Background: One of the principal factors in the field of research in green chemistry is to drive chemical reactions using ultrasonication as a versatile synthetic tool. Moreover, nanostructured metal salts occupy an important position as low cost, efficient, heterogeneous, and green catalysts in chemical reactions. Pyrimidine has also acquired significance because it is a core structure in a variety of natural and non-natural agents, many of which display versatile biological activities and medical applications. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the role of nickel(II) chromite nanoparticles (NiCr2O4 NPs) as a green and recyclable catalyst for the synthesis of 2,4-diamino-6-arylpyrimidine-5-yl cyanides under ultrasonic radiation. Methods: A direct cyclocondensation reaction of guanidine nitrate, aromatic aldehydes, and malononitrile was performed using NiCr2O4 NPs as an effective heterogeneous catalyst under ultrasonic radiation at room temperature conditions to prepare 2,4-diamino-6-aryl-pyrimidine-5-yl cyanides in high yields. The described catalyst was prepared successfully according to a simple hydrothermal route and fully characterized by the X-Ray diffraction (XRD) technique, dispersive energy X-Ray (EDS) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Results: A number of 2,4-diamino-6-aryl-pyrimidine- 5-yl cyanides were effectively synthesized in high yields (94-98%) within short reaction times (15 min). All synthesized compounds were well characterized by IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and also by elemental analyses. Conclusion: In conclusion, a simple, efficient, and green synthesis of 2,4-diamino-6-arylpyrimidine-5-yl cyanides was developed using NiCr2O4 NPs as a green nanocatalyst, and under ultrasound radiation as a green tool. The mild reaction conditions, avoiding the use of toxic solvents or reagents, high atom economy, high yields, and simple workup are the attractive features of this new protocol.

Fingerprint development is one of the most useful techniques in forensic investigation. The powder method is widely used, as it consists of a non-destructive testing. However, some of the powders commonly used are toxic and dangerous to human health. In this sense, monofunctional analogues of curcumin (3a-e) are proposed as novel coloring powders for the development of latent fingerprints. Granulometric and scanning electron microscopy analysis were performed for a better understanding of the interaction between developers and substrates. The best results for the development of fingerprints were obtained with compound (1E,4E)-1,5-di-p-tolylpenta-1,4-dien-3-one (3b). Development with this compound was specific and allowed detection both from male and female donors. Also, in an in vitro experiment, compound 3b presented low cytotoxicity in a mammalian cell line. Based on that, a novel alternative for latent fingerprint developers was proposed.

DK-I-56-1 (7-methoxy-2-(4-methoxy-d(3)-phenyl)-2,5-dihydro-3H-pyrazolo[4,3-c]quinolin-3-one), a recently de-veloped deuterated pyrazoloquinolinone, has been recognized as a lead candidate for treatment of various neuropsychiatric disorders. During preclinical investigation of poorly water-soluble compounds such as DK-I-56-1, the application of nanotechnology could be advantageous due to improved safety and possibly increased bioavailability of nanosized formulation. DK-I-56-1 nanosuspensions stabilized by polysorbate 80, alone or in combination with poloxamers 188 i.e. 407 or D-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate, were prepared using a small-scale media milling device. With particle size 208.7-250.6 nm and polydispersity index <0.250, selected nanodiseprsions were stable for three weeks. Pharmacokinetic and biodistribution studies following intraperitoneal administration of three types of formulation in mice indicated high plasma DK-I-56-1 levels after solution (10,228.6 +/- 1037.2 ngh/ml) and nanosuspension (6770.4 +/- 770.7 ngh/ml) but not suspension ad-ministration (966.0 +/- 58.1 ngh/ml). However, distribution of DK-I-56-1 after solution was heavily influenced by its composition, and brain availability of nanosuspension was superior to that of solution formulation. In spontaneous locomotor activity test, the expected hyperlocomotor effect was observed after nanosuspension administration, without compromising impact of the vehicle/excipients used. Therefore, nanonization of drug compound assembled with proper selection of stabilizers may seemingly contribute further thorough testing of DK-I-56-1 preclinical efficacy. A novel series of 7,8-dichlorobenzofuro[3,2-c]quinoline-6,9,10(5H)-triones was obtained regioselectively in good yields. Main conclusion beta-sitosterol influences amino acids, carbohydrates, organic acids, and other metabolite metabolism and homeostasis largely contributing to better tolerance to water stress in white clover. beta-sitosterol (BS) could act as an important plant growth regulator when plants are subjected to harsh environmental conditions. Objective of this study was to examine effects of BS on growth and water stress tolerance in white clover based on physiological responses and metabolomics. White clover was pretreated with or without BS and then subjected to water stress for 7 days in controlled growth chambers. Physiological analysis demonstrated that exogenous application of BS (120 mu M) could significantly improve stress tolerance associated with better growth performance and photosynthesis, higher leaf relative water content, and less oxidative damage in white clover in response to water stress. Metabolic profiling identified 78 core metabolites involved in amino acids, organic acids, sugars, sugar alcohols, and other metabolites in leaves of white clover. For sugars and sugar alcohol metabolism, the BS treatment enhanced the accumulation of fructose, glucose, maltose, and myo-inositol contributing to better antioxidant capacity, growth maintenance, and osmotic adjustment in white clover under water stress. The application of BS was inclined to convert glutamic acid into proline, 5-oxoproline, and chlorophyll instead of going to pyruvate and alanine; the BS treatment did not significantly affect intermediates of tricarboxylic acid cycle (citrate, aconitate, and malate), but promoted the accumulation of other organic acids including lactic acid, glycolic acid, glyceric acid, shikimic acid, galacturonic acid, and quinic acid in white clover subjected to water stress. In addition, cysteine, an important antioxidant metabolite, was also significantly improved by BS in white clover under water stress. These altered amino acids and organic acids metabolism could play important roles in growth maintenance and modulation of osmotic and redox balance against water stress in white clover. Current findings provide a new insight into BS-induced metabolic homeostasis related to growth and water stress tolerance in plants.

