Silver nanoparticles were fabricated in the presence and absence of light with silver nitrate and aqueous extract of Prunus cerasifera leaf via facile and one-pot green method. P. cerasifera leaf extract reduced and stabilized the nanoparticles with phytometabolites expunging the need for addition of external reducing agents. Optimized silver nanoparticle syntheses was done with variations in leaf extract concentration, time, temperature, and molarity for deciphering the photocatalytic, antifungal, and antibacterial potential of synthesized nanoparticles. Optical, compositional, and morphological analyses of the synthesized nanoparticles were done by UV-visible spectrometry (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed firstly through UV-Vis by exhibition of peaks with 400-450 nm. FTIR confirmed the presence of major organic groups responsible for reduction of nanoparticles. AFM confirmed the spherical morphology of the synthesized nanoparticles with remarkable dispersion without any agglomeration. Phytochemical analysis for P. cerasifera leaf metabolites was done by GC-MS. Spherical nanoparticles having a size range of 57-144 nm were obtained with face-centered cubic crystals. The average crystallite size obtained from XRD spectra was 2.34 nm. Enhanced photocatalytic first-order kinetics were obtained for persistent organic pollutants, i.e., crystal violet, methylene blue, and malachite green (R-2 = 0.99, 0.99, 0.98) in less than 15 min. Biomedical and agricultural significance as an antibiotic drug and utilization as a fungicides substitute was explored against nine resistant microbes. Statistically significant variations were analyzed via one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Kruskal-Wallis test and specific multi comparison tests. Active to highly active inhibition zones manifested the use of biogenic silver nanoparticles as potential candidate for applications in biological arenas and as environmental remediators.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and their corresponding N-oxides (PANOs) have been determined in food and feed at levels relevant for consumer health. More than 660 different PAs have been detected, but few are available as reference substances for analytical demands. In the context of the European legislation on maximum levels of PAs in food products, a defined analytical scope of 21 PAs for determination has been suggested. An expansion of the scope from 21 to 35 PAs, including 14 structural isomers, is currently under discussion. In the present study, a target screening method was established for a comprehensive characterisation of PA profiles of the species Echium vulgare, Heliotropium europaeum, Cynoglossum officinale and Symphytum spp. to assess whether an expansion of the analytical scope is required to quantitatively cover the total PA contents of Boraginaceae species. The scope of the method comprised known and unknown PAs previously screened and confirmed in the respective plant extracts. A total of 176 PAs and PANOs were detected. The toxic 1,2-unsaturated PAs represent the predominant PA type with about 98% of the mean total content. This PA profiling demonstrates that an expansion of the scope from 21 to 35 PAs is required to adequately cover the mean total PA contents of Cynoglossum officinale and H. europaeum, whereas in the case of Symphytum spp. and Echium vulgare an expansion would not be necessary.

We have studied the generation of terahertz (THz) radiation via the interaction of an intense femtosecond laser pulse with aluminum (Al) and plastic targets pre-ablated by a picosecond ablation pulse. The measurements of the plasma shadowgraph and 1D-MULTI simulations show a similar micrometer density scale length of the pre-ablated plasma for the two types of targets after ablation. It is found that for the Al target, the intensity of THz radiation increased obviously under the condition of ablation, and only with the appropriate ablation delay time, the cutoff energy and charge of the accelerated protons also increased. 2D-simulations using the EPOCH program indicate that the strong enhancement of THz for the Al target is due to the increased number of energetic electrons from the interaction between the main laser and the ablated plasma. However, for the plastic targets, the intensity of THz radiation was almost vanished in the case of ablation, but the accelerated protons still existed and the cutoff energy even tended to increase. However, due to the lack of ability to simulate the molecular structure, we cannot distinguish between Al and plastic targets in the simulation. The mechanism of radiation suppression by ablation of the plastic target needs further investigation.

A highly efficient and modular synthesis of nematode pheromone ascarosides was developed, which highlights a 4-step scalable synthesis of the common intermediate 10 in 23% yield from commercially available l-rhamnose by using orthoesterification/benzylation/orthoester rearrangement as the key step. Six diverse ascarosides were synthesized accordingly. Notably, biological investigations revealed that ascr#1 and ascr#18 treatment resulted in enhanced callose accumulation in Arabidopsis leaves. And ascr#18 also increased the expression of defense-related genes such as PR1, PDF1.2, LOX2 and AOS, which might contribute to the enhanced plant defense responses. This study not only allows a facile access to 1-O, 2-O, and 4-O substituted ascarosides, but also provides valuable insights into their biological activities in inducing plant defense response, as well as their mode of action.

The effect of catalyst restructuring on the polydopamine-supported Pd catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of ethyl 4-nitrobenzoate and the catalytic hydrogenation of (E)-2-methyl-2-butenoic acid is reported. Transmission electron microscopy investigation of different catalyst pre-treatment and reaction conditions revealed high catalytic activity in both reactions unless drastic aggregation of the active metal occurred. In the transfer hydrogenation reaction aggregation was primarily dependent on the H-source used, while in the catalytic hydrogenation additives in combination with the reductive environment led to extensive Pd aggregation and thus decreased catalytic activity. The enantioselective hydrogenation of (E)-2-methyl-2-butenoic acid showed increased enantioselectivity and decreased conversion with increased particle size.

A full understanding of changes of the microbiome and metabolome during Napier grass silage in relation to aerobic exposure can improve the nutritional value and extend the aerobic stability of this important feed in tropical and subtropical regions. The round bale silage of Napier grass was prepared with deionized water (control) and screened strains Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR753 (LR753) and L. buchneri 40788 (LB). Silages were stored at ambient temperature (30-40 degrees C) for 60 days, followed by 2 and 4 days of aerobic exposure. Strains LB and LR753 significantly improved aerobic stability (>84 h vs. 18 h of control) of baled Napier grass silage by inhibiting the growth of Saccharomycetales as for the higher production of acetic acid (P < 0.05). Weissella and Issatchenkia spp. were the dominant bacteria and fungi in 60-day silage, respectively. LC-MS/MS detected a total of 426 metabolites throughout ensiling and aerobic exposure. With the decrease of Weissella spp. and the increase of Acetobacter spp., the metabolites associated with both were mainly odor-related (3-methylbutanoic acid, isoquinoline, and cuminaldehyde) and amines (tryptamine and tyramine) in control silage, while more antimicrobial activity metabolites were found in strains LB and LR753-treated silage (methylbutanoic acid, 1,2-propanediol, and tiglic acid). Screened local strain LR753 showed a promising potential for improving silage fermentation and aerobic stability of Napier grass. The present study indicates that adequately describing the microbiome and metabolome of silages during fermentation and aerobic exposure can improve ensiling practices and the screening of silage inoculants that act synergistically with the natural microbiome of the forage in hot and humid areas. Isomerization-based strategies to enable the stereodivergent construction of complex polyenes from geometrically defined alkene linchpins remain conspicuously underdeveloped. Mitigating the thermodynamic constraints inherent to isomerization is further frustrated by the considerations of atom efficiency in idealized low-molecular weight precursors. In this work, we report a general ambiphilic C-3 scaffold that can be isomerized and bidirectionally extended. Predicated on highly efficient triplet energy transfer, the selective isomerization of beta-borylacrylates is contingent on the participation of the boron p orbital in the substrate chromophore. Rotation of the C(sp(2))-B bond by 90 degrees in the product renders re-excitation inefficient and endows directionality. This subtle stereoelectronic gating mechanism enables the stereocontrolled syntheses of well-defined retinoic acid derivatives.
