Attempted nucleophilic displacements of L-rhamnosyl 2,4-bistriflates led to serendipitous formation of a chiral diene via competing cascade eliminations. The reaction also followed the same pathway with D-rhamnosyl and Dmannosyl 2,4-bistriflates substrates providing access to dienes with opposite stereochemistry. The reaction presumably proceeds through E2 elimination of C2 triflate followed by allylic rearrangement. The easily accessible chiral dienes would be useful in the synthesis of natural products.

Herein, a dual nickel/ruthenium strategy is developed for photoinduced decarboxylative cross-coupling between alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids and cycloketone oxime esters. The reaction mechanism is distinct from previous photoinduced decarboxylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids. This reaction might proceed through a nickelacyclopropane intermediate. The C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) bond constructed by the aforementioned reaction provides an efficient approach to obtaining various cyanoalkyl alkenes, which are synthetically valuable organic skeletons in organic and medicinal chemistry, under mild reaction conditions. The protocol tolerates many critical functional groups and provides a route for the modification of complex organic molecules.

The solvent free oxidation of benzyl alcohol to Benzaldehyde using bimetallic alloy nanoparticles supported over magnesia is a benign and improved frontier in catalysis. Benzaldehyde is an important industrial feed stock of immense significance in plastic, fine and chemical industries. In this study 1% Au:Pd NPs was synthesized using sol immobilization method over different magnesia (MgO) supports. The composite nanoalloys were characterized using Nitrogen adsorption BET, X- ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The efficacy of Pd:Au/MgO, as a basic solid catalyst, has been tested for benzyl alcohol oxidation. The synthesized composite catalyst Pd:Au/MgO-4 showed high initial activity for freshly prepared catalysts with remarkable activity. This activity declined rapidly with number of runs, which could result from sintering of the support, agglomeration and leaching of active phase. Furthermore, MgO-3 exhibits good stability after 2nd runs, while MgO-5 and MgO-2 revealed marked increasing in activity after the 2nd runs due surface modification and exposure of active sites during reaction.

Biomass burning emits large amounts of phenols, which can partition into cloud/fog drops and aerosol liquid water (ALW) and react to form aqueous secondary organic aerosol (aqSOA). Triplet excited states of organic compounds (C-3*) are likely oxidants, but there are no rate constants with highly substituted phenols that have high Henry’s law constants (K-H) and are likely important in ALW. To address this gap, we investigated the kinetics of six highly substituted phenols with the triplet excited state of 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde. Second-order rate constants at pH 2 are all fast, (2.6-4.6) x 10(9) M-1 s(-1), while values at pH 5 are 2-5 times smaller. Rate constants are reasonably described by a quantitative structure-activity relationship with phenol oxidation potentials, allowing rate constants of other phenols to be predicted. Triplet-phenol kinetics are unaffected by ammonium sulfate, sodium chloride, galactose (a biomass-burning sugar), or Fe(III). In contrast, ammonium nitrate increases the rate of phenol loss by making hydroxyl radicals, while Cu(II) inhibits phenol decay. Mass yields of aqueous SOA from triplet reactions are large and range from 59 to 99%. Calculations using our data along with previous oxidant measurements indicate that phenols with high KH can be an important source of aqSOA in ALW, with 3C* typically the dominant oxidant.

