Porous crystals with well-defined active metal centers on the pore surface have high potential as heterogeneous metal catalysts. We have recently demonstrated that a porous molecular crystal, metal-macrocycle framework (MMF), catalyzes olefin migration reactions by photoactivation of its (PdCl2)-Cl-II moieties exposed on the crystalline channel surface. Herein we report a mechanistic study of the photoinduced olefin migration reactions at the Pd-II active centers of MMF. Several experiments, including a deuterium scrambling study, revealed that olefin migration is catalyzed via an alkyl mechanism by in situ generated Pd-H species on the channel surface during photoirradiation. This proposed mechanism was further supported by DFT and ONIOM calculations.

High yield 3-hydroxy benzaldehyde-N-methyl 4-stilbazolium tosylate (3-HBST) was synthesized by optimizing the reaction temperature. High-quality bulk crystals of 3-HBST were grown by slow evaporation technique and spontaneous nucleation method, respectively. The crystal structure of 3-HBST was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and belongs to monoclinic system. The defects of the 3-HBST crystals were observed by the synchrotron radiation X-ray topography. 3-HBST crystal remains stable until 305 degrees C, with a melting point of 214.1 degrees C from the TG-DTG and DSC techniques. The dielectric constant of 3-HBST crystal was also studied. The grown crystal had good optical transparency and the optical transmittance was investigated by UV-vis-NIR spectral analysis. Photoluminescence (PL) indicated green emission occurred at 478 nm. Based on the growth technical analysis and performance parameters measurements, 3-HBST crystal was verified to be a promising organic nonlinear optical crystal.

A facile synthesis of dehydroepiandrosterones derived by C-16 spiro-pyrrolidine and their cytotoxic evaluation are reported. Seven derivatives, 3a-3g, were prepared by the [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of the 16-arylidene dehydroepiandrosterone and the azomethine ylide, where the azomethine ylide was generated in situ from 11H-indeno[1,2-b]quinoxalin-11-one and sarcosine. Their cytotoxicity was evaluated on brine shrimp assay and the bioactivities represented by LC50 values were found in the range of 6.19-27.2 mu g/mL. Among them, the activities of 3d and 3g are the best, as manifested by LC50 values less than 10 mu g/mL. All products were confirmed by NMR, HR MS and X-ray analysis.

A simple and efficient synthesis of novel 6,6 ‘-(arylmethylene)bis(benzo[a]phenazin-5-ol) derivatives has been developed via a sequential one-pot, two-step, pseudo-five-component tandem reaction starting from 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione, o-phenylenediamine, and aromatic aldehydes in the presence of 2-aminopyridine as co-catalyst and p-TsOH as catalyst at 90 degrees C under solvent-free conditions. A series of amides based on (2S)-cyanopyrrolidine and alpha, beta-unsaturated aryl- and hetarylcarboxylic acids have been synthesized. The dependence of the hypoglycemic activity of compounds on the structure of the aromatic fragment has been studied in the oral glucose tolerance test in mice. Amides based on (E)-3-phenylprop-2-enoic and (E)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-enoic acids and (2S)-cyanopyrrolidine have been shown to significantly reduce blood glucose levels in mice. The observed hypoglycemic effect at a dose of 10 mg/kg is comparable to the effect of hypoglycemic drug vildagliptin.

Biomass is the most abundant renewable resource on earth and developing high-performance nonprecious selective hydrogenation (SH) catalysts will enable the use of biomass to replace rapidly diminishing fossil resources. This work utilizes ZIF-67-derived nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes to confine Co nanoparticles (NPs) with Co-N-x active sites as a high-performance SH catalyst. The confined Co NPs with Co-N-x exhibit excellent catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability toward a wide range of biomass-derived compounds. Such active sites can selectively hydrogenate aldehyde, ketone, carboxyl, and nitro groups of biomass-derived compounds into value-added fine chemicals with 100% selectivity. The reported approach could be adopted to create other forms of catalytically active sites from other nonprecious metals.

Benzodiazepines derivatives are nitrogen heterocyclic compounds that have various industrial, synthetic, and medicinal applications. Therefore, its potential fully justifies every effort towards the improvement of new, selective, and competent production of these heterocyclic compounds. The novelty of this study encompasses the synthesis of new hydroxylated analogs of 1,5-benzodiazepine together with the evaluation of their biological potential as antioxidants and antifungals candidates. Additionally, the reported antifungal activity against fungi of the Sporothrix schenckii complex inaugurates an unprecedented property for this class of compounds. The results of biological activities assays suggest that the novel 2,7-dimethyl-2,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3-dihydro1H-1,5-benzodiazepine possesses a high antifungal activity against all fungal strains evaluated of the Sporothrix genus and outstanding total antioxidant capacity. Besides, in silico studies have evidenced that the hydroxylated derivatives have the best aqueous solubility and cell permeability profile, which makes them superior in comparison with the commercial antifungal itraconazole, a drug commonly used in the treatment of sporotrichosis.

A green and efficient method for the synthesis of substituted benzimidazoles has been developed in a two-step continuous flow system. Enzymatic electrochemical cascade reactions between aromatic alcohols and o-phenylenediamines are reported. The reaction was performed under mild reaction conditions with air as the green oxidant and oxidase as the biocatalyst. Alcohol oxidation and substituted benzimidazole formation, which are usually accomplished separately, were integrated into a single operation. A scale up experiment was completed successfully in a continuous flow system which offers an industrially relevant, practical and efficient method.
