In our continuing efforts to develop therapeutically active coumarin-based compounds, a series of new C4-C4 ‘ biscoumarin-pyrimidine conjugates (1a-l) was synthesizedviaS(N)2 reaction of substituted 4-bromomethyl coumarin with thymine. All compounds were characterized using spectroscopic techniques, that is, attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR), CHN elemental analysis, and(1)H and(13)C NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance). In addition, the structure of compound1d(1,3-bis[(7-chloro-2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl)methyl]-5-methylpyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione) was established through X-ray crystallography. Compounds1a-lwere screened for in vitro anticancer activity against C6 rat glioma cells. Among the screened compounds, 1,3-bis[(6-chloro-2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl)methyl]-5-methylpyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione (1c) was identified as the best antiproliferative candidate, exhibiting an IC(50)value of 4.85 mu M. All the compounds (1a-l) were found to be nontoxic toward healthy human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293), indicating their selective nature. In addition, the most active compound (1c) displayed strong binding interactions with the drug carrier protein, human serum albumin, and exhibited good solution stability at biological pH conditions. Fluorescence, UV-visible spectrophotometry and molecular modeling methodologies were employed for studying the interaction mechanism of compound1cwith protein.

Main observation and conclusion High CO pressure (> 40 bar) is usually needed in radical carbonylation reactions in the absence of metal catalyst. In this communication, we developed a transition-metal-free radical carbonylation of activated alkylamines with phenols and alcohols under low CO pressure (1-6 bar). Hydrothermal treatment of gadolinium nitrate and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) afforded a new metal-organic framework compound, {[Gd-4(NDC)(6)(H2O)(6)]center dot 2H(2)O}n(1). Compound 1 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, therrmogravimetric analysis (TGA) and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. It is crystallized in the monoclinic system with the P2(1)/n space group. Four crystallographically distinct Gd (III) centres are interconnected with each other through bridged carboxylato oxygen atoms and water molecules to form tetranuclear secondary building units, which are further connected through the carboxylato ligand and the network propagates along the crystallographic ac plane to form a 2D structure. Subsequent reinforcement from the remaining carboxylato oxygen atoms gives rise to a robust 3D framework structure. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrates that compound 1 is fairly stable after dehydration under a nitrogen atmosphere. Notably, compound 1 is capable of catalyzing the O-arylation reaction efficiently between substituted phenols and bromoarene under heterogeneous conditions at 80 degrees C to afford unsymmetrical diarylethers. The palladium-catalyzed benzylic-like nucleophilic substitution of benzofuran-2-ylmethyl acetate with N, S, O and C soft nucleophiles has been investigated. The success of the reaction is dramatically influenced by the choice of catalytic system: with nitrogen based nucleophiles the reaction works well with Pd-2(dba)(3)/dppf, while with sulfur, oxygen and carbo-nucleophiles [Pd(eta(3)-C3H5)Cl](2)/XPhos is more efficient. The regiochemical outcome shows that the nucleophilic substitution occurs only on the benzylic position of the eta(3)-(benzofuryl)methyl complex. Polysulfide anions are endowed with unique redox properties, attracting considerable attentions for their applications in alkali metals-sulfur batteries. However, the employment of these anionic species in redox catalysis for small molecule synthesis remains underdeveloped due to their moderate-poor electrochemical potential in the ground state, whereas some of them are characterized by photoabsorptions in visible spectral regions. Herein, we disclose the use of polysulfide anions as visible light photoredox catalysts for aryl cross-coupling reactions. The reaction design enables single-electron reduction of aryl halides upon the photoexcitation of tetrasulfide dianions (S-4(2-)). The resulting aryl radicals are engaged in (hetero)-biaryl cross-coupling, borylation, and hydrogenation in a redox catalytic regime involving S-4(center dot-) and S-4(2-)/S-3(center dot-)/S-3(2-) redox couples.