Presently, developing efficient and stable structured heterogenous catalysts with fabulous advantages of excellent ability for heat/mass transfer, facile recovery and separation, and superior stability is of great importance in terms of economic production of chemicals. Here, structured Cu-based film catalysts with novel surface superstructure composed of large quantities of interlaced and nearly vertically grown nanosheets for aqueousphase hydrogenation of furfural toward the production of furfuryl alcohol (FOL) and cyclopentanone (CPO) were successfully fabricated from structured Cu-Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (CuZnAl-LDH) film precursors. As-fabricated structured Cu-based film catalyst possessing a Cu/(Zn + Cu) molar ratio of 4:5 exhibited a superior catalytic performance in the above reaction to other Zn-free and Zn-rich Cu-based film catalysts, as well as pristine CuZnAl-LDH-derived powdered one, due to the synergistic effect between highly dispersive Cu species and favorable surface acidic sites originating from LDH-derived Zn-Al mixed metal oxide (ZnAl-MMO), as well as the presence of abundant Cu-MMO interface within surface nanosheets, being responsible for the enhanced adsorption and activation of reactant and reaction intermediates. Furthermore, due to strong interactions between Cu species and MMO matrix within nanosheets and between surface nanosheets and anodic aluminum oxide/aluminum substrate, the present structured catalyst showed high structural stability and reusability.

Isomerization-based strategies to enable the stereodivergent construction of complex polyenes from geometrically defined alkene linchpins remain conspicuously underdeveloped. Mitigating the thermodynamic constraints inherent to isomerization is further frustrated by the considerations of atom efficiency in idealized low-molecular weight precursors. In this work, we report a general ambiphilic C-3 scaffold that can be isomerized and bidirectionally extended. Predicated on highly efficient triplet energy transfer, the selective isomerization of beta-borylacrylates is contingent on the participation of the boron p orbital in the substrate chromophore. Rotation of the C(sp(2))-B bond by 90 degrees in the product renders re-excitation inefficient and endows directionality. This subtle stereoelectronic gating mechanism enables the stereocontrolled syntheses of well-defined retinoic acid derivatives.

A novel method was used to prepare a magnetic phenylene-based periodic mesoporous organosilica nanocomposite with yolk-shell structure (Fe3O4@YSPMO). The Fe3O4@YSPMO nanomaterial was prepared by using easily accessible pluronic-P123 and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactants under basic conditions. This material was employed for effective immobilization of potassium perruthenate to prepare an Fe3O4@YSPMO@Ru nanocatalyst for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols. The physiochemical properties of the designed Fe3O4@YSPMO@Ru nanocomposite were studied using PXRD, FT-IR, TGA, SEM, TEM, ICP, VSM and XPS analyses. Fe3O4@YSPMO@Ru was effectively employed as a highly recoverable nanocatalyst in the selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols.

Cocoa fermentation is an essential step for chocolate production whereby flavor potential is generated and bitterness and astringency are moderated. To facilitate fermentation research in laboratories geographically distant from cocoa-growing regions, and to simplify and control the fermentation system, a laboratory fermentation model system was developed. The model system consisted of dried unfermented beans, artificial pulp medium, and laboratory incubator to control temperature and aeration. The model system developed in this study showed a succession of key microorganisms including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus fermentum, Acetobacter pasteurianus, and Acetobacter tropicalis. The pH of cocoa beans decreased to an acceptable final pH (4.8). Sugars were well consumed and acetic acid and ethanol were produced during fermentation. Desirable volatile compounds including phenylethyl alcohol, acetoin, 2-phenylethyl acetate, and 3-methylbutyl acetate increased in the cocoa beans during fermentation. In addition, the concentration of polyphenols decreased with fermentation. These results lead to the conclusion that the model system developed in this study was able to simulate the microbial and chemical changes occurring in in situ cocoa fermentation. This laboratory-scale model system will enable systematic examination of the effects of process parameters on fermented bean quality.

Aurone-derived azadienes are well-known four-atom synthons for direct [4 + n] cycloadditions owing to their s-cis conformation as well as the thermodynamically favored aromatization nature of these processes. However, distinct from this common reactivity, herein we report an unusual formal migrative annulation with siloxy alkynes initiated by [2 + 2] cycloaddition. Unexpectedly, this process generates benzofuran-fused nitrogen heterocyclic products with formal substituent migration. This observation is rationalized by less common [2 + 2] cycloaddition followed by 4 pi and 6 pi electrocyclic events. DFT calculations provided support to the proposed mechanism.
