A novel chiral nucleophilic organocatalyst easily synthesized from simple starting materials bearing a 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine skeleton has been developed and successfully applied in the direct enantioselective C-acylation of 3-substituted benzofuranones. Its catalytic efficiency was shown to be comparable to that of the previously reported chiral 6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]imidazole catalyst. A wide range of 3,3-disubstituted benzofuranones, possessing a quaternary stereocenter, were synthesized with high yields and enantioselectivities.

An efficient and convenient rhodium(III)-catalyzed chelation-assisted ortho-selective carbon-hydrogen bond alkylation of phenols treated with readily available diazocarbonyl compounds as the alkyl source has been described. Migratory carbene insertion represents the principal step to realize this carbenoid coupling transformation, giving rise to a broad rang of alkylated products and at the same time, releasing nitrogen gas as sole byproduct. As singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) is ubiquitous in the environment, O-1(2)-involved oxidation may play an important role in the transformation and fate of organic pollutants. Accordingly, the reaction rate constants (k(1O2)) of organic compounds with O-1(2) are important to determine the environmental fate and persistence assessment of organic pollutants. However, currently there are limited k(1O2) data available, especially for organic chemicals with different charged (deprotonated/protonated) forms. Herein three quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models (one comprehensive model and two models for neutral and deprotonated molecules) were created for predicting aqueous k(1O2) values for diversely dissociating molecules. The models include larger datasets (180 chemicals) and have wider applicability domain than previous ones. Molecular structural characteristics (only half-wave potential is present in both models) determining the O-1(2) reaction rate of neutral and deprotonated molecules vary greatly. The comparison results of predicting k(1O2) values of organic compounds at certain pH conditions show that the combination of the QSAR models for neutral and deprotonated molecules has advantages over the comprehensive QSAR model. This work is the first study to predict k(1O2) for a wide variety of neutral and deprotonated molecules and provides an important tool for assessing the fate of organic pollutants in aquatic environments.

Starting from diverse alkene-tethered aryl iodides and O-benzoyl-hydroxylamines, the enantioselective reductive cross-electrophilic 1,2-carboamination of unactivated alkenes was achieved using a chiral pyrox/nickel complex as the catalyst. The fluoroalkylation of various nucleophilic reagents with (phenylsulfonyl)difluoromethyl (PhSO2CF2)-substituted phenanthridines was achieved to give fluorinated phenanthridine derivatives, which enables the construction of both carbon-heteroatom and carbon-carbon bonds via the substitution of the phenylsulfonyl group. Mechanistic studies indicated that these reactions proceed through a unimolecular radical nucleophilic substitution (S(RN)1) mechanism. It is worthwhile noting that in the cases of O-nucleophiles (t-BuO- and PhO-), the addition of t-BuOK/PhCHO could significantly promote the reactions, due to the in situ formation of a highly reactive electron donor species through the interaction of t-BuOK, PhCHO, and the solvent DMF, which can effectively initiate the single electron transfer process.

In the treatment of wastewaters contaminated with phenol and substituted phenols, an intermediate chemical step of partial oxidation is often employed to facilitate the ensuing biodegradation process. Ozonation is a candidate technique for partial oxidation of phenolics. In this study, the kinetics of ozonation reactions of 20 substituted phenols is investigated using the renowned theory of mass transfer with chemical reaction. The stirred (Lewis) cell with a flat interface is used as a model contactor. It is found that the second-order rate constants for the reactions with the chosen phenolic compounds are in the 10(4)-10(7) s(-1) range. In particular, the rate constant for ozonation of phenol is 5.06 x 10(6) M-1 s(-1). The liquid-side mass transfer coefficient is estimated by using the chemical method, and its value (k(L) = 0.052 cm s(-1)) is in line with those typical of stirred-cell reactors. This work is useful for the design, operation, and scale-up of ozonation reactors used in wastewater treatment.
