A multiblock copolymer with increased charge density in the hydrophilic phase was synthesized by utilizing a trisulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) backbone (SHQS100). To achieve a balance of membrane properties a partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether benzonitrile) hydrophobic phase (6FPAEB) was used in uneven block lengths to form the hydrophilic-hydrophobic multiblock copolymer. Multiblock copolymers were synthesized via nucleophilic aromatic substitution to achieve high molecular weight copolymers and corresponding ductile membranes. Combination of the shorter increased charge density hydrophilic phase and longer partially fluorinated hydrophobic phase resulted in superior proton conductivity and mechanical properties while limiting water uptake and swelling, despite high ion-exchange capacity. The trifunctional SHQSH hydrophilic phase is proposed to produce a more concentrated charge region in the hydrophilic phase, while swelling of the membrane was limited by a longer partially fluorinated hydrophobic phase.

Carboxylesterase (CES) plays an important role in the hydrolysis metabolism of ester-type drugs and prodrugs. In this study, we investigated the change in the hydrolysis rate of hCE1 by focusing on the steric hindrance of the ester structure and the electron density. For 26 kinds of synthesized indomethacin prodrugs, the hydrolytic rate was measured in the presence of human liver microsomes (HLM), human small intestine microsomes (HIM), hCE1 and hCE2. The synthesized prodrugs were classified into three types: an alkyl ester type that is specifically metabolized by hCE1, a phenyl ester type that is more easily metabolized by hCE1 than by hCE2, and a carbonate ester type that is easily metabolized by both hCE1 and hCE2. The hydrolytic rate of 1-methylpentyl (hexan-2-yl) ester was 10-times lower than that of 4-methylpentyl ester in hCE1 solution. hCE2 was susceptible to electron density of the substrate, and there was a difference in the hydrolysis rate of up to 3.5-times between p-bromophenyl ester and p-acetylphenyl ester. By changing the steric hindrance and electron density of the alkoxy group, the factors that change the hydrolysis rate by CES were elucidated. Constructing polymeric materials with stretchable and self-healing properties arise increasing interest in the field of tissue engineering, wearable electronics and soft actuators. Herein, a new type of supramolecular cross-linker was constructed through host-guest interaction between pillar[5]arene functionalized acrylate and pyridinium functionalized acrylate, which could form supramolecular polymeric material via photo-polymerization of n-butyl acrylate (BA). Such material exhibited excellent tensile properties, with maximum tensile strength of 3.4 MPa and strain of 3000%, respectively. Moreover, this material can effectively dissipate energy with the energy absorption efficiency of 93%, which could be applied in the field of energy absorbing materials. In addition, the material showed self-healing property after cut and responded to competitive guest.

Catalytic transformation of alcohols via metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions is very important, but it typically relies on a multistep procedure. We here report a dynamic kinetic cross-coupling approach for the direct functionalization of alcohols. The feasibility of this strategy is demonstrated by a nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile arylation reaction of benzyl alcohols with (hetero)aryl electrophiles. The reaction proceeds with a broad substrate scope of both coupling partners. The electron-rich, electron-poor, and ortho-/meta-/para-substituted (hetero)aryl electrophiles (e.g., Ar-OTf, Ar-I, Ar-Br, and inert Ar-Cl) all coupled well. Most of the functionalities, including aldehyde, ketone, amide, ester, nitrile, sulfone, furan, thiophene, benzothiophene, pyridine, quinolone, Ar-SiMe3, Ar-Bpin, and Ar-SnBu3, were tolerated. The dynamic nature of this method enables the direct arylation of benzylic alcohol in the presence of various nucleophilic groups, including nonactivated primary/secondary/tertiary alcohols, phenols, and free indoles. It thus offers a robust alternative to existing methods for the precise construction of diarylmethanes. The synthetic utility of the method was demonstrated by a concise synthesis of biologically active molecules and by its application to peptide modification and conjugation. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction of in situ formed benzyl oxalates with nickel, possibly via a radical process, is an initial step in the reaction with aryl electrophiles.

In this work, the hexagonal nanosheets assembled by N-doped C (N-C)-coated N-doped In2O3 (N-In2O3) nanoparticles (N-C/N-In2O3 HS) was obtained by simply pyrolyzing the In(2,5-PDC) hexagonal sheets. The N-C/N-In2O3 HS catalyst exhibit good photocatalytic activity and cycle stability in the long-wavelength region of visible light (lambda = 520 and 595 nm). The effective utilization of long-wavelength visible light for N-C/N-In2O3 HS was mainly attributed to the acceptor-donor-acceptor compensation mechanism between the oxygen vacancy (V-O) and substitutional N-doping (N-s) sites, which made the N-C/N-In2O3 HS possess a continuous band structure, without the half-filled or isolated impurity state in the band gap, and extended its light absorption edge to 733 nm. The compensation mechanism of nitrogen doping on In2O3 can promote the photocatalytic activity under longer-wavelength yellow light (595 nm) irradiation. The N-C layer coated on the N-In2O3 nanoparticles acted as a good acceptor of photogenerated electrons, facilitating the effective spatial separation of photogenerated carriers and extend photogenerated carrier lifetimes. The comparative photocatalytic experiments (N-In2O3 HS and N-C/N-In2O3 HS) show that the presence of N-doped C layer can enhance the photocatalytic efficiency by nearly 10-fold. This double-doping and carbon-coating strategy provided a novel research idea to solve the problem that nonmetal atoms doped metal oxides led to the secondary combination of photogenerated electrons/holes.

In this work, a series of new 8-[(substituted 2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yOmethyl]-8-azaspiro[4.5]decane-7,9-dione derivatives (1a – 1l) is synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, FT-IR, GC-MS and elemental analysis. In addition, the structure of compound 1k has been elucidated using single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The synthesized compounds are screened for their anticancer and anti-TB activity. Preliminary anticancer results showed that compounds (1a- 1l) exhibit moderate to potent activity against MDA-MB-231, A549, HT-29 and Hela cancer cell lines. Compound if exhibited the most potent activity against MDA-MB-231cell line with IC50 value of 9.05 mu M concentration, compound lg and 1h showed potent activity against A549 cell line with IC50 value of 7.05 and 13.31 mu M concentration respectively. Compound 1j showed good cytotoxicity against Hela cell line with IC50 of 16.14 mu M, whereas, compound 1l is found to be moderately active against HT-29 cell line with IC50 of 18.07 mu M. Anti-tubercular activity revealed that compound 1c, 1d, 1g, 1h and 1j have significant activity against MTBH(37)Rv strain with MIC 0.78, 1.56, 0.19, 0.39 and 0.78 mu g/mL respectively.
