The development of robust electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of guaiacol and related lignin model monomers is necessary for the stabilization or upgrading of bio-oil. Additionally, the efficiency of biomass conversion to bio-oil products remains below the minimum requirements for its implementation at scale. Herein, a PtNiB/CMK-3 catalyst with pronounced ECH performance in the conversion of guaiacol and related model lignin monomers to bio-oil under optimally mild conditions, through a modulation strategy that modified the electronic structure of PtNi via boron alloying, is prepared. Notably, the optimized PtNiB/CMK-3 exhibited an inspiring high faradaic efficiency of 86.2%, which is significantly higher (13.7 times) than that of the PtNi/CMK-3 without B-doping (6.3%). Experimental results and theoretical calculations showed that the B-doping optimized the PtNiB alloy surface electron structure, simultaneously promoting substrate and intermediate adsorption and the ECH process. In addition, the uniform dispersion of PtNiB nanoparticles embedded within the mesoporous channels of CMK-3 ensures an enhanced utilization efficiency, leading to improvements in stability and bio-oil product generation. The lab-scale ECH experiment of guaiacol also certified the scale-up potential. This work opens a promising avenue to the rational design of advanced and highly efficient electrocatalysts for biomass upgrading.

A highly chemo- and stereoselective addition of unprotected phenols to haloalkynes was developed. A ligand and counterion controlled process enabled the highly site-selective and chemoselective C-H bond functionalization of phenol derivatives with haloalkynes in moderate to excellent yield at room temperature. The simple availability of the starting materials in combination with the preferred para-C-H functionalization over a competing O-H insertion makes this an attractive protocol. The stereoselectivity of the products depends on the choice of the catalyst. From a synthetic prospective, this method offers an efficient route towards vinyl chlorides, which are valuable precursors for the synthesis of pharmaceutical drugs.

A metal-free and base-free Cl3CCN mediated method was developed for the ipso-hydroxylation of aryl boronic acids to their corresponding phenols, which was promoted by a key unstable Lewis adduct intermediate. A novel chiral nucleophilic organocatalyst easily synthesized from simple starting materials bearing a 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine skeleton has been developed and successfully applied in the direct enantioselective C-acylation of 3-substituted benzofuranones. A novel series of bicyclic fluorescent heterocalixarenes – C-alkyl coumarin[4]arenes – with built-in chirality has been synthesized successfully in excellent yields under well-optimized, improved reaction conditions. Further, structural elaboration (including pi-extension) of coumarin[4]arenes has been demonstrated by using Pd-catalyzed Suzuki and Sonogashira cross-coupling methods. All of these macrocycles are shown to possess averaged C-4-symmetric conformation in solution as opposed to the coumarin[4]arene tetratriflate derivative of C-2 symmetry in the solid state. Finally, the macrocyclic coumarin[4]arenes reveal UV/near-UV absorption and visible blue emission in solution. Such a visible blue luminescence of this macrocycle highlights its potential for sensing, bioimaging, and light-emissive applications.

A highly efficient and regioselective bromination of electron-rich arenes and heteroarenes using commercially available BrCCl3 as a Br source has been developed. The reaction was performed in air under mild conditions with photocatalyst Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 center dot 6H(2)O, avoiding the usage of strong acids and strong oxidants. Mono-brominated products were obtained with medium to excellent yields (up to 94%). This strategy has shown good compatibility and high para-selectivity, which will facilitate the complicated synthesis.

Compared to previous transition metal-catalyzed C-phosphorylation reactions for constructing C-P bonds, in the absence of transition metal catalysts and ligands, a direct O-phosphorylation of aryl triflates selectively occurred with P(O)-H compounds in the presence of a base via the construction of O-P bonds. Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) causes a rapid increase of CD4+T cells counts during the first 3-6 months of treatment and may enhance the development of opportunistic infections (OIs). However, the short- and long-term effects of HAART exposure on the development of incident OIs has not been extensively studied. This nationwide longitudinal study followed up a total of 26,258 people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) to ascertain the short- and long-term effects of HAART on incident OIs. During 150,196 person-years of follow-up, 6,413 (24.4%) PLWHA had new onset of OIs. After adjusting for demographics, comorbidities, and AIDS status, PLWHA who received HAART were more likely to develop OIs than those who did not receive HAART. Considering the short- and long-term effects of HAART on the development of OIs, HAART was found to be a risk factor for developing OIs during the first 90 days of treatment, but a protective factor against OIs after 180 days of HAART use. The risk for the development of active OIs significantly decreased as the duration of HAART increased (P < 0.001). Our study suggests that HAART is a risk factor for developing OIs in the short term, but is a protective factor in the long term.