Quantum chemical calculations with the M06-2X method were performed to uncover the ozonolysis mechanism of guaiacol and several hydroxylated, methoxylated, and methylated phenols to improve the understanding of the ozone-induced attenuation of phenolic compounds. The detailed kinetic properties were obtained by the transition state theory (TST) and the Rice – Ramsperger – Kassel – Marcus (RRKM) theory. Results confirm that the primary ozonides originated from guaiacol occupy considerably long retention time than the short-lived primary ozonides formed from vinyl-type compounds in the air. The TST rate constant of guaiacol ozonolysis is calculated with a value of 8.81 x 10-20 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at room temperature. The RRKM results prove that the rate constant is positively dependent on temperature but shows no relation with pressure. The reactivity of substituted phenols exhibits a strong correlation with the ozone affinity of carbon atoms and the orbital energy difference (ELo-Hac) between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of O3 and the highest occupied molecular orbital of phenols. The substituents can reduce the value of ELo-Hac and improve the phenols’ reactivity, especially when they locate at the ortho- and para-position. The substituents also improve the ozone affinity of carbon atoms due to the electron-withdrawing effect. The methyl group delivers a moderate impact on the reactivity compared to hydroxyl and methoxy groups.

The conversion of silyloxyarenes to boronic acid pinacol esters via nickel catalysis is described. In contrast to other borylation protocols of inert C-O bonds, the method is competent in activating the carbon-oxygen bond of silyloxyarenes in isolated aromatic systems lacking a directing group. The catalytic functionalization of benzyl silyl ethers was also achieved under these conditions. 1,2,3-Triazole contained conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) have recently emerged as a new class of efficient photocatalysts. To gain more insight into the excellent photocatalytic activity of this kind of CPPs, herein, we report the design and preparation of a series of 1,2,3-triazole-based CPPs via oxidative coupling polymerization to study their photocatalytic performance. These CPPs have donor-acceptor properties and 1,2,3-triazole serves as an electron acceptor. The resulting CPPs with thiophene, carbazole and diphenylamine as electron donor units, respectively, have distinct porosities and optoelectronic properties, and showed effective photocatalytic performance towards oxidative hydroxylation of arylboric acids and alkylation of vinylarenes with diethyl bromomalonate or bromoacetonitrile. The thiophene contained CPP was a more efficient photocatalyst for the catalytic reactions, which can be attributed to its smaller optical band gap and greater charge separation effi-ciency. Furthermore, PTPT has shown reliable recyclability with no significant loss in its catalytic activity.

In the present work the products and characteristics of bio-yields obtained from pyrolysis of different types of walnut shells (WS) by using a fixed bed pyrolyzer. The different walnut shells considered are paper (PSW), thin (TSW), medium (MSW) and hard (HSW) shelled walnut. The biomass samples were pyrolyzed at various temperatures, particle sizes, heating and sweep gas flow rates. The results revealed that the maximum bio-oil 44.7, biochar 37.6 and gas 40.4 wt% yields have been obtained for HSW, MSW and HSW at a pyrolysis temperature of 550, 375 and 750 degrees C respectively at heating rate 0.33 K/sec, particle size 0.5-1.5 mm with swept gas flow rate 1.6 x 10(-6) m(3)/s. The higher heating value (HHV) of bio-oil obtained from different walnut shells are ranged from 26 to 27.3 MJ/kg. Comprehensive physiochemical characteristics such as density, viscosity, flash point, pour point and water content of bio-oils have been obtained. Chemical composition analysis of bio-oils revealed that the pyrolytic bio-oil composition is predominated by oxygenated compounds such as carbonyl, methoxy, phenols and carboxyl groups determined by GC-MS, FTIR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR. The pyrolysis gas mainly contained CH4 CO, H-2, CO2, and light hydrocarbons. Based on these results and structural analysis of the bio-oil, it can be concluded that the bio-oil obtained from WS may be used as a feedstock for furnaces, as a fuel, as a lubricant after modifications and value-added products via pyrolysis.
