC50 = 25.36 mu M).
