Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-electrophile C(sp(2))-(sp(3)) coupling and C-H alkylation reactions represent two efficient methods for the incorporation of an alkyl group into aromatic rings. Herein, we report a Pd-catalyzed cascade cross-electrophile coupling and C-H alkylation reaction of 2-iodo-alkoxylarenes with alkyl chlorides. Methoxy and benzyloxy groups, which are ubiquitous functional groups and common protecting groups, were utilized as crucial mediators via primary or secondary C(sp(3))-H activation. The reaction provides an innovative and convenient access for the synthesis of alkylated phenol derivatives, which are widely found in bioactive compounds and organic functional materials.

Predicting the acute toxicity of a large dataset of diverse chemicals against fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) is challenging. In this paper, 963 organic compounds with acute toxicity towards fathead minnows were split into a training set (482 compounds) and a test set (481 compounds) with an approximate ratio of 1 : 1. Only six molecular descriptors were used to establish the quantitative structure-activity/toxicity relationship (QSAR/QSTR) model for 96 hourpLC(50)through a support vector machine (SVM) along with genetic algorithm. The optimal SVM model (R-2= 0.756) was verified using both internal (leave-one-out cross-validation) and external validations. The validation results (q(int)(2)= 0.699 andq(ext)(2)= 0.744) were satisfactory in predicting acute toxicity in fathead minnows compared with other models reported in the literature, although our SVM model has only six molecular descriptors and a large data set for the test set consisting of 481 compounds.

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconducting inorganic nanoparticles, tiny molecules of 2-10 nm sizes to strength the quantum confinements of electrons. The QDs are good enough to emit light onto electrons for exciting and returning to the ground state. Here, CdSe/ZnS core/shell QDs have been prepared and applied for electrochemical sensor development in this approach. Flat glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was coated with CdSe/ZnS QDs as very thin uniform layer to result of the selective and efficient sensor of 3-CP (3-chlorophenol). The significant analytical parameters were calculated from the calibration plot such as sensitivity (3.6392 mu A mu M-1 cm(-2)) and detection limit (26.09 +/- 1.30 pM) with CdSe/ZnS/GCE sensor probe by electrochemical approach. The calibration curve was fitted with the regression co-efficient r(2) = 0.9906 in the range of 0.1 nM similar to 0.1 mM concentration, which denoted as linear dynamic range (LDR). Besides these, it was performed the reproducibility in short response time and successfully validated the fabricated sensor for 3-CP in the real environmental and extracted samples. It is introduced as a noble route to detect the environmental phenolic contaminants using CdSe/ZnS QDs modified sensor by electrochemical method for the safety of healthcare and environmental fields at broad scales.

We report herein the synthesis of a polymeric photosensitizer and its application in aerobic photooxidative hydroxylation of boronic acids. The polymeric photosensitizer was synthesized by the condensation of anthraquinone-2-carbonyl chloride (AQ-2-COCl) with poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA). The photo-oxidative hydroxylation of boronic acids using anthraquinone-containing-poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (AQ-PHEMA) was then explored and shown to exhibit high efficiency and broad scope. Moreover, AQ-PHEMA could be easily recovered and reused for more than 20 times without significant loss of the catalytic activity.

The methoxy-, hydroxy-, and carbonyl-substituted benzenes are the simplest fragments from the lignin separation feedstocks. Extensive experimental thermochemical studies of these compounds were carried out, including combustion calorimetry, vapor pressure measurements, and differential scanning calorimetry. We have collected available primary experimental results on enthalpies of formation and vapor pressures as well as on phase transitions, liquid-gas, liquid-solid, and crystal-liquid. These data were evaluated using empirical, semiempirical, and quantum chemical methods. The consistent sets of evaluated thermodynamic data were used to design the method for predicting enthalpies of vaporization and enthalpies of formation of di- and trisubstituted benzenes. It is expected that parameters and pairwise interactions will be transferable to predict the thermochemical properties of poly methoxy-substituted and poly hydroxysubstituted benzenes that appear in reaction products of lignin transformations in the value-adding chemicals and materials.

OPAHs and SPAHs are highly genotoxic and would largely be formed during the thermal conversion of lignin. Herein, the distribution of OPAHs and SPAHs in lignin pyrolytic tar at different temperatures is elaborated with ESI (-) FT-ICR MS and GC-MS, and the formation routes of two typical OPAH and SPAH are deeply explored via DFT. It is found that most of oxygen-containing compounds convert to phenols and their homologues such as guaiacol (a typical precursor of OPAHs) with the temperature increased. The tar prepared at high temperature contains disulfide, thiophene and thiophene homologues, which are typical precursors of SPAHs. FT-ICR-MS strongly suggests that molecular mass of OPAHs and SPAHs compounds mainly concentrates between 200 Da and 400 Da with carbon atom number from 5 to 25 and DBE from 4 to 15. Higher temperature significantly promotes deoxygenation reaction since weighted average carbon atom number and DBE of molecules increase 28.4 % and 12.9 %, while the corresponding weighted average oxygen atom number decreases from 7.21 to 5.96 with temperature rising from 500 degrees C to 900 degrees C. Incorporating with DFT calculation, the pathways of OPAHs and SPAHs during lignin pyrolysis at high temperature are concluded: Guaiacol converts to 1-methoxynaphthalene via 4 methylation reactions, and butene firstly generates thiophene and then converts to methyl-benzothiophene. Among the reactions above, benzene ring and thiophene ring generation steps possess the highest energy barriers (436.74 kJ/mol and 446.33 kJ/mol), further illustrating higher temperature promotes the formation of OPAHs and SPAHs.

This research demonstrated the development of graphene oxide (GO)-gold nanocrystals (AuNCs) compositemodified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the sensitive detection of dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA), and 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The GO was synthesized by modified Hummer’s method, which was utilized to prepare GO-AuNCs composites by in situ synthesis method using sodium L(-) malate as a reducing agent. Morphological, X-ray diffraction, and spectral analysis revealed the homogeneous formation of AuNCs with high crystallinity and purity on the GO surface and the sizes of the NCs were decreased with increasing the concentrations of sodium L (-) malate. The optimal GCE/GO-AuNCs sensor exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of DA, UA, and 4-AP. The sensor showed interference-free and selective detection of DA and UA with sensitivities of ca. 30.3 and 17.28 mu A/cm(2)/mu M, respectively, and detection limits of ca. 28 and 50 nM, respectively, with wider dynamic ranges, measured by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique. Whereas, it displayed a sensitivity and detection limit of ca. 5.70 mu A/cm(2)/mu M and 0.017 nM, respectively, for the detection of 4-AP, using current density (J)-voltage (V) measurement method.
