Hydrothermal treatment of gadolinium nitrate and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) afforded a new metal-organic framework compound, {[Gd-4(NDC)(6)(H2O)(6)]center dot 2H(2)O}n(1). Compound 1 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, therrmogravimetric analysis (TGA) and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. It is crystallized in the monoclinic system with the P2(1)/n space group. Four crystallographically distinct Gd (III) centres are interconnected with each other through bridged carboxylato oxygen atoms and water molecules to form tetranuclear secondary building units, which are further connected through the carboxylato ligand and the network propagates along the crystallographic ac plane to form a 2D structure. Subsequent reinforcement from the remaining carboxylato oxygen atoms gives rise to a robust 3D framework structure. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrates that compound 1 is fairly stable after dehydration under a nitrogen atmosphere. Notably, compound 1 is capable of catalyzing the O-arylation reaction efficiently between substituted phenols and bromoarene under heterogeneous conditions at 80 degrees C to afford unsymmetrical diarylethers. A new and straightforward synthesis of the C-1-C-7 core fragment of nhatrangin A was achieved in 14 steps from achiral 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde, without the need of chiral reagents or enzymatic resolution to introduce the chiral centers. The key asymmetric steps include in particular a highly enantioselective organocatalyzed Michael addition on an aryl vinyl ketone, a Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation and a subsequent regioselective ring opening of the resulting chiral epoxide. This work represents the first formal enantioselective synthesis of nhatrangin A.

Silver nanoparticles were fabricated in the presence and absence of light with silver nitrate and aqueous extract of Prunus cerasifera leaf via facile and one-pot green method. P. cerasifera leaf extract reduced and stabilized the nanoparticles with phytometabolites expunging the need for addition of external reducing agents. Optimized silver nanoparticle syntheses was done with variations in leaf extract concentration, time, temperature, and molarity for deciphering the photocatalytic, antifungal, and antibacterial potential of synthesized nanoparticles. Optical, compositional, and morphological analyses of the synthesized nanoparticles were done by UV-visible spectrometry (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed firstly through UV-Vis by exhibition of peaks with 400-450 nm. FTIR confirmed the presence of major organic groups responsible for reduction of nanoparticles. AFM confirmed the spherical morphology of the synthesized nanoparticles with remarkable dispersion without any agglomeration. Phytochemical analysis for P. cerasifera leaf metabolites was done by GC-MS. Spherical nanoparticles having a size range of 57-144 nm were obtained with face-centered cubic crystals. The average crystallite size obtained from XRD spectra was 2.34 nm. Enhanced photocatalytic first-order kinetics were obtained for persistent organic pollutants, i.e., crystal violet, methylene blue, and malachite green (R-2 = 0.99, 0.99, 0.98) in less than 15 min. Biomedical and agricultural significance as an antibiotic drug and utilization as a fungicides substitute was explored against nine resistant microbes. Statistically significant variations were analyzed via one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Kruskal-Wallis test and specific multi comparison tests. Active to highly active inhibition zones manifested the use of biogenic silver nanoparticles as potential candidate for applications in biological arenas and as environmental remediators.

X-ray-responsive nanocarriers for anticancer drug delivery have shown great promise for enhancing the efficacy of chemoradiotherapy. A critical challenge remains for development of such radiation-controlled drug delivery systems (DDSs), which is to minimize the required X-ray dose for triggering the cargo release. Herein, we design and fabricate an effective DDS based on diselenide block copolymers (as nanocarrier), which can be triggered to release their cargo with a reduced radiation dose of 2 Gy due to their sensitivity to both X-ray and the high level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the microenvironment of cancer cells. The underlying molecular mechanism is further illustrated by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR) experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In vivo experiments on tumor-bearing mice validated that the loaded drugs are effectively delivered to the tumor site and exert remarkable antitumor effects (minimum tumor volume/weight) along with X-ray. Furthermore, the diselenide nanocarriers exhibit no noticeable cytotoxicity. These findings provide new insights for the de novo design of radiation-controlled DDSs for cancer chemoradiotherapy.