In this study, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay musts, and fruit juices from cherry, kiwi, peach, and strawberry were co-fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae EC1118 and Torulaspora delbrueckii UMY196 at two different proportions (80:20 (v/v) and 60:40 (v/v)). The most pleasant fruit-based drink was obtained with Cabernet Sauvignon must and kiwi juice in a proportion of 60:40 and fermented with T. delbrueckii. This beverage was produced in higher volume to simulate a scale-up, and the aromatic profile, sensory description, and consumer acceptability were determined. The most powerful odorants of the kiwi-based drink were ethyl octanoate, phenylethanal, ethyl hexanoate, vinyl-guaiacol, benzaldehyde, and nonanal, for which the odor activity values were 21.1, 3.3, 2.6, 2.2, 1.9, and 1.6, respectively. These findings were in accordance with the sensory analysis, since the emerged descriptors were fruity (ethyl octanoate), honey and floral (phenylethanal), apple and peach (ethyl hexanoate), and citrus (nonanal). The consumers judged the kiwi-based drink acceptable (67%) and 39% of them would buy it. The reliable fermentation of a grape must/fruit juice was demonstrated. The kiwi-based drink represents an innovative and pleasant beverage with a positive impact on sustainability as its production can limit the loss of fresh fruits, as well as contribute to the enological field.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a multifactorial neurological disorder involving complex pathogenesis. Single target directed drugs proved ineffective and since last few years’ different pharmacological strategies including multi-targeting agents are being explored for the effective drug development for AD. A total of 19 dipropargyl substituted diphenylpyrimidines have been synthesized and evaluated for the monoamine oxidase (MAO) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition potential. All the compounds were found to be selective and reversible inhibitors of MAO-B isoform. These compounds also displayed good AChE inhibition potential with IC50 values in low micromolar range. AVB4 was found to be the most potent MAO-B inhibitor with IC50 value of 1.49 +/- 0.09 mu M and AVB1 was found to be the most potent AChE inhibitor with IC50 value of 135 +/- 0.03 mu M. In the ROS protection inhibition studies, AVB1 and AVB4 displayed weak but interesting activity in SH-SYSY cells. In the cytotoxicity studies involving SH-SY5Y cells, both AVB1 and AVB4 were found to be non-toxic to the tissue cells. In the molecular dynamic simulation studies of 30 ns, the potent compounds were found to be quite stable in the active site of MAO-B and AChE. The results suggested that AVB1 and AVB4 are promising dual inhibitors and have the potential to be developed as anti-Alzheimer’s drug. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier Masson SAS.
