Cu(II) ions were precipitated on nanofiberous magnesium silicate support using hydroxide solution. The texture and characterization of the obtained solids have been investigated by physical methods including XRD, SEM, BET, EDS, XPS, and FT-IR. The catalysts showed medium surface area, highly distributed Cu(II) oxide on the sepiolite fibers. In the liquid-phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol at low temperatures, CuO serves as an active component for the selective production of benzaldehyde. The catalytic activity of the prepared CuO/sepiolite was associated with the dispersion and amount of CuO loading, location and oxidation states of active sites, preparation routes, and reaction variables. A sensitive and reliable method based on environment test chamber coupled with thermal desorption and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (ETC-TD-GC/MS) was developed and validated for the determination of 103 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from mattresses. In the study, two commercial sorbent tubes were compared in terms of adsorption efficiency towards the target analytes. The result illustrated that the multisorbent tubes containing Carbopack C, Carbopack B and Carboxen 1000 had better performance than Tenax TA tubes owing to their large surface area, low capacity for water and high temperature stability, which allowed a wide range of VOCs to be absorbed, especially for VOCs with low boiling points and small molecules. To achieve the optimum conditions for the analysis, several thermal desportion parameters were accurately investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the method showed good linearities, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9982 to 0.9999 and the method detection limits and method quantification limitsfor target compounds in the range of 0.006 similar to 0.561 mu g/m(3) and 0.020 similar to 1.870 mu g/m(3), respectively. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed method on real samples, various mattresses from different manufacturers were analysed. All mattress samples were found to emit VOCs and the values of area-specific emission rate (SERs) for total target compounds were in the range of 90.25 similar to 288.63 mu g/m(2)center dot h. Moreover, the SERs of VOCs were influenced by the type of sponge materials and mattress fabric layers. The study demonstrated that the method is sensitive, accurate and well-suited for the determination of VOCs emitted from mattresses.

A novel series of 7,8-dichlorobenzofuro[3,2-c]quinoline-6,9,10(5H)-triones was obtained regioselectively in good yields. The products were formed by the reactions of the 4-hydroxy-2(1H)-quinolinones with 3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone in tetrahydrofuran as the solvent. Infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance (two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance), mass spectra and elemental analysis were used to elucidate the structures of new compounds.

A series of thiosemicarbazone derivatives was prepared and their anti-tumor activity in vitro was tested. The X-ray investigation performed for compounds T2, T3 and T5 confirmed the synthesis pathway and assumed molecular structures of analyzed thiosemicarbazones. The conformational preferences of the thiosemicarbazone system were characterized using theoretical calculations by AM1 method. Selected compounds were converted into complexes of Cu (II) ions. The effect of complexing on anti-tumor activity has been investigated. The copper(II) complexes, with Schiff bases T1, T10, T12, T13, and T16 have been synthesized and characterized by chemical and elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy and TGA method. Thermal properties of coordination compounds were studied using TG-DTG techniques under dry air atmosphere. G361, A375, and SK-MEL-28 human melanoma cells and BJ human normal fibroblast cells were treated with tested compounds and their cytotoxicity was evaluated with MTT test. The compounds with the most promising anti-tumour activity were then selected and their cytotoxicity was verified with cell cycle analysis and apoptosis/necrosis detection. Additionally, DNA damages in the form of a basic sites presence and the expression of oxidative stress and DNA damage response genes were evaluated. The obtained results indicate that complexation of thiosemicarbazone derivatives with Cu (II) ions improves their antitumor activity against melanoma cells. The observed cytotoxic effect is associated with DNA damage and G2/M phase of cell cycle arrest as well as disorders of the antioxidant enzymes expression.

Simple expressions are presented to determine if a binary system will exhibit a minimum or maximum boiling azeotrope using conventional free energy calculations using molecular simulation or electronic structure calculations in a continuum solvent. The expressions compare the solvation free energy of each component at infinite dilution relative to itself, requiring four total solvation free energy calculations per binary system. The solvation free energies can be related to intermolecular interactions and, therefore, shed insight into why an azeotrope occurs. The application of the expressions is demonstrated for 2366 binary systems using solvation free energies computed using electronic structure calculations in the SM12, SM8, and SMD universal solvent models. The overall success rate for predicting the correct phase behavior was 0.718, 0.711, and 0.685 for SM12, SM8, and SMD, respectively.
