The palladium-catalyzed benzylic-like nucleophilic substitution of benzofuran-2-ylmethyl acetate with N, S, O and C soft nucleophiles has been investigated. The success of the reaction is dramatically influenced by the choice of catalytic system: with nitrogen based nucleophiles the reaction works well with Pd-2(dba)(3)/dppf, while with sulfur, oxygen and carbo-nucleophiles [Pd(eta(3)-C3H5)Cl](2)/XPhos is more efficient. The regiochemical outcome shows that the nucleophilic substitution occurs only on the benzylic position of the eta(3)-(benzofuryl)methyl complex. The high to excellent yields and the simplicity of the experimental procedure make this protocol a versatile synthetic tool for the preparation of 2-substituted benzo[b]furans.

Polysulfide anions are endowed with unique redox properties, attracting considerable attentions for their applications in alkali metals-sulfur batteries. However, the employment of these anionic species in redox catalysis for small molecule synthesis remains underdeveloped due to their moderate-poor electrochemical potential in the ground state, whereas some of them are characterized by photoabsorptions in visible spectral regions. Herein, we disclose the use of polysulfide anions as visible light photoredox catalysts for aryl cross-coupling reactions. The reaction design enables single-electron reduction of aryl halides upon the photoexcitation of tetrasulfide dianions (S-4(2-)). The resulting aryl radicals are engaged in (hetero)-biaryl cross-coupling, borylation, and hydrogenation in a redox catalytic regime involving S-4(center dot-) and S-4(2-)/S-3(center dot-)/S-3(2-) redox couples.

Nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) reactions can provide metal-free access to synthesize monosubstituted aromatic compounds. We developed efficient SNAr conditions for p-selective substitution of polyfluoroarenes with phenothiazine in the presence of a mild base to afford the corresponding 10-phenylphenothiazine (PTH) derivatives. The resulting polyfluoroarene-bearing PTH derivatives were subjected to a second SNAr reaction to generate highly functionalized PTH derivatives with potential applicability as photocatalysts for the reduction of carbon-halogen bonds.

Wheat bran, which contains a large amount of cellulose, is used as a raw material to produce soy sauce, but it is hard to degrade during fermentation. Steam explosion (SE) is efficient in hydrolyzing the cellulose for enhancing enzymatic digestion and solvent accessibility. In this study, we applied a SE at a sufficiently high pressure to damage the integrity of the wheat bran structure and modify it to assume a layered form. We found that cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin structures were collapsed by SE pretreatment, which was indicated by their changes in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The amounts of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin decreased by 5.8%, 21.4%, and 43.4%, respectively, under 1.5 MPa, resulting in the significant reduction of sugar and amino acid nitrogen. The co-reaction of nonenzymatic browning after SE pretreatment resulted in an intense increase in flavor (overall feeling), as determined by electronic nose analysis and sensory evaluation. In conclusion, SE pretreatment under 1.0 MPa was proven to be the most optimal state for the production of aroma compounds (volatile compounds), which are essential for soy sauce production.

An efficient method for the dehydrogenative coupling of silanes with alcohols under photocatalysis was developed. The reaction proceeded in the presence of Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 (0.5 mol%) under visible light irradiation in acetonitrile at room temperature. The porous bioceramic scaffolds require favorable mechanical properties and excellent bioactivity to promote bone repair. In this work, 45S5 bioglass (R) & biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) bioceramic scaffolds with a diamond lattice structure (porosity of 70%) were manufactured accurately by digital light processing (DLP). After optimizing the solid loading of bioceramic suspension to 40 vol%, scaffolds with the minimum pore size of 400 mu m were fabricated successfully under exposure energy of 12.54 mJ/cm(2). In the initial stage of sintering, crystallization occurred during 45S5 bioglass (R) itself, bioglass also promoted hydroxyapatite (HA) decomposition to tricalcium phosphate (TCP). With extending holding time to 4 h, Si4+ from 45S5 bioglass (R) diffused into TCP to produce Ca-5(PO4)(2)SiO4, which could enhance the compressive strength of bioceramic scaffolds. Meanwhile, bioglass would assist the growth and roughening of ceramic grains because of the ion-diffusion from bioglass to BCP. However, as holding time extended to 6 h, abnormal grain growth and cracks occurred which would decrease compressive strength. The best value of compressive strength is 1.735 MPa at the holding time of 4 h. 45S5 bioglass (R) also accelerated ion exchange such as Si4+ and CO32- between bioceramic and SBF solution. This kind of bioceramics may be used as bioactive scaffolds with customizable fine structures and provide potential applications in bone tissue engineering.

Encouraged by our earlier discovery of N1-selective inhibitors, the 150-cavity of influenza virus neuraminidases (NAs) could be further exploited to yield more potent oseltamivir derivatives. Herein, we report the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of a series of novel oseltamivir derivatives via the structural modifications at C-5-NH2 of oseltamivir targeting 150-cavity. Among them, compound 5c bearing 4-(3-methoxybenzyloxy)benzyl group exhibited the most potent activity, which was lower or modestly improved activities than oseltamivir carboxylate (OSC) against N1 (H1N1), N1 (H5N1) and N1 (H5N1-H274Y). Specifically, there was 30-fold loss of activity against the wild-type strain H1N1. However, 5c displayed 4.85-fold more potent activity than OSC against H5N1-H274Y NA. Also, 5c demonstrated low cytotoxicity in vitro and no acute toxicity in mice. Molecular docking studies provided insights into the high potency of 5c against N1 and N1-H274Y mutant NAs. Besides, the in silico prediction of physicochemical properties and CYP enzymatic inhibitory ability of representative compounds were conducted to evaluate their drug-like properties. We have developed a one-pot, three-component, and solvent-free reaction for the synthesis of 3-aminofurans using a calcium catalyst. In this cascade reaction, the key intermediate, C,N-diacyliminium ion, is formed in situ from glyoxal and lactam, which further reacted with phenolic nucleophiles to form furan derivatives in good yields with broad substrate diversity. Sugarcane (SC) is a perennial grass widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. However, its cultivation in Europe is residual, where Madeira Island, Portugal, is the only region where SC continues to be extensively cultivated. For the first time, the volatile profiles of regional cultivars were established by solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Different volatile profiles for each cultivar were recognized, identifying 260 volatile organic compounds belonging to 15 chemical classes, such as aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, hydrocarbons, esters, and terpenes. Chemometric analysis procedure, namely, one-way ANOVA with Tukey’s test, principal component analysis, partial least-square analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and hierarchical clustering analysis, allowed the differentiation between all regional cultivars. This study represents an important contribution for the maintenance of biodiversity and subsistence of the SC industry in Europe. Furthermore, it is also a valuable contribution to establish the typicality of traditional SC-based products, such as SC honey.
