Aldol chemistry is highlighted in many introductory organic chemistry laboratory experiments because it provides synthesis, mechanism, and experimental challenges for students. In the experiment described here, students synthesize dibenzalacetone derivatives by crossed aldol condensation, observe reaction rates using a semiquantitative rubric, and illustrate the connection between reactant structures and reaction rate through their knowledge of the reaction mechanism. By combining class data and working through a guided-inquiry questionnaire, students link reaction rates with nucleophile and electrophile characteristics of the reactant structures. Independent rate determination of the aldol addition step, using UV absorption, confirmed that student rate observations of the overall reaction are a valid approach to learning about structure-function effects.

Metal-free N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysis in D2O medium was elegantly utilised for the synthesis of highly diastereoselective deuterated spiropyran derivatives. Selective deuteration was exclusively achieved on the C5 carbon atom of the pyran ring. Quantum chemical calculations were performed to prove the preferential formation of a single diastereomer from the possible four diastereomers. The scope of NHC organocatalysis in D2O was also extended for the synthesis of deuterated spirooxindole derivative.

Polymer functionality greatly determines many of the key properties of these materials, such as glass-transition temperature, electrical and thermal conductivity, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and processability. Despite the importance of polymer functionality in determining material properties, the synthesis of functional polymers, with well-defined molecular weights and compositions, can still present a significant challenge, with many of the methods related to pre- or postpolymerization modification lacking synthetic scope, or requiring harsh functionalization conditions or transition-metal coupling reactions to install the desired functionality. Perfluoroaromatic systems are promising for the preparation of novel polymer architectures given that they can be readily functionalized using simple nucleophilic chemistries under very mild basic conditions. While promising, these systems have displayed some drawbacks. Previous work has shown that perfluoroaromatics, such as perfluoropyridine, can demonstrate a high degree of chemical reversibility with heteroatom nucleophiles. If the synthetic potential of these systems is to be realized, then a strategy for the rational design of stable monomers must be developed. Herein, we report the design, synthesis, and characterization of a series of unexplored heteroatom-based ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP)-active monomers containing a reactive perfluoropyridine pendent group, which can be used to readily prepare a wide variety of aryl ether-functionalized polymers, using both pre- and postpolymerization modification strategies. We also establish a direct connection between the dihedral angle of the monomer and its propensity to undergo reversible addition reactions, establishing functional criteria for the design of pre- and postmodifiable systems.

Lignin from the Chinese quince (Chaenomeles sinensis) fruit offers a promising source of natural antioxidant for industrial applications. However, the utilization of Chinese quince fruit lignin is restricted by its inhomogeneous nature. Accordingly, Chinese quince fruit lignin was sequentially fractionated with organic solvents of increasing dissolving capacity to prepare homogeneous lignin fractions. The GPC (gel permeation chromatography) results showed that the molecular weights of lignin fractions increased from dichloromethane fraction to dioxane/water fraction. The five lignin fractions were also compared with respect to yield, carbohydrate content, thermal stability, inter-unit linkages, S/G ratios, and phenolic OH content. Among the five fractions, the ethyl acetate fraction showed a lower proportion of p-o-tv linkages (48.4%), the highest thermal stability, the highest phenolic OH content (2.8 mmol/g), and the highest DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging index and reducing power. The high antioxidant performance of the ethyl acetate fraction implies that it can be used as a natural antioxidant. This study shows that sequential solvent fractionation of lignin can produce homogeneous fractions with enhanced antioxidant performance. In addition, it demonstrates that Chinese quince fruits are a potentially valuable natural resource.

The Name is 4′-Hydroxyacetophenone. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of 99-93-4.

Purpose Aiming to exploit the remediation of olive cake and leaves, a comparative study between these extracts from the same trees has been carried out to explore them as a source of bioactive compounds with added value. Methods Olive cake (OCE) and leaf (OLE) methanolic extracts were chemically characterized by UPLC-QTOF-MS, and tested for their in vitro antimicrobial activity using a broth microdilution method. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH scavenging, ferric reducing-antioxidant power and iron chelation assays. Results Our results demonstrated that Gram-positive bacteria were more sensitive to the extracts tested than Gram-negative bacteria, with the exception of Yersinia enterocolitica and Campylobacter jejuni. OLE have higher amounts of ash, carbohydrates, total phenolic content and flavonoids than OCE. UPLC-ESI-TOF-MS allowed the putative identification of 48 and 45 compounds in OLE and OCE, respectively, with three newly identified compounds in OLE. OLE had the highest antioxidant activity based on DPPH, ferrozin and FRP. Conclusion This study provides novel information on the presence of bioactive compounds, antioxidant and antibacterial capacity of Olea europaea L. leaf and cake extracts, which can lead to the use of these by-products as sources of natural-based bioactive compounds suitable for numerous applications. Apios americana Medik, a native American plant has potential as a commercially viable Northern European-grown motcrop, mainly due to its resistance to extreme climate and nutritional quality. Analysis of A. americana sourced from two UK sites; South (51.4690 degrees N, 1.1150 degrees W) and North (55.9661 degrees N, 3.2063 degrees W) showed that the tubers were a complete source of amino acids (UPLC-TUV analysis), were rich in protein (15.0 +/- 0.0160 and 17.3 +/- 0.0779%; Vario Max CN analysis), fibre (total non-starch polysaccharides, 10.4 +/- 0.570 and 10.6 +/- 0.280%; GC analysis) and micronutrients (calcium, manganese, iron, zinc, molybdenum, potassium and phosphorus; ICP-MS analysis). Apios americana tubers were also rich in bioactive phytochemicals. From the 156 plant metabolites measured using LC-MS/MS analysis, genistein was the major phytophenol in both the Southern- and Northern UK tubers (259 +/- 12.2 mg Kg(-1) and 356 +/- 29.9 mg Kg(-1) respectively); the peel having similar phytochemical profiles. The protein and fibre content of the leaves (17.3 +/- 0.0434% and 11.7 0.0445%) and rhizomes (18.4 +/- 0.0152% and 13.5 +/- 0.590%) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the tubers. The leaves were also a good source of anthocyanins; delphinidin and cyanidin (840 +/- 137 and 3934 +/- 176 mg Kg(-1) respectively). Cultivation of A. americana as a high-protein staple-crop has enormous potential in Northern European countries for human nutrition, diet diversification, and use in livestock diets. A series of bis(phosphinite) (POCOP) pincer ligated nickel complexes, [2,6-(tBu(2)PO)(2)C6H3]NiX (X = SH, 1; SCH2Ph, 2; SPh, 3; NCS, 4; N-3, 5), were used to catalyse the hydrosilylation of aldehydes. It was found that both complexes 1 and 2 are active in catalysing the hydrosilylation of aldehydes with phenylsilane and complex 1 is comparatively more active. The expected alcohols were isolated in good to excellent yields after basic hydrolysis of the resultant hydrosilylation products. However, no reaction was observed when complex 3 or 4 or 5 was used as the catalyst. The results are consistent with complexes 1 and 2 serving as catalyst precursors, which generate the corresponding nickel hydride complex [2,6-(tBu(2)PO)(2)C6H3]NiH in situ, and the nickel hydride complex is the active species that catalyses this hydrosilylation process. The in situ generation of the nickel hydride species was supported by both experimental results and DFT calculation.
