The alpha-methylated chalcones 7a-7e behave as P-type photochromic substances with photo-stationary states (PSS) as high as 15:85 when irradiated at 350 nm. These compounds are easily accessible in pure E-configuration by aldol condensation or by oxidative coupling/elimination. The alpha-methyl groups make these compounds potentially reactive with singlet oxygen following the gem-rule that predicts O-1(2) regioselectivity. Even after long irradiations times in the presence of the singlet oxygen sensitizer tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) and oxygen, however, no oxygenation products were detected. Under these conditions, all substrates were converted into 9:1 E/Z-mixtures despite the use of low-energy light that does not allow direct or sensitized excitation of the substrates 7. Additionally, chalcone 7a reduced the singlet oxygen reactivity of the tiglic ketone 3a by about a factor of two, indicating substantial physical quenching of singlet oxygen by the alpha-methylated chalcones 7a-7e. Thus, a singlet oxygen-induced E/Z-isomerization involving 1,2-dioxatetra-methylene biradicals that leads to triplet oxygen and thermodynamic E/Z-mixtures is postulated and supported by quantum chemical (DFT)-calculations.

Multi-component synthesis of functionalized pyrrole derivatives was achieved via a fourcomponent condensation reaction of ethyl acetoacetate/methyl acetoacetate, aromatic amines, nitromethane, and aromatic aldehydes using triethanolammonium acetate ([TEAH][OAc]) ionic liquid as a green solvent and catalyst. Unsaturated vegetable oils and their corresponding fatty acid derivatives constitute interesting renewable platforms for the preparation of heterocycles, notably through the formation of oxygenated intermediates. In this work, fatty imidazoles were prepared from the corresponding 1,2-diketones through Debus-Radziszewski reaction. The reaction was optimized under microwave irradiation using a 1,2-diketone derived from methyl oleate and ammonium acetate as a nitrogen source. Using benzaldehyde as a model substrate, the reaction occurs at 180 degrees C for 5 min and the desired imidazole was formed in 96 % GC yield. A range of aldehydes was tested under the optimized conditions and the corresponding imidazoles were obtained in 33-99 % isolated yields (20 examples).

DNA-encoded combinatorial chemical library (DEL) technology, an approach that combines the power of genetics and chemistry, has emerged as an invaluable tool in drug discovery. Skeletal diversity plays a fundamental importance in DEL applications, and relies heavily on novel DNA-compatible chemical reactions. The highly enantioselective synthesis of p-anisoin was achieved via the benzoin condensation of a prochiral p-anisaldehyde using achiral NHC catalysts such as vitamin B1. In this reaction, p-anisoin crystallized as a conglomerate, and the deracemization of racemic p-anisoin under basic conditions was efficiently performed by Viedma ripening. Benzodiazepines (BZDs) have been widely used in neurological disorders such as insomnia, anxiety, and epilepsy. The use of classical BZDs, e.g., diazepam, has been limited due to adverse effects such as interaction with alcohol, ataxia, amnesia, psychological and physical dependence, and tolerance. In the quest for new benzodiazepine agonists with more selectivity and low adverse effects, novel derivatives of 4,6-diphenylpyrimidin-2-ol were designed, synthesized, and evaluated. In this series, compound 2, 4-(2-(benzyloxy)phenyl)-6-(4-fluorophenyl) pyrimidin-2-ol, was the most potent analogue in radioligand binding assay with an IC50 value of 19 nM compared to zolpidem (IC50 = 48 nM), a nonbenzodiazepine central BZD receptor (CBR) agonist. Some compounds with a variety of affinities in radioligand receptor binding assay were selected for in vivo evaluations. Compound 3 (IC50 = 25 nM), which possessed chlorine instead of fluorine in position 4 of the phenyl ring, exhibited an excellent ED50 value in most in vivo tests. Proper sedative-hypnotic effects, potent anticonvulsant activity, appropriate antianxiety effect, and no memory impairment probably served compound 3, a desirable candidate as a benzodiazepine agonist. The pharmacological effects of compound 3 were antagonized by flumazenil, a selective BZD receptor antagonist, confirming the BZD receptors? involvement in the biological effects of the novel ligand.

The aroma components of cooked beef meatball stored for different times (0, 30, 60, and 90 days) were analyzed by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) combined with gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry (GC-O-MS). Sensory evaluation, odor activity value (OAV), and aroma dilution analysis were used to analyze the variation of volatile flavor substances. A total of 80 volatile compounds was identified in cooked beef balls during storage by SPME, 32 of which were aroma-active; while 42 were identified by SAFE, 15 were aroma-active. Only when the two extraction methods are combined a comprehensive analysis be conducted. The sensory evaluation results show that the overall aroma profile began to weaken and the overall acceptability gradually decreased during storage. It was found that hexanal, 1-octene-3-ol, linalool, 2-ethyl hexyl acetate, diallyl disulfide, eugenol, alpha-pinene, and anisole were the key aroma components of cooked beef meatballs during storage. Practical applications Beef meatball is a spherical food made by adding various spices and ingredients to minced beef together. It is rich in flavor, red in color, and tender in taste, but the study on the volatile compounds of beef meatball aroma is less. By comprehensive flavor analysis of gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry (GC-O-MS) with sensory evaluation, it was found that hexanal, 1-octene-3-ol, linalool, 2-ethyl hexyl acetate, diallyl disulfide, eugenol, alpha-pinene, and anisole were the key aroma components of cooked beef meatballs during storage. And during the storage of cooked beef ball, its overall aroma began to weaken and the overall acceptability gradually decreased. So by adding natural antioxidant substances and shortening the storage period, the flavor quality of cooked beef ball could be controlled and improved.

In the current research, much attention is paid to heterogenized nanostructure. Herein, we report the green synthesis magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) of cobalt ferrite by the immobilization of erbium (Er) coated with folic acid (FA) which show effective catalytic properties and recyclability. Full characterizations with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray atomic mapping, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy techniques were undertaken to uncover structural properties of the prepared magnetic catalyst. The obtained nanohybrid complexes as efficient, recyclable, and green heterogeneous systems pave the way for producing pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidinone and dihydropyrano[3,2-c]chromenes derivatives by the one-pot three-component condensation reaction of various aldehydes, malononitrile, and hydroxycoumarin or barbituric acid in green condition. This easily prepared organometalic catalyst presents many superiorities such as operational simplicity, high yield, short reaction time, utilization of commercially available or easily accessible starting materials, eco-friendly properties, and excellent purity. Most importantly, erbium-FA-coated CoFe2O4 can be easily separated and recycled from the reaction system using an external magnetic field. The magnetically recoverable biocatalyst can be recycled and reused six times while maintaining high activities. The activity of the magnetic catalyst can be maintained at more than 80% of that of the previous cycle. This research solves the recovery problem encountered in industrial applications of biocatalysts and presents a clean and green method for preparing pyrimidinones and chromenes.
