Hydrothermal treatment of gadolinium nitrate and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) afforded a new metal-organic framework compound, {[Gd-4(NDC)(6)(H2O)(6)]center dot 2H(2)O}n(1). Compound 1 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, therrmogravimetric analysis (TGA) and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. It is crystallized in the monoclinic system with the P2(1)/n space group. Four crystallographically distinct Gd (III) centres are interconnected with each other through bridged carboxylato oxygen atoms and water molecules to form tetranuclear secondary building units, which are further connected through the carboxylato ligand and the network propagates along the crystallographic ac plane to form a 2D structure. Subsequent reinforcement from the remaining carboxylato oxygen atoms gives rise to a robust 3D framework structure. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrates that compound 1 is fairly stable after dehydration under a nitrogen atmosphere. Notably, compound 1 is capable of catalyzing the O-arylation reaction efficiently between substituted phenols and bromoarene under heterogeneous conditions at 80 degrees C to afford unsymmetrical diarylethers. Bio-oils after hydrotreatment can still contain significant amount of phenols and cyclic olefins as the products of an incomplete deoxygenation. The removal of these compounds would be necessary to produce suitable components for automotive fuels. However, no routine method currently exists for the reliable determination of these groups in hydrotreated bio-oils (HBOs). In this paper, we analyzed 140 different pure oxygenates as model compounds using the bromine number method (ASTM D1159) observing that most compounds present in HBOs react with one equivalent of bromine. The determination of phenols using bromine number method in crude biooil is complicated especially by the presence of guaiacols and syringols that react with more than one equivalent of bromine and, thus, the obtained result is significantly overestimated. Further we optimized the chromatographic separation of hydrocarbons from HBOs for the selective determination of olefins content. As no other reactive compounds under the conditions of the method, besides phenols and olefins, were observed in HBOs, the difference between HBO bromine number (before hydrocarbons separation) and olefins content correspond to the total amount of phenols. The method was finally applied to 11 HBOs with different content of oxygen, providing a good correlation between phenols and oxygen content.

Polysulfide anions are endowed with unique redox properties, attracting considerable attentions for their applications in alkali metals-sulfur batteries. However, the employment of these anionic species in redox catalysis for small molecule synthesis remains underdeveloped due to their moderate-poor electrochemical potential in the ground state, whereas some of them are characterized by photoabsorptions in visible spectral regions. Herein, we disclose the use of polysulfide anions as visible light photoredox catalysts for aryl cross-coupling reactions. The reaction design enables single-electron reduction of aryl halides upon the photoexcitation of tetrasulfide dianions (S-4(2-)). The resulting aryl radicals are engaged in (hetero)-biaryl cross-coupling, borylation, and hydrogenation in a redox catalytic regime involving S-4(center dot-) and S-4(2-)/S-3(center dot-)/S-3(2-) redox couples.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is recognized as an indicator of fecal bacterial contamination, and the induction of intracellular beta-galactosidase (Gal) is commonly used for sensitive and selective E. coli detection. However, this method requires a permeabilization process to ensure that the Gal substrate and product are highly permeable through the E. coli membrane, making it unsuitable for simple point-of-care detection. Here, we report a sensitive electrochemical method for E. coli detection that does not require a permeabilization process. Intracellular Gal expression is increased via induction by isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG). 4-Methoxyphenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside (MPGP) and 4-methoxyphenol (MP) are used as the highly cell-permeable Gal substrate and product, respectively. Externally-added tyrosinase (Tyr) converts MP into electrochemically active 4-methoxycatechol, which is then electrochemically oxidized via electrochemical-chemical redox cycling involving an electrode, 4-methoxycatechol, and tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine. The presence of MPGP during the induction of intracellular Gal led to amplified MP production. The results of four different detection methods using three Gal substrates (MPGP, phenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside, and 4-aminophenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside) were compared. The detection limit for both drinking water and tap water spiked with E. coli, obtained following a 2-h-long IPTG treatment and 5-min-long Tyr reaction, was similar to 2 x 10(3) colony-forming units (CFU)/mL, indicating that this method can be applied to monitoring E. coli contamination in water samples. Importantly, the present method does not require the electrode modification, affinity binding, washing, and filtration steps.

Methods to activate the relatively stable ether C-O bonds and convert them to other functional groups are desirable. One-electron reduction of ethers is a potentially promising route to cleave the C-O bond. However, owing to the highly negative redox potential of alkyl aryl ethers (E-red < -2.6 V vs SCE), this mode of ether C-O bond activation is challenging. Herein, we report the visible-light-induced photocatalytic cleavage of the alkyl aryl ether C-O bond using a carbazole-based organic photocatalyst (PC). Both benzylic and non-benzylic aryl ethers underwent C-O bond cleavage to form the corresponding phenol products. Addition of Cs2CO3 was beneficial, especially in reactions using a N-H carbazole PC. The reaction was proposed to occur via single-electron transfer (SET) from the excited-state carbazole to the substrate ether. Interaction of the N-H carbazole PC with Cs2CO3 via hydrogen bonding exists, which enables a deprotonation-assisted electron-transfer mechanism to operate. In addition, the Lewis acidic Cs cation interacts with the substrate alkyl aryl ether to activate it as an electron acceptor. Under metal- and ligand-free conditions, the economical and accessible CF3SO3H successfully catalyzed homogeneous O-H bond insertion reactions between hydroxyl compounds and diazo compounds. Including phenols, alcohols, water and oximes, these O-H bond insertion reactions are very general and functional-group tolerant. Here, we first report the O-H bond insertion of oximes (ketoximes and aldoximes), and their structures were characterized by X-ray crystallography. Moreover, a simple and effective method for S-H insertion reactions of thiols was also developed, delivering the desired C-S bond products with good to excellent yields. It is worth noting that the efficacy of the developed methodology could be further shown by the expeditious synthesis of the PPAR agonist MBX-102 acid.

An efficient method for the dehydrogenative coupling of silanes with alcohols under photocatalysis was developed. The reaction proceeded in the presence of Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 (0.5 mol%) under visible light irradiation in acetonitrile at room temperature.
