Attempted nucleophilic displacements of L-rhamnosyl 2,4-bistriflates led to serendipitous formation of a chiral diene via competing cascade eliminations. The reaction also followed the same pathway with D-rhamnosyl and Dmannosyl 2,4-bistriflates substrates providing access to dienes with opposite stereochemistry. The reaction presumably proceeds through E2 elimination of C2 triflate followed by allylic rearrangement. The easily accessible chiral dienes would be useful in the synthesis of natural products.

Wheat bran, which contains a large amount of cellulose, is used as a raw material to produce soy sauce, but it is hard to degrade during fermentation. Steam explosion (SE) is efficient in hydrolyzing the cellulose for enhancing enzymatic digestion and solvent accessibility. In this study, we applied a SE at a sufficiently high pressure to damage the integrity of the wheat bran structure and modify it to assume a layered form. We found that cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin structures were collapsed by SE pretreatment, which was indicated by their changes in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The amounts of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin decreased by 5.8%, 21.4%, and 43.4%, respectively, under 1.5 MPa, resulting in the significant reduction of sugar and amino acid nitrogen. The co-reaction of nonenzymatic browning after SE pretreatment resulted in an intense increase in flavor (overall feeling), as determined by electronic nose analysis and sensory evaluation. In conclusion, SE pretreatment under 1.0 MPa was proven to be the most optimal state for the production of aroma compounds (volatile compounds), which are essential for soy sauce production.

A facile and general method for constructing carbon-heteroatom (C-P, C-O, C-S, and C-N) bonds via C-N cleavage of benzyl ammonium salts under transition-metal-free conditions was reported. The combination of t-BuOK and 18-crown-6 enabled a wide range of substituted benzyl ammonium salts to couple readily with different kinds of heteroatom nucleophiles, i.e. hydrogen phosphoryl compounds, alcohols, thiols, and amines. Good functional group tolerance was demonstrated. The scale-up reaction and one-pot synthesis were also successfully performed.

Bio-oils after hydrotreatment can still contain significant amount of phenols and cyclic olefins as the products of an incomplete deoxygenation. The removal of these compounds would be necessary to produce suitable components for automotive fuels. However, no routine method currently exists for the reliable determination of these groups in hydrotreated bio-oils (HBOs). In this paper, we analyzed 140 different pure oxygenates as model compounds using the bromine number method (ASTM D1159) observing that most compounds present in HBOs react with one equivalent of bromine. The determination of phenols using bromine number method in crude biooil is complicated especially by the presence of guaiacols and syringols that react with more than one equivalent of bromine and, thus, the obtained result is significantly overestimated. Further we optimized the chromatographic separation of hydrocarbons from HBOs for the selective determination of olefins content. As no other reactive compounds under the conditions of the method, besides phenols and olefins, were observed in HBOs, the difference between HBO bromine number (before hydrocarbons separation) and olefins content correspond to the total amount of phenols. The method was finally applied to 11 HBOs with different content of oxygen, providing a good correlation between phenols and oxygen content.

In this study, a series of mono- and diallylphenol derivative were designed, synthesized, and evaluated as potential human 15-lipoxygenase-1 (15-hLOX-1) inhibitors. Radical scavenging potency of the synthetic allylphenol derivatives was assessed and the results were in accordance with lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibition potency. It was found that the electronic natures of allyl moiety andparasubstituents play the main role in radical scavenging activity and subsequently LOX inhibition potency of the synthetic inhibitors. Among the synthetic compounds, 2,6-diallyl-4-(hexyloxy)phenol (42) and 2,6-diallyl-4-aminophenol (47) showed the best results for LOX inhibition (IC50= 0.88 and 0.80 mu M, respectively).

Light Emitting Polymers (LEPs) have gained attention in optoelectronics. However, stability and regulation of emission color remain a challenge. This study aims to overcome the challenge by formulating a Polymer Blend (PB) which consists of a LEP ? poly [2-methoxy,5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)1,4-phynylenevinylene (MEH-PPV) and a non-conjugated polymer ? poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). A simple approach of in situ polymerization of the non-conjugated polymer in the MEH-PPV solution leads to alteration of size of the MEH-PPV polymer chain and modified the emission color from red-orange to bluish-green. The barrier properties of PMMA improve the stability of PB in an ambient environment with unnoticeable luminescence loss. This type of PB shall find application in Organic Light-Emitting Devices.

The conversion of silyloxyarenes to boronic acid pinacol esters via nickel catalysis is described. In contrast to other borylation protocols of inert C-O bonds, the method is competent in activating the carbon-oxygen bond of silyloxyarenes in isolated aromatic systems lacking a directing group. The catalytic functionalization of benzyl silyl ethers was also achieved under these conditions. Sequential cross-coupling reactions were achieved by leveraging the orthogonal reactivity of silyloxyarenes, which could then be functionalized subsequently.

Herein, we first present a nickel-catalyzed arylation and alkenylation of tert-cyclobutanols with aryl/alkenyl triflates via a C-C bond cleavage. The porous bioceramic scaffolds require favorable mechanical properties and excellent bioactivity to promote bone repair. In this work, 45S5 bioglass (R) & biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) bioceramic scaffolds with a diamond lattice structure (porosity of 70%) were manufactured accurately by digital light processing (DLP). After optimizing the solid loading of bioceramic suspension to 40 vol%, scaffolds with the minimum pore size of 400 mu m were fabricated successfully under exposure energy of 12.54 mJ/cm(2). In the initial stage of sintering, crystallization occurred during 45S5 bioglass (R) itself, bioglass also promoted hydroxyapatite (HA) decomposition to tricalcium phosphate (TCP). With extending holding time to 4 h, Si4+ from 45S5 bioglass (R) diffused into TCP to produce Ca-5(PO4)(2)SiO4, which could enhance the compressive strength of bioceramic scaffolds. Meanwhile, bioglass would assist the growth and roughening of ceramic grains because of the ion-diffusion from bioglass to BCP. However, as holding time extended to 6 h, abnormal grain growth and cracks occurred which would decrease compressive strength. The best value of compressive strength is 1.735 MPa at the holding time of 4 h. 45S5 bioglass (R) also accelerated ion exchange such as Si4+ and CO32- between bioceramic and SBF solution. This kind of bioceramics may be used as bioactive scaffolds with customizable fine structures and provide potential applications in bone tissue engineering.
