Poly(ferric 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate) (PFAMPS) was prepared via the reaction of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) and Fe(OH)(3). PFAMPS was used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Biginelli reaction of aldehyde, ethyl acetoacetate, and urea to synthesize 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones with yields of 70-87%. PFAMPS can be recycled six times without significant loss in catalytic activity. For comparison, ferric lignosulfonate (FLSA), ferric cellulose sulfonate (FCSA), ferric starch sulfonate (FSSA), and ferric 732 cation exchange resin (FACER) were used as catalysts of the Biginelli reaction. It was shown that the catalytic activities of recycled FLSA, FCSA, FSSA, and FACER significantly decreased after two reactions. Fe(3+)in the polymer sulfonates acted as the catalyst for the Biginelli reaction. PFAMPS was the chelate, where the action between Fe(3+)and the poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate) matrix was strong, and Fe(3+)lost little from the PFAMPS. However, significant Fe(3+)loss was observed in the FLSA, FCSA, FSSA and FACER polymer matrices after reuse.

A series of twenty new chloropyrazine conjugated benzothiazepines (22-41) have been synthesized with 58%-95% yields. The compounds were characterized by using different spectroscopic techniques including FT-IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The synthesized compounds (22-41) and their precursor chalcones (2-21) were evaluated for antitubercular and cytotoxic activities. Additionally, compounds 22-41 were also tested for antimicrobial activity. Among the chalcone series (2-21), compounds 7 and 14 showed significant antitubercular activities (MICs 25.51 and 23.89 mu M, respectively), whereas among benzothiazepines (22-41), compounds 27 and 34 displayed significant antimicrobial (MICs 38.02 mu M, 19.01 mu M) and antitubercular (MIC 18.10 mu M) activities. Compounds 7 and 41 displayed cytotoxic activities with IC50 of 46.03 +/- 1 and 35.10 +/- 2 mu M respectively. All the compounds were evaluated for cytotoxic activity on normal human liver cell lines (L02) and found to be relatively less selective towards this cell line. The most active compounds identified through this study could be considered as potential leads for the development of drugs with possible antimicrobial, antitubercular, and cytotoxic activities. Lignin from the Chinese quince (Chaenomeles sinensis) fruit offers a promising source of natural antioxidant for industrial applications. However, the utilization of Chinese quince fruit lignin is restricted by its inhomogeneous nature. Accordingly, Chinese quince fruit lignin was sequentially fractionated with organic solvents of increasing dissolving capacity to prepare homogeneous lignin fractions. The GPC (gel permeation chromatography) results showed that the molecular weights of lignin fractions increased from dichloromethane fraction to dioxane/water fraction. The five lignin fractions were also compared with respect to yield, carbohydrate content, thermal stability, inter-unit linkages, S/G ratios, and phenolic OH content. Among the five fractions, the ethyl acetate fraction showed a lower proportion of p-o-tv linkages (48.4%), the highest thermal stability, the highest phenolic OH content (2.8 mmol/g), and the highest DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging index and reducing power. The high antioxidant performance of the ethyl acetate fraction implies that it can be used as a natural antioxidant. This study shows that sequential solvent fractionation of lignin can produce homogeneous fractions with enhanced antioxidant performance. In addition, it demonstrates that Chinese quince fruits are a potentially valuable natural resource.

Improper formation or remodeling of the pharyngeal arch arteries (PAAs) 3, 4, and 6 contribute to some of the most severe forms of congenital heart disease. To study the formation of PAAs, we developed a protocol using whole-mount immunofluorescence coupled with benzyl alcohol/benzyl benzoate (BABB) tissue clearing, and confocal microscopy. This allows for the visualization of the pharyngeal arch endothelium at a fine cellular resolution as well as the 3D connectivity of the vasculature. Using software, we have established a protocol to quantify the number of endothelial cells (ECs) in PAAs, as well as the number of ECs within the vascular plexus surrounding the PAAs within pharyngeal arches 3, 4, and 6. When applied to the whole embryo, this methodology provides a comprehensive visualization and quantitative analysis of embryonic vasculature.

