The synthesis features a unified approach to both steroid subunits, employing a titanium-mediated propargylation reaction to achieve divergence from a common precursor. An efficient method for the dehydrogenative coupling of silanes with alcohols under photocatalysis was developed. The reaction proceeded in the presence of Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 (0.5 mol%) under visible light irradiation in acetonitrile at room temperature. The developed methodology was also applicable for the synthesis of silanols using water as a coupling partner.

This paper describes a liquid-liquid biphasic flow reaction system that is simple to control. In a liquid-liquid biphasic flow reaction, the slug-flow in the tube reactors generally improves the reaction rate. However, we show that larger tube diameters decreased the reaction rate and the formation of the slug-flow was influenced by the tube diameter, the size of the mixer, and the pump mechanism. These results indicated that technical difficulties with the slug-flow could be an obstacle to scale-up. To resolve this problem, we suggest the use of a Taylor vortex flow reactor to achieve a higher reaction rate than with batch and slug-flow systems.

Wheat bran, which contains a large amount of cellulose, is used as a raw material to produce soy sauce, but it is hard to degrade during fermentation. Steam explosion (SE) is efficient in hydrolyzing the cellulose for enhancing enzymatic digestion and solvent accessibility. In this study, we applied a SE at a sufficiently high pressure to damage the integrity of the wheat bran structure and modify it to assume a layered form. We found that cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin structures were collapsed by SE pretreatment, which was indicated by their changes in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The amounts of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin decreased by 5.8%, 21.4%, and 43.4%, respectively, under 1.5 MPa, resulting in the significant reduction of sugar and amino acid nitrogen. The co-reaction of nonenzymatic browning after SE pretreatment resulted in an intense increase in flavor (overall feeling), as determined by electronic nose analysis and sensory evaluation. In conclusion, SE pretreatment under 1.0 MPa was proven to be the most optimal state for the production of aroma compounds (volatile compounds), which are essential for soy sauce production.

A composite film with multiple anti-counterfeiting features was demonstrated by superposing quantum dots (QDs) polymer matrix (film A) and cholesteric liquid crystal film (film B) together. The first-line and second-line anti-counterfeiting characteristics were successfully implemented by employing thermochromic, angular photochromic, and circularly polarized discoloration of film B, respectively. By initiatively utilizing the different relative positions between the fluorescence emission peak (lambda(em)) of film A and the central selective reflection wavelength (lambda(em)) of film B at different temperatures, which resulted in changes in the fluorescence spectra or the different presence of latent patterns, the most important third-line anti-counterfeiting feature was successfully achieved.

A thorough study of mild and environmentally friendly electrochemical-induced hydroxylation of aryl halides without a catalyst is presented. The best protocol consists of hydroxylation of different aryl iodides and aryl bromides by water solution in the presence of Et3N under air, affording the target phenols in good isolated yields. Moreover, aryl chlorides were successfully employed as substrates. This methodology also provides a direct pathway for the formation of deoxyphomalone, which displayed a significant anti-proliferation effect.

Direct oxidative coupling of different inert C-H bonds is the most straightforward and environmentally benign method to construct C-C bonds. In this paper, we developed a Pd-catalyzed intramolecular oxidative coupling between unactivated aliphatic and aryl C-H bonds. This chemistry showed great potential to build up fused cyclic scaffolds from linear substrates through oxidative couplings. Privileged chromane and tetralin scaffolds were constructed from readily available linear starting materials in the absence of any organohalides and organometallic partners.
