Specific and tunable modification to the optical properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is demonstrated through direct encapsulation into the nanotube interior of guest molecules with widely varying static dielectric constants. Filled through simple ingestion of the guest molecule, each SWCNT population is demonstrated to display a robust modification to absorbance, fluorescence, and Raman spectra. Over 30 distinct compounds, covering static dielectric constants from 1.8 to 109, are inserted in large diameter SWCNTs (d = 1.104-1.524 nm) and more than 10 compounds in small diameter SWCNTs (d = 0.747-1.153 nm), demonstrating that the general effect of filler dielectric on the nanotube optical properties is a monotonic energy reduction (red-shifting) of the optical transitions with increased magnitude of the dielectric constant. Systematic fitting of the two-dimensional fluorescence-excitation and Raman spectra additionally enables determination of the critical filling diameter for each molecule and distinguishing of overall trends from specific guest-host interactions. Comparisons to predictions from existing theory are presented, and specific guest molecule/SWCNT chirality combinations that disobey the general trend and theory are identified. A general increase of the fluorescence intensity and line narrowing is observed for low dielectric constants, with long linear alkane filled SWCNTs exhibiting emission intensities approaching those of empty SWCNTs. These results demonstrate an exploitable modulation in the optical properties of SWCNTs and provide a foundation for examining higher-order effects, such as due to nonbulk-like molecule stacking, in host-guest interactions in well-controlled nanopore size materials.

A new strategy is presented for enhancing the catalytic activity of cross-linked chitosan beads. More precisely, chitosan beads were cross linked with glutaraldehyde and then, vinyl functionalized. In the next step, the vinyl-functionalized beads were polymerized with the as-prepared 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium bromide to furnish polyionic liquid on beads. The resultant compositewas subsequently utilized as a metal-free catalyst for catalyzing some classic organic transformations, including Knoevenagel condensation reaction and syntheses of tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyrans and pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidines in aqueous media under mild reaction conditions. It was found that the novel composite could efficiently promote all of the examined reactions to afford the corresponding products in high yields. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited high recyclability for all reactions. The comparative studies also approved that the activity of the composite was superior compared to cross-linked bead and polyionic liquid. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanostructured and reusable 3d-metal catalysts that operate with high activity and selectivity in important chemical reactions are highly desirable. Here, a cobalt catalyst was developed for the synthesis of primary amines via reductive amination employing hydrogen as the reducing agent and easy-to-handle ammonia, dissolved in water, as the nitrogen source. The catalyst operates under very mild conditions (1.5 mol% catalyst loading, 50 degrees C and 10 bar H-2 pressure) and outperforms commercially available noble metal catalysts (Pd, Pt, Ru, Rh, Ir). A broad scope and a very good functional group tolerance were observed. The key for the high activity seemed to be the used support: an N-doped amorphous carbon material with small and turbostratically disordered graphitic domains, which is microporous with a bimodal size distribution and with basic NH functionalities in the pores.

An ‘on-water’ protocol has been developed for the synthesis of combretastatin A-4 (CA-4) analogues by cyclization of polarized triaryldivinyl ketones using hydrochloric acid as a promoter in 45-95% yields. The reaction time was reduced by about 30 times due to ultrasonic irradiation at ambient temperature. The other advantages of this new method are operational simplicity, easy workup, no column purification, and applicability on a gram-scale. A general asymmetric deconstructive alkynylation of cyclic oximes with terminal alkynes was reported using copper/chiral cinchona alkaloid-based N,N,P-ligand catalysts and used to produce more than 60 examples of enantioenriched gamma- and delta-alkynyl nitriles in a highly functional group-compatible manner. A wide variety of low-cost terminal alkynes and easily available cyclic oximes with substituent diversity were found to be well tolerated with the current asymmetric transformation with good functional group tolerance. The resulting chiral alkynyl nitriles are intermediates, which could be converted into skeletally diverse chiral molecules, including delta-alkynyl amides, epsilon-alkenyl carbamate, and zeta-keto nitrile, under suitable reaction conditions.

Exploring catalytic processes performed under natural conditions is interesting, but there remains a great challenge in developing highly efficient catalysts for natural oxidation of alcohols. Herein, we report a chloroplast-like catalyst comprised of photoactive carbon dots (CDs), catalytically active Pt nanoparticles, and amphiphilic nanotubes. Under simulated and real natural reaction conditions, our catalysts exhibited remarkable activity and long-term reusability for the oxidation of various alcohols, significantly outperforming that of other counterpart catalysts and reported thermal/photocatalytic systems. It was demonstrated that when the carbon dots and the amphiphilic nanotubes respectively played a role in the light-harvesting and the substrate transport the Pt/CDs heterointerface acted as the active center for the matter conversion. Such an elaborate cooperation, an advanced process in the photosynthesis of plant, contributed to the excellent catalytic performance. This contribution provides a new design concept for artificial photocatalysts, which is very promising for developing sustainable catalytic processes.
