Aims and Objectives: Microwave-assisted condensation of acetophenone 1 and aromatic aldehydes 2 gave chalcone analogs 3, which were cyclized to pyrazole derivatives 6a-f via the reaction with hydrazine hydrate and oxalic acid in the presence of the catalytic amount of acetic acid in ethanol. Materials and Methods: The structural features of the synthesized compounds were characterized by melting point, FT-IR, H-1, C-13 NMR and elemental analysis. Results: The antibacterial activities of the synthesized pyrazoles were evaluated against three gram-positive bacteria, such as Enterococcus durans, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and two gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. Conclusion: All the synthesized pyrazoles showed relatively high antibacterial activity against S. aureus strain, and none of them demonstrated antibacterial activity against E. coli.

This paper describes the synthesis of polyindole by chemical oxidative polymerization using copper chloride as oxidant. Polyindole was characterized by various spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, and TGA. The XRD pattern confirms the semi-crystalline nature of polyindole. An efficient, solvent-free, ultrasound-assisted synthesis of biologically active 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1 H)-one/thiones (DHPM) derivatives is reported by using polyindole as a recyclable catalyst. The advantages of this method are mild reaction conditions, short reaction time, excellent yields with high purity and low loading of catalyst. Polyindole can be used several times without loss of significant catalytic activity as compared to the other reported catalysts. Factors affecting on the rate of reaction, like use of ultrasonication, temperature, solvent, amount, and recyclability of catalyst have also been studied.

Benzothiazole-tethered pyranopyrazoles derivatives were prepared via environmentally favorable conditions, which included eco-friendly catalyst, ethanol-water solvent, one-pot reaction, and atom- and step-economy procedures. Excellent yield of the products was observed. Besides, all products were screened for their antimicrobial behavior. From the biological results, it was seen that most of the compounds possessed high to moderate antimicrobial properties. Compound 6a gave prominent antimicrobial property followed by 6d, 6l, and 6n. In addition, computer-aided studies of the active compounds were also conducted. In this, selected compounds were docked into the intercalation site of DNA of the DNA-gyrase complex. From these results, the highest binding energy of -10.1 kcal/mol was for 6a against DNA-gyrase. This is the first eco-friendly synthetic method for the preparation of benzothiazole-pyranopyrazoles and the synthetic effort in this study may serve as a model for additional environmentally benign reactions. The biological results may prompt further studies related to antibiotic drugs.

We investigated the photocatalytic performance of a magnetic nanohybrid of CoFe2O4 and TiO2 hetero-nanostructures (TiO2/CoFe2O4) conjugated with zinc tetrakis carboxyphenyl porphyrin (ZnTCPP) for controlled oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes under visible light. The photocatalyst was prepared by nucleating titania on pre-formed CoFe2O4 nanoparticles, generating anatase TiO2/CoFe2O4 hetero-nanostructures upon annealing at 450 degrees C. Then, they were conjugated with ZnTCPP resulting in ZnTCPP-TiO2/CoFe2O4 nanohybrid materials, which were characterized in detail by different structural and spectroscopic methods. The ZnTCPP-TiO2/CoFe2O4 nanostructures have an average size of 21 nm and show ferromagnetic behavior with a magnetization saturation of 47 emu g(-1), a remanence of 22 emu g(-1), and a coercivity of ca. 1000 Oe. The photocatalytic conversion of alcohols up to 87% under visible light was achieved by using this hybrid nanomaterial. Such a high catalytic performance can be related to the low charge recombination rate of the ZnTCPP-TiO2/CoFe2O4 nanostructures. The magnetic hybrid nanostructures reported in this work have excellent potential as visible light photocatalysts with advantages of high efficiency, selectivity, stability, and easy separation.

The transfer hydrogenation of flavanones and ortho-hydroxychalcones catalyzed by ruthenium pincer complexes RuCl(CNNPh)(disphosphine) has allowed the synthesis of ortho-hydroxy 1,3-diarypropanols in 80-88 % yield, under mild reaction conditions and short reaction times (1 h) in 2-propanol. The amount of the co-catalyst NaOiPr has been found crucial for the selective reduction of flavanones to ortho-hydroxy 1,3-diarypropanols vs. flavan-4-ols. Preliminary results show that with pincer catalysts bearing (S,R)-Josiphos, flavanone is reduced to the corresponding (S)-alcohol in moderate conversion (36 %) and up to 92 % ee.

