Small-ring heterocycles comprising pyrrole and pyrazole are well known for their rich biological properties. In this article, an efficient green sonochemical approach was designed for the synthesis of novel, fully substituted pyrroles connected to pyrazole scaffolds via a one-pot, four-component isocyanide-based sequential reaction. This reaction was carried out using various 5-amino-pyrazoles, aldehydes, dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates and isocyanides for the synthesis of fully functionalized pyrroles with high chemoselectivity in the presence of a catalytic amount of PTSA center dot H2O, in good to excellent yields under ultrasound irradiation. This waste-free (-H2O) reaction exhibited a high atom economy and step economy via creating four new bonds, including two C-N and two C-C bonds, and the formation of two five-member heterocycles which are connected in a single operation. The mechanism of this four-component domino process involved sequential imination-dipolar cyclization-[1,5]-H shift reactions. The synthesized compounds possess interesting fluorescence features, and the bioactive scaffolds might attract great interest in the fields of clinical diagnostics and biomedical research in the future.

Pterocarpus is one of the most widely used timber resources on the market. But the utilization rate has been low. In order to improve the utilization of Pterocarpus processing residue, as well as explore the reason of its good decay-resistance. In this study, the antifungal mechanism of Peterocarpes spp., aqueous extracts and ethanol extracts of three Pterocarpus species were studied. The antimicrobial active factors were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Italian poplar (Populus euramevicana cv. ‘I-214’) wood was immersed in the extracts and then inoculated with both Coriolus versicolor and Glaeophyllum trabeum. The antimicrobial properties of the extracts were studied, and the mechanism underlying these properties were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that the yield of ethanol extracts from the three Pterocarpus species was significantly higher than that of aqueous extracts. Pterocarpus soyauxii and Pterocarpus macarocarpus produced the highest yield of ethanol extracts (28.59%) and aqueous extracts (14.31%), respectively. With increasing concentrations, the antimicrobial activities of aqueous extracts of Pterocarpus angolensis and Pterocarpus macarocarpus gradually increased, while the antimicrobial activity of other extracts remained constant. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis identified a considerable number of phenols, ketones, amines, and aromatic compounds in all extracts, which is consistent with their antimicrobial activity and suggests synergism among the chemicals.

A bi-functional cobalt and nitrogen co-doped carbon catalyst was fabricated by calcinating the chelate compound containing citric acid, melamine and CoCl2 center dot 6H(2)O in N-2, with the mixed salts of LiCl and KCl as the template. Co and N species are highly dispersed in the target catalyst, which has a high surface area of 1011 m(2) g(-1). Such structure enables it to efficiently catalyze the direct aerobic oxidative esterification of benzyl alcohol with methanol to the ester of methyl benzoate; meanwhile, it exhibits superior potential ability for the application of oxygen reduction reaction, which is a vital process happening on the cathode of fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

Attempted nucleophilic displacements of L-rhamnosyl 2,4-bistriflates led to serendipitous formation of a chiral diene via competing cascade eliminations. The reaction also followed the same pathway with D-rhamnosyl and Dmannosyl 2,4-bistriflates substrates providing access to dienes with opposite stereochemistry. The reaction presumably proceeds through E2 elimination of C2 triflate followed by allylic rearrangement. The easily accessible chiral dienes would be useful in the synthesis of natural products.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and their corresponding N-oxides (PANOs) have been determined in food and feed at levels relevant for consumer health. More than 660 different PAs have been detected, but few are available as reference substances for analytical demands. In the context of the European legislation on maximum levels of PAs in food products, a defined analytical scope of 21 PAs for determination has been suggested. An expansion of the scope from 21 to 35 PAs, including 14 structural isomers, is currently under discussion. In the present study, a target screening method was established for a comprehensive characterisation of PA profiles of the species Echium vulgare, Heliotropium europaeum, Cynoglossum officinale and Symphytum spp. to assess whether an expansion of the analytical scope is required to quantitatively cover the total PA contents of Boraginaceae species. The scope of the method comprised known and unknown PAs previously screened and confirmed in the respective plant extracts. A total of 176 PAs and PANOs were detected. The toxic 1,2-unsaturated PAs represent the predominant PA type with about 98% of the mean total content. This PA profiling demonstrates that an expansion of the scope from 21 to 35 PAs is required to adequately cover the mean total PA contents of Cynoglossum officinale and H. europaeum, whereas in the case of Symphytum spp. and Echium vulgare an expansion would not be necessary.

