An efficient method for the dehydrogenative coupling of silanes with alcohols under photocatalysis was developed. The reaction proceeded in the presence of Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 (0.5 mol%) under visible light irradiation in acetonitrile at room temperature. A highly efficient and modular synthesis of nematode pheromone ascarosides was developed, which highlights a 4-step scalable synthesis of the common intermediate 10 in 23% yield from commercially available l-rhamnose by using orthoesterification/benzylation/orthoester rearrangement as the key step. Six diverse ascarosides were synthesized accordingly. Notably, biological investigations revealed that ascr#1 and ascr#18 treatment resulted in enhanced callose accumulation in Arabidopsis leaves. And ascr#18 also increased the expression of defense-related genes such as PR1, PDF1.2, LOX2 and AOS, which might contribute to the enhanced plant defense responses. This study not only allows a facile access to 1-O, 2-O, and 4-O substituted ascarosides, but also provides valuable insights into their biological activities in inducing plant defense response, as well as their mode of action.

Benzaldehyde byproduct is an imperative intermediate in the production of fine chemicals and additives. Tuning selectivity to benzaldehyde is therefore critical in alcohol oxidation reactions at the industrial level. Herein, we report a simple but innovative method for the synthesis of palladium hydride and nickel palladium hydride nanodendrites with controllable morphology, high stability, and excellent catalytic activity. The synthesized dendrites can maintain the palladium hydride phase even after their use in the chosen catalytic reaction. Remarkably, the high surface area morphology and unique interaction between nickel-rich surface and palladium hydride (-phase) of these nanodendrites are translated in an enhanced catalytic activity for benzyl alcohol oxidation reaction. Our Ni/PdH0.43 nanodendrites demonstrated a high selectivity towards benzaldehyde of about 92.0% with a conversion rate of 95.4%, showing higher catalytic selectivity than their PdH0.43 counterparts and commercial Pd/C. The present study opens the door for further exploration of metal/metal-hydride nanostructures as next-generation catalytic materials.

In recent years, magnetically active CuFe2O4 nanoparticles have been gaining significant interest in the field of heterogeneous catalysis as those can be easily prepared and effortlessly recovered from a reaction system. Here, we are reporting our work on cascade syntheses of 1,3-dimethyl-6-nitro-5-arylpyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-diones starting from 6-[(dimethylamino)methylene-amino]-1,3-dimethyluracil, aromatic aldehydes and nitromethane using magnetically active CuFe2O4 catalyst system under microwave irradiation and solvent-less condition. The current methodology is a valued addition to the existing procedures of 5-arylpyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines syntheses making best use of the diene behavior of 6-[(dimethylamino)methylene-amino]-1,3-dimethyluracil. However, heterogeneous catalysis has been employed for the first time to do the syntheses by carrying out [4 + 2]cycloaddition reaction between 6-[(dimethylamino)methylene-amino]-1,3-dimethyluracil and in situ generated 2-(2-nitrovinyl)arenes/heteroarenes. The methodology is highly time-economic, and along with other features like easy recovery and good reusability of the catalyst, simple operating procedure, wide substrate scope, and good to excellent product yield, it offers the chemists a reaction protocol worth trying for the syntheses of 1,3-dimethyl-6-nitro-5-arylpyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-diones. While laboratory prepared catalyst system was characterized using FT-IR, XRD, SEM-EDX, VSM, XPS and TEM analysis, all the synthesized compounds have been characterized using H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and HRMS.

In this study, we present a versatile and easy procedure for modifying a cobalt ferrite nanoparticle step by step. A new nanocatalyst was prepared via Cu(II)immobilized onto CoFe2O4@HT@Imine. The catalyst was fully characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analyses. The current procedure as a green protocol offers benefits including a simple operational method, an excellent yield of products, mild reaction conditions, minimum chemical wastes, and short reaction times. Without any significant reduction in the catalytic performance, up to five recyclability cycles of the catalyst were obtained. The optimization results suggest that the best condition in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol derivatives is 0.003 g of the CoFe2O4@HT@Imine-Cu(II)catalyst, TEMPO, at 70 degrees C under solvent-free condition and air.

Under metal- and ligand-free conditions, the economical and accessible CF3SO3H successfully catalyzed homogeneous O-H bond insertion reactions between hydroxyl compounds and diazo compounds. Including phenols, alcohols, water and oximes, these O-H bond insertion reactions are very general and functional-group tolerant. Here, we first report the O-H bond insertion of oximes (ketoximes and aldoximes), and their structures were characterized by X-ray crystallography. Moreover, a simple and effective method for S-H insertion reactions of thiols was also developed, delivering the desired C-S bond products with good to excellent yields. It is worth noting that the efficacy of the developed methodology could be further shown by the expeditious synthesis of the PPAR agonist MBX-102 acid.

Despite the development of targeted therapies in cancer, the problem of multidrug resistance (MDR) is still unsolved. Most patients with metastatic cancer die from MDR. Transmembrane efflux pumps as the main cause of MDR have been addressed by developed inhibitors, but early inhibitors of the most prominent and longest known efflux pump P-glycoprotein (P-gp) were disappointing. Those inhibitors have been used without knowledge about the expression of P-gp by the treated tumor. Therefore the use of inhibitors of transmembrane efflux pumps in clinical settings is reconsidered as a promising strategy in the case of the respective efflux pump expression. We discovered novel symmetric inhibitors of the symmetric efflux pump MRP4 encoded by the ABCC4 gene. MRP4 is involved in many kinds of cancer with resistance to anticancer drugs. All compounds showed better activities than the best known MRP4 inhibitor MK571 in an MRP4-overexpressing cell line assay, and the activities could be related to the various substitution patterns of aromatic residues within the symmetric molecular framework. One of the best compounds was demonstrated to overcome the MRP4-mediated resistance in the cell line model to restore the anticancer drug sensitivity as a proof of concept.

An ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of bis-isoxazole derivatives was developed. Eight 3-(6-chloropyridin-3-yl)-5-{[(3-arylisoxazol-5-yl)methoxy]methyl}isoxazoles were synthesized by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between substituted isoxazolyl alkyne compounds and 6-chloro-N-hydroxynicotinimidoyl chloride. The structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by HRMS, FTIR, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Wherein, the antifungal and antibacterial activities of target compounds were tested. The synthesized compounds 6a and 6h exhibited better antifungal activity in comparison with the standard drug itraconazole. The minimum inhibitory concentrations(MICs) of both compound 6a and compound 6h were both 4 mu g/mL against Candida albicans ATCC 10231.
