This study focused on synthesis various dimethyl N-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylate and (N-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4,5-diyl)dimethanol derivatives under the conditions of green chemistry without the use of solvent and catalysts. Their inhibition properties were also investigated on xanthine oxidase (XO) activity. All dimethanol and dicarboxylate derivatives exhibited significant inhibition activities with IC50 values ranging from 0.71 to 2.25 mu M. Especially, (1-(3-bromobenzyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4,5-diyl)dimethanol (5c) and dimethyl 1-(4-chlorobenzyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylate (6 g) compounds were found to be the most promising derivatives on the XO enzyme inhibition with IC50 values 0.71 and 0.73 mu M, respectively. Moreover, the double docking procedure was to evaluate compound modes of inhibition and their interactions with the protein (XO) at atomic level. Surprisingly, the docking results showed a good correlation with IC50 [correlation coefficient (R-2 = 0.7455)]. Also, the docking results exhibited that the 5c, 6f and 6 g have lowest docking scores -4.790,-4.755, and -4.730, respectively. These data were in agreement with the IC50 values. These results give promising beginning stages to assist in the improvement of novel and powerful inhibitor against XO.

This work aims to explore the differences in phytochemical composition and biological properties of five strawberry hybrids (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.), and highlights the non-edible part (byproduct) as a source of self-remedy natural herb along with fruits. HPLC/DAD/HRESIMS technique was used in the dereplication of ten ethanolic extracts of five strawberry cultivars leaves and fruits (Festival, Red Merlin, Suzana, Tamar and Winter Dawn). Total phenolic and total flavonoid contents were established using Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride colorimetric assays, respectively. Ethanolic extracts of leaves and fruits from Festival and Red Merlin cultivars were selected to investigate their anti-hyperglycemic activity using streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Oxidative stress markers, lipid profile and kidney and liver function tests were assessed. The results revealed different chemical profiles of ten samples with the identification of 37 metabolites, represented mainly as flavonoids and phenolic acid derivatives. Phytochemical investigation resulted in the isolation of seven known phenolic compounds; quercetin, kaempferol, p-coumaric acid, p-tyrosol, methyl gallate, trans-tiliroside and eutigoside A. Suzana cultivar was the richest cultivar with flavonoids and total phenolics except for the total flavonoid content in leaves referred to Festival cultivar. Ethanolic extract of leaves, especially Festival cultivar was the most bioactive one. The results established the role of strawberry leaves along with fruits as an antioxidant and hypoglycemic natural remedy.

Essential oils and ethanolic extracts of seeds of seven organically and conventionally grown accessions (E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, and E7) of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) were examined for their chemical constituents, antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Accession E7 presented the highest essential oil yields of 4.30 +/- 0.45 and 3.24 +/- 0.46%, respectively, for organic and conventional mode. However, E6 noted the lowest ethanolic extract yield in the two modes of cultivation. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis of the essential oils revealed the presence of nine essential components in all plant materials. (E)-anethole, methyl-chavicol, fenchone, and limonene were highly abundant. A considerable antioxidant effect was shown for all accessions and a significant difference (p < .05) was reported in the mode of cultivation of essential oils and ethanolic extracts. Concerning antibacterial activity, the essential oils showed generally higher antibacterial activity on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria than ethanolic extracts for organic and conventional fennel seeds. Practical applications Foeniculum vulgare is an aromatic plant widely used nowadays as flavoring as well as food preservative in foods, such as ice cream, meat, and fish dishes. In this context, the chemical composition and biological activities of essential oil and ethanolic extract from fennel seeds cultivated in organic and conventional modes were studied. Fennel seeds extracts presented a richness in polyphenols and flavonoids. In addition, they showed considerable antioxidant activity, while essential oils had a higher antibacterial activity. Essential oils extracted from herbs have been utilized in food and medicine on the account of their increasing physicochemical characteristics. This present study aimed to investigate the phytochemical components, antiinflammatory, cytotoxic, anti-microbial and anti-oxidant activities of essential oils from Pogostemon cablin (P. cablin), Angelica dahurica (A. dahurica) and Myristica fragrans (M. fragrans), all belong to medicine food homology herbs. Approximately 107 components were identified by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) from these essential oils. The main compounds of P. cablin essential oils (PCEOs) were patchouli alcohol (27.72%), alpha-buaiacene (17.94%) and alpha-guaiene (14.15%); in A. dahurica essential oils (ADEOs) were anethole (24.91%) and cinnamaldehyde (18.35%); and in M. fragrans essential oils (MFEOs) were (1S)-(-)-alpha-pinene (23.39%), alpha-terpineol (18.60%) and caryophyllene (10.34%). These essential oils were found to have strong antiinflammatory activities through decreasing the production of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), nuclear factor-kappa B p65 (P65) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). These essential oils also had significant anti-bacterial activities against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive strains and anti-fungal activities. Moreover, effective anti-oxidant properties of three essential oils were estimated (0.001962%-0.19%). The study also explored the effect of these essential oils on the survival of Brain microglia (BV2) microglial cells (IC50 = 145.50-281.52 mu g/mL). Ozonolysis is an oxidative cleavage reaction of alkenes with ozone that is indispensable and has found many applications in organic synthesis. However, dedicated laboratory ozone generators are quite expensive equipment and may not be affordable by many laboratories. Recently, low-cost ozone disinfectors have become more common as a household appliance. Herein, we demonstrate the applicability of a household ozone disinfector, which can produce ozone in the order of 10 mmol/h, as alternative equipment for the laboratory scale ozonolysis of alkenes. The ozonolysis of 14 styrene derivatives bearing electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups on aromatic rings including those with alpha- and beta-substituents, as well as 8 natural products containing olefinic moieties were investigated. Ozonolysis of these alkenes at millimole scales proceeded to completion within 30-40 minutes and the carbonyl products were obtained in 68% to quantitative yields. Preparative-scale ozonolysis of 4-methoxystyrene (6.17 g, 46 mmol) was also demonstrated. The reaction proceeded smoothly to yield 4-anisaldehyde in 92% yield, which was subsequently converted to p-anisaldehyde dimethyl acetal in 66% yield. This work presents household ozone disinfector as an affordable, compact size, and practical synthetic equipment that does not require extra modification. Thus, the household ozone disinfector offers convenient access to ozonolysis or other reactions involving ozone for low-budget laboratories.
