The present work deals with the characterization of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in wines from the Slovak Tokaj wine region. Studied wine samples were divided into three groups-varietal wines from registered Tokaj vine varieties, film wines Tokajske samorodne dry, and naturally sweet botrytized wines Tokaj selections. The VOCs from wines were extracted using optimized solid phase microextraction (SPME) and analyzed by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) coupled to high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HRTOF-MS). In total, 176 VOCs were identified in all 46 studied samples. It was found that the total number of VOCs in varietal wines was generally higher than in botrytized wines. All three studied categories showed characteristic VOC profiles with significant differences. Varietal wines were characterized by higher concentrations of esters and terpenoids originating from grapes. The presence of gamma-octalactone, (E)-6-methylhept-2-en-4-one, and lack of benzaldehyde were typical for Tokajske samorodne dry. Tokaj selections expressed the highest concentration of diethyl malate, benzaldehyde, and furfurals. Several interesting trends were also observed. The concentration of fermentation products was highest in varietal wines, while long-term matured Tokaj special wines were typified by the presence of compounds related to noble-rotten raisins (2-phenylacetaldehyde, ethyl 2-phenylacetate, and 2-phenylethanol), wood (cis-whisky lactone), and aging (1,1,6-trimethyl-2H-naphthalene, furfural, and 5-methylfurfural).

Tertiary amines are ubiquitous and valuable compounds in synthetic chemistry, with a wide range of applications in organocatalysis, organometallic complexes, biological processes and pharmaceutical chemistry. One of the most frequently used pathways to synthesize tertiary amines is the reductive amination reaction of carbonyl compounds. Despite developments of numerous new reductive amination methods in the past few decades, this reaction generally requires non-atom-economic processes with harsh conditions and toxic transition-metal catalysts. Herein, we report simple yet practical protocols using triflic acid as a catalyst to efficiently promote the direct reductive amination reactions of carbonyl compounds on a broad range of substrates. Applications of this new method to generate valuable heterocyclic frameworks and polyamines are also included.

To find novel human carbonic anhydrase (hCA) inhibitors, we synthesized thirteen compounds by combining thiazolidinone with benzenesulfonamide. The result of the X-ray single-crystal diffraction experiment confirmed the configuration of this class of compounds. The enzyme inhibition assays against hCA II and IX showed desirable potency profiles, as effective as the positive controls. The docking studies revealed that compounds (2) and (7) efficiently bound in the active site cavity of hCA IX by forming sufficient interactions with active site residues. The fragment of thiazolidinone played an important role in the binding of the molecules to the active site.

An investigation of the reaction of heteroatom nucleophiles with ketene dimers, with an emphasis on a discussion of diastereoselectivity where applicable, is described. During this study we focused on the reaction of nitrogen-centred nucleophiles (Weinreb amine, lithiated Weinreb amide, and an amino acid derivative), and oxygen-centred nucleophiles (alkoxides). Simple Weinreb amide derivatives of ketene heterodimers were formed in moderate to excellent yield (up to 89%) and excellent retention of chirality (ee up to 91%), albeit with poor diastereoselectivity. The 2-pyridone-catalysed amine ring-opening was also applied to the asymmetric synthesis of a cinnabaramide A intermediate. Finally, the use of amide and alkoxide ring-opening nucleophiles enabled the development of a sequential one-pot reaction with benzaldehyde to afford delta-lactones in moderate yields (up to 47%) but with good diastereoselectivity (dr up to 24:1). Guaiacyl acetone (GA) is a phenolic carbonyl emitted in significant quantities by wood combustion that undergoes rapid aqueous-phase oxidation to produce aqueous secondary organic aerosol (aqSOA). We investigate the photosensitized oxidation of GA by an organic triplet excited state (C-3*) and the formation and aging of the resulting aqSOA in wood smokeinfluenced fog/cloud water. The chemical transformations of the aqSOA were characterized in situ using a high-resolution time-offlight aerosol mass spectrometer. Additionally, aqSOA samples collected over different time periods were analyzed using highperformance liquid chromatography coupled with a photodiode array detector and a high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometer (HPLC-PDA-HRMS) to provide details on the molecular composition and optical properties of brown carbon (BrC) chromophores. Our results show efficient formation of aqSOA from GA, with an average mass yield around 80%. The composition and BrC properties of the aqSOA changed significantly over the course of reaction. Three generations of aqSOA products were identified via positive matrix factorization analysis of the aerosol mass spectrometry data. Oligomerization and functionalization dominated the production of the first-generation aqSOA, whereas fragmentation and ring-opening reactions controlled the formation of more oxidized second-and third-generation products. Significant formation of BrC was observed in the early stages of the photoreaction, while organic acids were produced throughout the experiment. High-molecular weight molecules (m/z > 180) with high aromaticity were identified via HPLC-PDA-HRMS and were found to account for a majority of the UV-vis absorption of the aqSOA.

