The focus of present study is on Codium bursa collected from the Adriatic Sea. C. bursa volatiles were identified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-FID; GC-MS) after headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME), hydrodistillation (HD), and supercritical CO2 extraction (SC-CO2). The headspace composition of dried (HS-D) and fresh (HS-F) C. bursa was remarkably different. Dimethyl sulfide, the major HS-F compound was present in HS-D only as a minor constituent and heptadecane percentage was raised in HS-D. The distillate of fresh C. bursa contained heptadecane and docosane among the major compounds. After air-drying, a significantly different composition of the volatile oil was obtained with (E)-phytol as the predominant compound. It was also found in SC-CO2 extract of freeze-dried C. bursa (FD-CB) as the major constituent. Loliolide (3.51%) was only identified in SC-CO2 extract. Fatty acids were determined from FD-CB after derivatisation as methyl esters by GC-FID. The most dominant acids were palmitic (25.4%), oleic (36.5%), linoleic (11.6%), and stearic (9.0%). FD-CB H2O extract exhibited better antifungal effects against Fusarium spp., while dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extract was better for the inhibition of Penicillium expansum, Aspergillus flavus, and Rhizophus spp. The extracts showed relatively good antifungal activity, especially against P. expansum (for DMSO extract MIC50 was at 50 mu g/mL).

In this study, we aimed to investigate the photodiode properties of the chalcone substitutedphthalocyanine complex due to the important physical properties of the phthalocyanine and chalcone compounds. For this purpose, in the first step, a heterocyclic chalcone compound (HC) bearing a pyridine and hydroxyl group was obtained from the reaction of 40-hydroxyacetophenone with pyridine-3 aldehyde. In the second step, the chalcone-substituted phthalonitrile compound (HCA) was obtained by interacted 4-nitroftalonitrile with the compound HC in the presence of K2CO3 in DMF in an argon atmosphere. The new chalcone substituted metallo-phthalocyanine (HCA-Co) was synthesized from the reaction of compound HCA with Co (II) acetate according to heating of solid phase method under an inert atmosphere. The structure of HC and HCA-Co were fully characterized by using H-1, and C-13-APT NMR, FTIR, elemental analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy. The HCP-Co thin-film planar heterojunction diode was prepared. The organic layer was deposited onto the p-Si substrate to obtain an Al/p-si/phthalocyanine(HCP-Co)/Al diode. The current (I)voltage (V) characteristics of heterojunction diode was measured under dark and illuminated conditions (20-100 mW/cm(2)) at room temperature. The electrical characteristics of the device were measured. The ideal factor value was found to be 5.20 and according to this value, the diode exhibits non-ideal behavior. The frequency dependence of capacitance and the role of interface states were examined. The results showed that chalcone substituted metallo-phthalocyanine has a photodiode and photocapacitor characteristic. Therefore, chalcone-linked metallo-phthalocyanine can be applied in solar tracking systems. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Kinases and phosphatases are key enzymes in cell signal transduction pathways. Imbalances in these enzymes have been linked to numerous disease states ranging from cancer to diabetes to autoimmune disorders. The two isoforms (IFA and IFB) of Low Molecular Weight Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (LMW-PTP) appear to play a role in these diseases. Pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (PLP) has been shown to act as a potent but, impractical micromolar inhibitor for both isoforms. In this study, a series of non-hydrolysable phosphonate analogs of PLP were designed, synthesized and tested against the two isoforms of LMW-PTP. Assay results demonstrated that the best inhibitor for both isoforms was compound 5 with a K-is of 1.84 mu M (IFA) and 15.6 mu M (IFB). The most selective inhibitor was compound 16, with a selectivity of roughly 370-fold for IFA over IFB.

The facilitation of redox-neutral reactions by electrochemical injection of holes and electrons, also known as electrochemical catalysis, is a little explored approach that has the potential to expand the scope of electrosynthesis immensely. To systematically improve existing protocols and to pave the way toward new developments, a better understanding of the underlying principles is crucial. In this context, we have studied the Newman-Kwart rearrangement of O-arylthiocarbamates to the corresponding S-aryl derivatives, the key step in the synthesis of thiophenols from the corresponding phenols. This transformation is a particularly useful example because the conventional method requires temperatures up to 300 degrees C, whereas electrochemical catalysis facilitates the reaction at room temperature. A combined experimental-quantum chemical approach revealed several reaction channels and rendered an explanation for the relationship between the structure and reactivity. Furthermore, it is shown how rapid cyclic voltammetry measurements can serve as a tool to predict the feasibility for specific substrates. The study also revealed distinct parallels to photoredox-catalyzed reactions, in which back-electron transfer and chain propagation are competing pathways.

It is desirable but challenging to design efficient micro-/nanoreactors for chemical reactions. In this study, we have fabricated mesoporous double-shelled hollow microreactors composed of N-doped-C-coated ultrafine In2O3 nanoparticles [N-C/In2O3 HD (hollow dodecahedron)] by the thermolysis of a dodecahedral In-based framework in Ar atmosphere. The obtained N-C/In2O3 HD exhibited excellent activity in the photocatalytic oxidative hydroxylation of a series of arylboronic acid substrates. This property can be attributed to its enhanced optical absorption and efficient separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, imparted by the unique structure and uniformly coated N-doped C layers. Furthermore, we found O-2(.-) to be the critical active species in the process of photocatalytic oxidative hydroxylation of arylboronic acids, and the formation mechanism of this radical is also proposed. Theoretical calculations further confirmed that the N-doped C layer serves as an electron acceptor and revealed the microscopic charge-carrier migration path through the In2O3/N-doped graphite interfaces. Thus, photo-generated electrons from hybrid states of In2O3, composed of In 5s and 2p orbitals, are transferred into the hybrid states of N-doped graphite, composed of C 2p and N 2p orbitals. The present study may be helpful for understanding and designing carbon-based micro-/nanoreactors for photocatalytic reactions, and may also be useful for investigating related micro-/nanoreactors.

A fast and facile synthesis of TiO2- Al2O3 nanocomposite based on Microwave (MW) irradiation is presented. The nanocomposite development were corroborated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX),and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR)analysis. The XPS analyzed results affirmed that elements on the nanocomposite surface were Al and O. Electrochemical properties of the as prepared TiO2-Al2O3 nanocomposites were studied thoroughly to determine the sensing activity of the nanocomposites towards 3,4-Diaminotoluene (3,4-DAT) which is a harmful or hazardous chemical using I-V method. Selective electrochemical sensor using TiO2-Al2O3 nanocomposite onto glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was assembled and the details electrochemical investigation of 3,4-Diaminotoluene (3,4-DAT) was developed. It was calibrated using in range of 3,4-DAT concentration and data were plotted as current versus concentration. Considering the highest linearity (r(2)=0.99)of calibrated range, the linear dynamic range (1.0 pM similar to 1.0 mu M) was found. Employing the slope of calibration curve, the sensitivity (0.5024×10(3) mu A mu M(-1)cm(-3)) and detection limit (0.19 +/- 0.01 pM) were estimated. Besides this, the selective 3,4-DAT chemical sensor was shown long-term stability and precious reproducibility with very short response time without any interference effect.
