A rhodium-catalyzed tandem intermolecular hydroacylation of terminal alkyne-substituted secondary alcohols with chelating aldehydes and deconjugative isomerization of the resulting alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones for the preparation of synthetically valuable 1,4-diketones is developed. Of note, the completely atom-economical protocol can be extended to the alkynyl alcohols with appropriate carbon chain length, from which 1,5-diketone and 1,6-diketone were obtained involving the short-range deconjugative isomerization. Given its robustness, broad substrate scope, and excellent regioselectivity, this approach provides a promising platform for the synthesis of diverse diketones.

A new ONO-tridentate Schiff base ligand (H2L) derived from 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde and nicotinic hydrazide was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, UV-Vis, and powder XRD studies. Then, oxovanadium(V) and dioxomolybdenum(VI) Schiff base complexes, VOL and MoO2L, were also prepared and characterized by different techniques. Moreover, the catalytic activities of both complexes were investigated for the synthesis of benzimidazoles, benzoxazoles, and benzothiazoles under reflux conditions as well as through ultrasonic irradiation. The results revealed several advantages of this procedure, including high product yields, short reaction times, facile work-up procedure, simplicity in operation, eco-friendly reaction conditions, and green aspects by avoiding toxic catalysts and solvents.

We describe herein an alternative transition-metal-free procedure to access 3,4-bis(butylselanyl)selenophenes and the so far unprecedented 3-(butylselanyl)-4-alkoxyselenophenes. The protocol involves the 5-endo-dig electrophilic cyclization of 1,3-diynes promoted by electrophilic organoselenium species, generated in situ through the oxidative cleavage of the Se-Se bond of dibutyl diselenide using Oxone(R) as a green oxidant. The selective formation of the title products was achieved by controlling the solvent identity and the amount of dibutyl diselenide. By using 4.0 equiv of dibutyl diselenide and acetonitrile as solvent at 80 degrees C, four examples of 3,4-bis(butylselanyl)selenophenes were obtained in moderate to good yields (40-78%). When 3.0 equiv of dibutyl diselenide were used, in the presence of aliphatic alcohols as solvent/nucleophiles under reflux, 10 3-(butylselanyl)-4-alkoxyselenophenes were selectively obtained in low to good yields (15-80%).

A recyclable organic photoreductant (1 mol % CBZ6)-catalyzed reductive (pinacol) coupling of aldehydes, ketones, and imines has been developed. Irradiated by purple light (407 nm) using triethylamine as an electron donor, a variety of 1,2-diols and 1,2-diamines could be prepared. The oxidation potential of the excited state of CBZ6 is established as -1.92 V (vs saturated calomel electrode (SCE)). The relative high reductive potential enables the reductive coupling of carbonyl compounds and their derivatives. CBZ6 can be prepared in gram scale and is acid/base- or air-stable. A series of new 17-cyanopyridine derivatives of pregnenolone have been synthesized, and their anti-proliferative activities against different human cancer cell lines were tested. The extensive structure-activity relationship (SAR) data suggested that the introduction of 2-amino-4-aryl-3-cyanopyridine to the D ring of pregnenolone may increase the anti-cancer activity. Among the products, the most potent compound 4j exhibited good growth inhibition against all the tested cells especially for PC- 3 cells with an IC50 value of 2.0 mu M. Further mechanistic studies showed that 4j inhibited the formation of cell colonies and migration, increased the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in PC-3 cells in a concentration-dependent manner, and induced necroptosis through the phosphorylation of receptor interacting protein 1/3 (P-RIP1/3) and phosphorylation of mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein (P-MLKL) pathway.
