A postpolymerization nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction is used as a strategy to efficiently diversify conjugated polymers. Conjugated polymers and small molecular models bearing tetrafluorophenyl and octafluorobiphenyl units are reacted with thiophenol derivatives, phenol derivatives, and carbazole in the presence of bases. Model reactions provide insights into the reactivity, numbers and patterns of substitution, structural features, and spectroscopic data. Thiophenol derivatives and carbazole achieve complete substitution of fluorine atoms in both the polymer and the model reactions, whereas phenol derivatives result in disubstitution in each arene ring with para-selectivity. The highly twisted and structurally rigid main chain structures are confirmed for a fully substituted arene motif in both the polymers and the models, resulting in the formation of syn- and anti-atropisomer or axial chirality and in the twisted intramolecular charge transfer character. The obtained polymers and models show unique optical and electrochemical properties, including phosphorescence at low temperatures in the case of the sulfur-containing materials.

The stereochemical mechanism of the nucleophilic substitution reaction at pentacoordinate phosphorus (P-V) atom is rarely studied. Here, we report the Atherton-Todd-type reaction of pentacoordinate hydrospirophosphorane with phenolic compounds in detail. The stereochemical mechanism of nucleophilic substitution at P-V atom was proposed by P-31 NMR tracing experiment, X-ray diffraction analysis, and density functional theory calculations. The first step of the Atherton-Todd-type reaction is the formation of halogenated spirophosphorane intermediate with retention of configuration at phosphorus definitely. The second step is a nucleophilic substitution reaction at P-V atom of halogenated spirophosphorane. When using CCl4 as a halogenating agent, the reaction of chlorinated spirophosphorane proceeds via S(N)2(P-V) mechanism, and the backside attack of P-Cl bond is the main pathway. For chlorinated spirophosphorane with Delta(P) configuration, the completely P-inverted product is normally obtained. As for chlorinated spirophosphorane with Lambda(P) configuration, which has larger steric hindrance behind P-Cl bond, the proportion of P-retained products apparently increases and a pair of diastereoisomers is acquired. Furthermore, if CBr4 is used as a halogenating agent, the nucleophilic substitution reaction of brominated spirophosphorane may go through a S(N)1(P-V) mechanism to afford a pair of diastereoisomers.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is recognized as an indicator of fecal bacterial contamination, and the induction of intracellular beta-galactosidase (Gal) is commonly used for sensitive and selective E. coli detection. However, this method requires a permeabilization process to ensure that the Gal substrate and product are highly permeable through the E. coli membrane, making it unsuitable for simple point-of-care detection. Here, we report a sensitive electrochemical method for E. coli detection that does not require a permeabilization process. Intracellular Gal expression is increased via induction by isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG). 4-Methoxyphenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside (MPGP) and 4-methoxyphenol (MP) are used as the highly cell-permeable Gal substrate and product, respectively. Externally-added tyrosinase (Tyr) converts MP into electrochemically active 4-methoxycatechol, which is then electrochemically oxidized via electrochemical-chemical redox cycling involving an electrode, 4-methoxycatechol, and tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine. The presence of MPGP during the induction of intracellular Gal led to amplified MP production. The results of four different detection methods using three Gal substrates (MPGP, phenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside, and 4-aminophenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside) were compared. The detection limit for both drinking water and tap water spiked with E. coli, obtained following a 2-h-long IPTG treatment and 5-min-long Tyr reaction, was similar to 2 x 10(3) colony-forming units (CFU)/mL, indicating that this method can be applied to monitoring E. coli contamination in water samples. Importantly, the present method does not require the electrode modification, affinity binding, washing, and filtration steps.

Since 30 years, liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) have been attracting the attention of many researchers thanks to their anisotropic molecular structure which allows them to build up artificial muscles. Possible applications span from soft robotics to biomedical or tunable optical devices. The power of thiol-yne click chemistry was recently demonstrated in the preparation of smart polymers, in particular LCEs, in which the mesogenic units are incorporated both in the main-chain and as pendant groups. To enrich the library of available LCE materials, in this work, several liquid crystalline dithiols and alkynes have been synthesized and copolymerized to obtain elastomers with different thermomechanical properties. The architecture of the main chain was found to play a prominent role in modulating the clearing point in a range of 60 degrees C, whereas only a minor contribution is given by the mesogens in the side chain. On the other hand, the mechanical response resulted highly sensitive to fine details of the side-chain structure. Accordingly, the present study not only improves the basic understanding of the chemical-physical properties of LCEs but paves the way to the preparation of multicomponent actuators able to deform in different temperature ranges, thus ultimately leading to complex soft robotic operations.

This work discusses a new measurement concept that uses contactless Raman spectrometry of free radical polymerization (FRP) in a milliscale reactor. The setup is based on a multiphase system with unsteady operation due to a change in the flow direction. The objective is to develop a quasi-isothermal measurement method for the determination of reaction kinetics with high automation capability. The FRP of acrylic acid with 2,2′-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride as the initiator serves as the model reaction. The reaction order for the initiator and monomer concentrations as well as the temperature dependence is determined. On the basis of the measured rates, an estimation of the thermal behavior of the reactor can be made. The pendular slug reactor is an extension of the known measurement methods for FRP and requires only a few grams of material.

Herein, we report a simple and efficient approach to synthesize a functionalized 2,18-dimethoxy-5,10,15-trioxa[9]helicene. It was synthesized from simple phenol building blocks using two subsequent reactions namely oxidative coupling and dehydrative cyclization or palladium mediated cyclization. The molecular integrity of the helical core was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR techniques. Its crystal structure showed the spontaneous resolution which was attributed to the conglomerate formation of the same helical isomer via C-H…O and pi…pi or H…pi interactions. Then, it was converted to racemic 2,18-dihydoxy-5,10,15-trioxa[9]helicene. Enantiomers were separated on preparative HPLC with high optical purity (>99 % ee). Based on electronic circular dichroism, the absolute configurations of dextrorotary and levorotatory antipodes were assigned as P and M, respectively. We also studied the absorption, emission and chiroptical behavior of these helical compounds in the solution state.