To tackle leishmaniasis, search for efficient therapeutic drug targets should be pursued. Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) is considered as a key target for the treatment of leishmaniasis. In current study, we are interested in the design and synthesis of selective antifolates targeting DHFR from L. major. We focused on the development of new antifolates based on 3,4-dihydropyrimidine-2-one and 5-(3,5-dimethoxybenzyl)pyrimidine-2,4-diamine motif. Structure activity relationship (SAR) studies were performed on 4-phenyl ring of dihydropyrimidine (26-30) template. While for 5-(3,5-dimethoxybenzyl) pyrimidine-2,4-diamine, the impact of different amino acids (valine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, and glutamic acid) and two carbon linkers were explored (52-59). The synthesized compounds were assayed against LmDHFR. Compound 59 with the IC50 value of 0.10 mu M appeared as potent inhibitors of L. major. Selectivity for parasite DHFR over human DHFR was also determined. Derivatives 55-59 demonstrated excellent selectivity for LmDHFR. Highest selectivity for LmDHFR was shown by compounds 56 (SI = 84.5) and 58 (SI = 87.5). Compounds Antileishmanial activity against L. major and L. donovani promastigotes was also performed. To explore the interaction pattern of the synthesized compounds with biological macromolecules, the docking studies were carried out against homology modelled LmDHFR and hDHFR targets. Present investigation focused on to study the corrosion inhibition capabilities of pyrimidine derivatives; MPA [4,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl) pyrimidin-2-amine] and CPA [4,6-bis(4-chlorophenyl) pyrimidin-2-amine] for oil well/tubing steel (N80 steel) in 15 % HCl solution. Corrosion inhibition efficiency of both inhibitors increases on increasing the concentration and decreases on increasing the temperature. The studied organic compounds show excellent corrosion mitigation properties with highest efficiency of 99.5 % for MPA and 94.7 % for CPA at a considerably low dosage of 250 mu M L-1. Adsorption of both inhibitors obeyed Langmuir adsorption isotherm and nature of adsorption is mixed type adsorption. Potentiodynamic polarization studies showed that both the compounds adsorb at the cathodic and anodic sites of the substrate surface to mitigate corrosion process and both inhibitors act as mixed type corrosion inhibitor. The surface study uninhibited and inhibited sample was done through SEM, EDX, AFM, FT-IR and XPS analysis and suggested the formation of protective layer of inhibitor molecules on the N80 steel surface to mitigate its corrosion. The theoretical analysis (DFT and Monte Carlo simulations) of both inhibitors correlates the experimental findings.

Porous crystals with well-defined active metal centers on the pore surface have high potential as heterogeneous metal catalysts. We have recently demonstrated that a porous molecular crystal, metal-macrocycle framework (MMF), catalyzes olefin migration reactions by photoactivation of its (PdCl2)-Cl-II moieties exposed on the crystalline channel surface. Herein we report a mechanistic study of the photoinduced olefin migration reactions at the Pd-II active centers of MMF. Several experiments, including a deuterium scrambling study, revealed that olefin migration is catalyzed via an alkyl mechanism by in situ generated Pd-H species on the channel surface during photoirradiation. This proposed mechanism was further supported by DFT and ONIOM calculations.

We developed a facile and green one-pot synthetic method for substituted 1,3,5-triaryl-1,5-diketones by Claisen-Schmidt condensation following Michael addition reaction of aryl ketones and aryl aldehydes under a transition-metal-free condition. This convenient one-pot synthetic strategy has several advantages, including being transition-metal-free, having no extra additives or reagents, having a broad substrate scope, having a high isolated yield, having a minimum amount of base employment, having a shorter reaction time, use of cheap starting materials, cost-effectiveness, and being environment friendly. Some of the chemical structures of 1,5-diketones were confirmed by X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. The application of 1,5-diketones was demonstrated in the preparation of 2,4,6-triaryl pyridine derivatives under a catalyst-free system using ammonium acetate as a nitrogen source.