Hierarchical single-crystal ZSM-5 zeolites with different Si/Al ratios (Hier-ZSM-5-x, where x = 50, 100, 150 and 200) were synthesized using an ordered mesoporous carbon-silica composite as hard template. Hier-ZSM-5-x exhibits improved mass transport properties, excellent mechanical and hydrothermal stability, and higher catalytic activity than commercial bulk zeolites in the benzyl alcohol self-etherification reaction. Results show that a decrease in the Si/Al ratio in hierarchical single-crystal ZSM-5 zeolites leads to a significant increase in the acidity and the density of micropores, which increases the final catalytic conversion. The effect of porous hierarchy on the diffusion of active sites and the final catalytic activity was also studied by comparing the catalytic conversion after selectively designed poisoned acid sites. These poisoned Hier-ZSM-5-x shows much higher catalytic conversion than the poisoned commercial ZSM-5 zeolite, which indicates that the numerous intracrystalline mesopores significantly reduce the diffusion path of the reactant, leading to the faster diffusion inside the zeolite to contact with the acid sites in the micropores predominating in ZSM-5 zeolites. This study can be extended to develop a series of hierarchical single-crystal zeolites with expected catalytic performance.

In this work, 1,3,5,7-tetraazaadamantan-1-ium chloride (AIL) functionalized silica-coated calcium oxide hybrid nanocatalyst (CaO@SiO2@AIL) as a novel, efficient, green and recyclable heterogeneous ionic liquid catalyst was synthesized. Catalytic activity of the CaO@SiO2@AIL hybrid nanoparticles was investigated for synthesis of the pharmaceutically valuable 2-imino-2H-chromene and dihydropyrano[c]chromene derivatives. A wide range of amines and aromatic aldehydes containing either electron-withdrawing or electron-donating substituent were examined using optimized conditions to produce the desired products. 2-Imino-2H-chromenes were synthesized under solvent-free condition, and dihydropyrano[c]chromenes were prepared in aqueous medium as green conditions within short reaction times, high yields and using easy workup procedures. Structure confirmation and surface properties of the core/shell hybrid nanoparticles were considered via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, WDS map scan, thermogravimetric and elemental analyses. This IL-supported heterogeneous nanocatalyst can be reused at least six times without considerable loss of its performance.

A panchromatic triad, consisting of benzothiazole (BTZ) and BF2-chelated boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) moieties covalently linked to a zinc porphyrin (ZnP) core, has been synthesized and systematically characterized by using H-1 NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, UV-visible, steady-state fluorescence, electrochemical, and femtosecond transient absorption techniques. The absorption band of the triad, BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP, and dyads, BTZ-BODIPY and BODIPY-ZnP, along with the reference compounds BTZ-OMe, BODIPY-OMe, and ZnP-OMe exhibited characteristic bands corresponding to individual chromophores. Electrochemical measurements on BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP exhibited redox behavior similar to that of the reference compounds. Upon selective excitation of BTZ (approximate to 290 nm) in the BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP triad, the fluorescence of the BTZ moiety is quenched, due to photoinduced energy transfer (PEnT) from (1)BTZ* to the BODIPY moiety, followed by quenching of the BODIPY emission due to sequential PEnT from the (BODIPY)-B-1* moiety to ZnP, resulting in the appearance of the ZnP emission, indicating the occurrence of a two-step singlet-singlet energy transfer. Further, a supramolecular tetrad, BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP:ImC(60), was formed by axially coordinating the triad with imidazole-appended fulleropyrrolidine (ImC(60)), and parallel steady-state measurements displayed the diminished emission of ZnP, which clearly indicated the occurrence of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from (ZnP)-Zn-1* to ImC(60). Finally, femtosecond transient absorption spectral studies provided evidence for the sequential occurrence of PEnT and PET events, namely, (1)BTZ*-BODIPY-ZnP:ImC(60)-> BTZ-(BODIPY)-B-1*-ZnP:ImC(60)-> BTZ-BODIPY-(ZnP)-Zn-1*:ImC(60)-> BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP.+:ImC(60)(.-) in the supramolecular tetrad. The evaluated rate of energy transfer, k(EnT), was found to be 3-5×10(10) s(-1), which was slightly faster than that observed in the case of BODIPY-ZnP and BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP, lacking the coordinated ImC(60). The rate constants for charge separation and recombination, k(CS) and k(CR), respectively, calculated by monitoring the rise and decay of C-60(.-) were found to be 5.5×10(10) and 4.4×10(8) s(-1), respectively, for the BODIPY-ZnP:ImC(60) triad, and 3.1×10(10) and 4.9×10(8) s(-1), respectively, for the BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP:ImC(60) tetrad. Initial excitation of the tetrad, promoting two-step energy transfer and a final electron-transfer event, has been successfully demonstrated in the present study.