In the current study, a new series of pyrazole derivatives4a-d,5a-dand6a-dpossessing 1,5,10,10a-tetrahydrobenzo[g]quinoline-3-carbonitrile moiety were synthesized by treating chalcones (3a-d) with hydrazine monohydrate/acetic anhydride, hydrazine monohydrate/formic acid and 4-chlorophenylhydrazine in ethanol, respectively. These reactions proceeded smoothly with satisfactory yields, and the obtained compounds were characterized using FTIR,H-1-NMR,C-13-NMR and elemental analyses. All the synthesized compounds were subjected to antibacterial activity againstBacillus subtilis,Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli, andPseudomonas aeruginosabacteria and molecular docking studies. The antibacterial studies showed that all compounds exhibited good to excellent antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial strains. The structure-activity relationship studies revealed that the compounds3b,4b,5band6bbearing a chlorine atom at the para position of the phenyl group attached to pyrazole moiety in displayed the highest antibacterial activity against all the tested bacteria exceeding the standard drug ampicillin. Moreover, the molecular docking results showed that the highest scores docking have been obtained from the most active antibacterial compounds3b,3d,4b,4d,4c,5band6bwith good energy binding score within the active site of topoisomerase II DNA gyrase enzymes (PDB ID: 2XCS), suggesting that they can act by the inhibition of DNA replication. These compounds are auspicious candidates as antibacterial agents that would deserve further investigations.

In this study, poplar wood chips were gasified in sub-and supercritical water as biomass feedstock. Hydrothermal gasification experiments were performed to examine how the reaction temperature and different type of catalysts influence conversion efficiency. The effectiveness of commercially available [alkali catalyst; KOH], naturally available [mineral catalysts; Trona [Na-3(CO3)(HCO3)center dot 2H(2)O], Dolomite [CaMg(CO3)(2)] and Borax [Na2B4O7 center dot 10H(2)O] and laboratory-prepared catalysts [metal-impregnated activated carbons; (Ni/AC) and (Ru/AC)] have been demonstrated so as to shift the product distribution toward more desirable compounds. Gaseous compound yield was increased from 29.7% to 79.3% with respect to increasing temperature while liquid compound yield decreased from 27.6% to 1.1% and solid residue from 38.0% to 15.6%. The highest H-2 (20.1 mol/kg C in poplar) and CH4 (12.7 mol/kg C in poplar) yields were obtained with Ru/AC catalyst. Six rhenium(I) kappa N-3-dicarbonyl complexes with 4′-(4-substituted phenyl)terpyridine ligands were evaluated in their ground and excited states. These complexes, bearing substituents of different electron-donating strengths-from CN to NMe2- were studied by a combination of transient IR (TRIR), electrochemistry, and IR spectroelectrochemistry, as well as time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). They exhibit panchromatic absorption and can act as stronger photoreductants than their tricarbonyl counterparts. The ground- and excited-state potentials, absorption maxima, and lifetimes (250-750 ps) of these complexes correlate well with the Hammett sigma(p) substituent constants, showing the systematic effect of remote substitution in the ligand framework. TRIR spectroscopy allowed us to assign the lowest singlet and triplet excited states to a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) character. This result contrasts our previous report on analogous kappa N-2-tricarbonyl complexes, where remote substitution switched the character from MLCT to intraligand charge transfer. With the help of TD-DFT calculations, we dissect the geometric and electronic effects of coordination of the third pyridine, local symmetries, and increasing conjugation length. These results give valuable insights for the design of complexes with long-lived triplet excited states and enhanced absorption throughout the visible spectrum, while showcasing the boundaries of the excited-state switching strategy via remote substitution.

An operationally simple, one-pot multicomponent reaction has been developed for the assembly of pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine and pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine derivatives (4a-4am) in excellent yields (92-94%) with high purity. The reactions were easy to perform simply by mixing of electron-rich amino heterocycles (including aminouracils and aminopyrazoles), aldehyde, and acyl acetonitrile in the presence of [Et3NH][HSO4] under solvent-free conditions. The remarkable feature of the present approach is that the ionic liquid possesses dual solvent-catalytic engineering capability. Results of this study revealed that 1 mmol of the ionic liquid catalyst under solvent-free conditions at 60 degrees C is the best reaction parameter for the construction of fused pyridine and pyrimidine derivatives in excellent yields. The present methodology showed good results under gram-scale conditions, thereby indicating its applicability in industrial as well as academic settings in the near future.
