The effect of introducing a lateral methyl substituent and the two different alkoxy terminal groups on the mesophase behavior of three-benzene-ring molecular core of azo-ester compounds bearing 2-methylbutoxy unit on the opposite terminal side (C1-C6) were explored. Their structures were confirmed by several spectroscopic techniques (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, H-1 and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy). The mesomorphic properties of these compounds were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. Except for the un-substituted terminals (C1 and C4), all other derivatives are liquid crystalline, exhibiting enantiotropic nematic liquid crystal phase. The alteration of the alkoxy chain length from methoxy to butoxy at the phenyl ester terminal group (ring A) for each set of laterally-neat and laterally methyl-substituted mesogens decreases the nematic temperature range. A decrease in the mesophase temperature range is also observed when a lateral methyl substituent is incorporated into phenylazo ring of the mesogenic core (ring C). Optical study demonstrated that their absorption spectra are identical in shape due to the structural similarities of the mesogenic core. The corresponding fluorescence spectra exhibited blue-emission with the laterally methyl substituted compounds having a relatively higher fluorescence intensity compared to that of its laterally un-substituted analogues. Furthermore, the laterally methyl-substituted derivatives were subjected to the planar alignment and their dielectric and electro-optic properties were investigated. The nematic phase of the aligned samples shows antiferroelectric switching behavior with spontaneous polarization, P-s similar to 5 mu C/cm(2). (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A visible-light-induced carbonylation of indoles with phenols for the synthesis of indole-3-carboxylates has been developed. The reaction proceeded via a radical carbonylation process in which elementary I-2 was used as an effective photosensitive initiator and, thus, avoided the use of transition metal catalysts. A series of different aryl indole-3-carboxylates were prepared in moderate to good yields. The broad applicability of this methodology was further highlighted by the late-stage functionalization of several phenol-containing natural products and pharmaceuticals.

The intramolecular [4+2] cycloaddition between arenes and allenes first reported by Himbert gives rapid access to rigid polycyclic scaffolds. Herein, we report a one-pot oxyalkynylation/cycloaddition reaction proceeding under mild conditions (23-90 degrees C) and providing complex polycyclic architectures with high efficiency, and atom and step economy. Characterization of volatile off-odor compounds in thermal duck egg gels was investigated by gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry (GC-O-MS), odor activity values (OAVs) and aroma recombination. The results demonstrated that the off-odor of thermal duck egg mainly came from egg yolk (EY), and content of aldehydes was the highest in EY. Anaerobic treatment in nitrogen contributed to decreased off-odor sensory scores and volatile components of the heated egg gels. Aerobic EY gels (treated in air) were determined to contain eight volatile compounds with OAVs greater than 1, such as hexanal, nonanal, benzaldehyde, (E)-2-octenal, (E)-2-nonenal, (E, E)-2,4-decadienal, 1-octen-3-ol and 2-pentylfuran. However, three key volatile components (nonanal, benzaldehyde and (E)-2-nonenal) with OAVs greater than 1 were found in anaerobic EY gels. Moreover, on the basis of results of recombination and omission experiments, hexanal, (E)-2-octenal, (E, E)2,4-decadienal, 1-octen-3-ol and 2-pentylfuran were identified as key off-odor components in thermal EY gels. Sensory evaluation of the recombination model with five aroma compounds scored 4.38 out of 5 points. The major aroma profile of the off-flavor from egg EY gels included strong fatty, nutty, and mushroom aromas.

Anthracyclines are effective drugs in the treatment of various cancers, but their use comes with severe side effects. The archetypal anthracycline drug, doxorubicin, displays two molecular modes of action: DNA double-strand break formation (through topoisomerase II alpha poisoning) and chromatin damage (via eviction of histones). These biological activities can be modulated and toxic side effects can be reduced by separating these two modes of action through alteration of the aminoglycoside moiety of doxorubicin. We herein report on the design, synthesis, and evaluation of a coherent set of configurational doxorubicin analogues featuring all possible stereoisomers of the 1,2-amino-alcohol characteristic for the doxorubicin 3-amino-2,3-dideoxyfucoside, each in nonsubstituted and N,N-dimethylated forms. The set of doxorubicin analogues was synthesized using appropriately protected 2,3,6-dideoxy-3-amino glycosyl donors, equipped with an alkynylbenzoate anomeric leaving group, and the doxorubicin aglycon acceptor. The majority of these glycosylations proceeded in a highly stereoselective manner to provide the desired axial alpha-linkage. We show that both stereochemistry of the 3-amine carbon and N-substitution state are critical for anthracycline cytotoxicity and generally improve cellular uptake. N,N-Dimethylepirubicin is identified as the most potent anthracycline that does not induce DNA damage while remaining cytotoxic.

Herein, we report a simple and efficient approach to synthesize a functionalized 2,18-dimethoxy-5,10,15-trioxa[9]helicene. It was synthesized from simple phenol building blocks using two subsequent reactions namely oxidative coupling and dehydrative cyclization or palladium mediated cyclization. The molecular integrity of the helical core was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR techniques. Its crystal structure showed the spontaneous resolution which was attributed to the conglomerate formation of the same helical isomer via C-H…O and pi…pi or H…pi interactions. Then, it was converted to racemic 2,18-dihydoxy-5,10,15-trioxa[9]helicene. Enantiomers were separated on preparative HPLC with high optical purity (>99 % ee). Based on electronic circular dichroism, the absolute configurations of dextrorotary and levorotatory antipodes were assigned as P and M, respectively. We also studied the absorption, emission and chiroptical behavior of these helical compounds in the solution state.

Since 30 years, liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) have been attracting the attention of many researchers thanks to their anisotropic molecular structure which allows them to build up artificial muscles. Possible applications span from soft robotics to biomedical or tunable optical devices. The power of thiol-yne click chemistry was recently demonstrated in the preparation of smart polymers, in particular LCEs, in which the mesogenic units are incorporated both in the main-chain and as pendant groups. To enrich the library of available LCE materials, in this work, several liquid crystalline dithiols and alkynes have been synthesized and copolymerized to obtain elastomers with different thermomechanical properties. The architecture of the main chain was found to play a prominent role in modulating the clearing point in a range of 60 degrees C, whereas only a minor contribution is given by the mesogens in the side chain. On the other hand, the mechanical response resulted highly sensitive to fine details of the side-chain structure. Accordingly, the present study not only improves the basic understanding of the chemical-physical properties of LCEs but paves the way to the preparation of multicomponent actuators able to deform in different temperature ranges, thus ultimately leading to complex soft robotic operations.