Hierarchical UiO-66 and its amino-analogue UiO-66-NH2 nanocrystals were successfully synthesized by introducing a suitable amount of water into the conventional synthesis of UiO-66/UiO-66-NH2 without the need for a chelating agent, surfactant or aging. The hierarchical porous qualities and particle sizes of the UiO-66/UiO-66-NH2 products can be facilely tuned by the amounts of water. Hierarchical UiO-66/UiO-66-NH2 nanocrystals exhibited significantly enhanced adsorption capacity for dyes and catalytic activity in esterification/Knoevenagel reactions compared to the microporous UiO-66/UiO-66-NH2. This facile synthetic strategy offers a new alternative way to prepare UiO materials with the combination of hierarchical and functional property.

Background The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet improves blood pressure in nonpregnant populations. We hypothesized that adherence to the DASH diet during pregnancy improves hemodynamic adaptations, leading to a lower risk of gestational hypertensive disorders. Methods and Results We examined whether the DASH diet score was associated with blood pressure, placental hemodynamics, and gestational hypertensive disorders in a population-based cohort study among 3414 Dutch women. We assessed DASH score using food-frequency questionnaires. We measured blood pressure in early-, mid-, and late pregnancy (medians, 95% range: 12.9 [9.8-17.9], 20.4 [16.6-23.2], 30.2 [28.6-32.6] weeks gestation, respectively), and placental hemodynamics in mid- and late pregnancy (medians, 95% range: 20.5 [18.7-23.1], 30.4 [28.5-32.8] weeks gestation, respectively). Information on gestational hypertensive disorders was obtained from medical records. Lower DASH score quartiles were associated with a higher mid pregnancy diastolic blood pressure, compared with the highest quartile (P<0.05). No associations were present for early- and late pregnancy diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure throughout pregnancy. Compared with the highest DASH score quartile, the lower DASH score quartiles were associated with a higher mid- and late pregnancy umbilical artery pulsatility index (P <= 0.05) but not with uterine artery resistance index. No associations with gestational hypertensive disorders were present. Conclusions A higher DASH diet score is associated with lower mid pregnancy diastolic blood pressure and mid- and late pregnancy fetoplacental vascular function but not with uteroplacental vascular function or gestational hypertensive disorders within a low-risk population. Further studies need to assess whether the effects of the DASH diet on gestational hemodynamic adaptations are more pronounced among higher-risk populations. Halocarbons have tremendous significance for the chemical industry. Arylchlorides and arylbromides are typically prepared via Friedel-Crafts reaction, using oxidative halogenation or employing halogen transfer agents, such as N-chloro- and N-bromosuccineimide. Herein, we show that K-PHI, a photocatalyst of the carbon nitride family, can easily photooxidize halide anions (Cl- Br- ) in aqueous media to promote oxidative halogenation of electron rich aromatic compounds. The technique is convenient, safe and gives the haloaromatic products with excellent yields from non-harmful starting reagents in the most sustainable fashion. We show that a solution of NaCl, mimicking seawater, can be used as a reagent for photochlorination.

A new [4+1]-annulation of in situ generated heterocyclic azine-aldimines with beta-keto sulfoxonium ylides has been developed. The reaction constructs N-fused imidazole rings. In the reaction, the ylides play a dual-functional role of a nucleophilic 1,1-dipolar one-carbon synthon and a source of an internal oxidant, dimethyl sulfoxide, that promotes in situ dehydrogenation to product scaffolds. The method enables access to imidazo-pyridine, pyrazine, and pyrimidine heteroaromatics.

The development of robust electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of guaiacol and related lignin model monomers is necessary for the stabilization or upgrading of bio-oil. Additionally, the efficiency of biomass conversion to bio-oil products remains below the minimum requirements for its implementation at scale. Herein, a PtNiB/CMK-3 catalyst with pronounced ECH performance in the conversion of guaiacol and related model lignin monomers to bio-oil under optimally mild conditions, through a modulation strategy that modified the electronic structure of PtNi via boron alloying, is prepared. Notably, the optimized PtNiB/CMK-3 exhibited an inspiring high faradaic efficiency of 86.2%, which is significantly higher (13.7 times) than that of the PtNi/CMK-3 without B-doping (6.3%). Experimental results and theoretical calculations showed that the B-doping optimized the PtNiB alloy surface electron structure, simultaneously promoting substrate and intermediate adsorption and the ECH process. In addition, the uniform dispersion of PtNiB nanoparticles embedded within the mesoporous channels of CMK-3 ensures an enhanced utilization efficiency, leading to improvements in stability and bio-oil product generation. The lab-scale ECH experiment of guaiacol also certified the scale-up potential. This work opens a promising avenue to the rational design of advanced and highly efficient electrocatalysts for biomass upgrading.