The present paper is devoted to the search for drug-like molecules with anticancer properties using the thiazolo[3,2-b][1,2,4]triazole-6-one scaffold. A series of 24 novel thiazolo-[3,2-b][1,2,4]triazole-6-ones with 5-aryl(heteryl)idene- and 5-aminomethylidene-moieties has been synthesized employing three-component and three-stage synthetic protocols. A mixture of Z/E-isomers was obtained in solution for the synthesized 5-aminomethylidene-thiazolo[3,2-b]-[1,2,4]triazole-6-ones. The compounds have been studied for their antitumor activity in the NCI 60 lines screen. Some compounds present excellent anticancer properties at 10 mu M. Derivatives 2h and 2i were the most active against cancer cell lines without causing toxicity to normal somatic (HEK293) cells. A preliminary SAR study had been performed for the synthesized compounds.

We have developed a supramolecular (close form) [2]pseudorotaxane polymer containing the green-emissive (lambda(em) = 523 nm) BODIPY-based pillar[5]arene host and the non-emissive spiropyran (SP)-based cyano guest (close form), which can be converted to a red-emissive (lambda(em) = 630 nm) merocyanine (MC)-based guest (open form) upon UV exposure as well as turned into a bi-fluorophoric host-guest polymer with ratiometric PL emission of Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) behavior in THF/water solution (60% H2O, v/v). The equal host-guest molar ratio and the formation of the [2]pseudorotaxane polymer can be further verified using H-1 NMR titration, Job’s plot analysis, DOSY and ITC experiments. Hence, the bi-fluorophoric host-guest (with the MC open form) polymer possessed the highest red-emission of the MC acceptor, which was also confirmed using TRPL measurements to possess the shortest lifetime of 0.37 ns and the best FRET efficiency of 83.5%. Since the MC unit could react with CN- to induce a non-emissive quenching process, the mono-fluorophoric guest would show turn-off PL behavior and detect cyanide ions with a corresponding limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.94 mu M. In comparison, the optimal LOD value of 0.48 mu M toward CN- anion could be achieved by our bi-fluorophoric host-guest polymer via the FRET-OFF process. Therefore, cyanide detection and cell viability tests using the open form of the [2]pseudorotaxane polymer suggest useful bio-imaging applications in living cells.

A novel approach was achieved for growing citric acid towards polymer-like graphene quantum dots (PGQD) with high efficiency in the presence of sodium hydroxide as a base catalyst. This protocol is completely safe, simple, fast, and efficient by a bottom up strategy. Thermal treatment of a mixture containing citric acid with NaOH at 300 degrees C gave PGQD during 5 min. The reaction afforded a new heterogeneous catalyst, Pd/PdO/Fe3O4@PGQD, in the presence of Pd and Fe3O4. The magnetically recoverable catalyst showed high activity in the oxidation of alkylarenes and alcohols using H2O2 as a green oxidant at room temperature. Comparison of the results with previous reports showed the efficiency of the catalyst to have high turnover numbers in mild reaction conditions.

A highly efficient and modular synthesis of nematode pheromone ascarosides was developed, which highlights a 4-step scalable synthesis of the common intermediate 10 in 23% yield from commercially available l-rhamnose by using orthoesterification/benzylation/orthoester rearrangement as the key step. Six diverse ascarosides were synthesized accordingly. Notably, biological investigations revealed that ascr#1 and ascr#18 treatment resulted in enhanced callose accumulation in Arabidopsis leaves. And ascr#18 also increased the expression of defense-related genes such as PR1, PDF1.2, LOX2 and AOS, which might contribute to the enhanced plant defense responses. This study not only allows a facile access to 1-O, 2-O, and 4-O substituted ascarosides, but also provides valuable insights into their biological activities in inducing plant defense response, as well as their mode of action.

Two novel dinuclear Zn(II) and tetranuclear Co(II) complexes of a tetradentate N2O2 Schiff base ligand (H2L = N,N ‘-bis-(4-hydroxysalicylidene)-1,3-diaminopropane) were prepared. The structures of the H2L ligand, [4(Zn2L(mu-O2CCH3)(O2CCH3)(H2O))] . 4CH(3)OH . 3H(2)O (complex 1) and [Co4L2(mu-O2CCH3)(2)(O2CCH3)(2)].2H(2)O (complex 2) were unambiguously characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that two Zn(II) nuclei of 1 were connected through mu-phenolato and mu-acetato bridges and had distorted square pyramidal and distorted octahedral coordination geometries. Four Co(II) nuclei of 2, on the contrary, showed a Co4O4 cubane-like configuration in which Co(II) cations and O atoms were located at alternating corners of a distorted cube. Density functional theory studies at the B3LYP/6-31 G(d) level were carried out to gain an insight into the thermodynamic stability of the complexes. in vitro cytotoxicity of the ligand and the complexes were evaluated using the MTT assay against breast cancer MCF7 cells, melanoma cancer A375 cells, and prostate cancer PC3 cells as representative human cancer cell lines. Complex 1 showed a remarkable activity against A375 and PC3 cancer cell lines. In addition, 1 and 2 were used as precursors to produce zinc and cobalt oxide nanoparticles via pyrolysis technique. The resulting ZnO and Co3O4 nanoparticles were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Then, these nanoparticles were used as heterogeneous catalysts in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol with hydrogen peroxide at room temperature. Both catalysts showed good recyclability with a negligible decrease in their efficiency during four catalytic cycles. The results of theoretical calculations showed that the most stable product was benzaldehyde, which is in good agreement with the obtained experimental results.
