A combined experimental and theoretical study on the micro and macroscopic properties of liquid mixtures containing glycerol, as common component, and 2-butanol, 2,3-butanediol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, and benzyl alcohol is reported in this work. Thermophysical properties were measured over the whole compositions range in the 298.15 K-318.15 K temperature range and analyzed considering excess thermodynamic properties in terms of intermolecular forces. Quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics simulations were carried to analyze the properties of mixed systems in terms of the characteristics of hydrogen bonding, nanostructuring and molecular level effects. The reported results provide a multiscale approach to the study on hydrogen bonding in complex alcohol mixtures. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Historical stringed musical instruments are a unique class of cultural heritage objects. Crafted during the 16th-18th centuries, these instruments remain somewhat mysterious. Due to the absence of written historical documents of traditional varnish recipes, their chemical characterization is the only way to recover the lost ‘secret’ of the Cremonese stringed instrument maker Antonio Stradivari and his contemporaries, whose traditions had been lost by 1800. Pyrolysis combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) followed by on-fiber silylation (Py SPME Syl GC-MS) was applied to a large collection of standards to evaluate its validity for compositional analysis and material identification of historical stringed instrument varnishes. The standards included pure resins (colophony, amber, mastic, sandarac, elemi), different types of shellac, as well as colorants or additives such as madder, dragon’s blood, and Aloe vera powder, and other materials (propolis, beeswax). The aim was to obtain an extensive collection of GC-MS data of silylated pyrolysis products useful for the characterization of the finishes of these unique historical objects. A set of distinct pyrolysis patterns and products were chosen as specific molecular markers for each standard. The method was applied to instrument varnish samples from Stainer, Baioni, Amati, Guarneri, Gasparo da Salo, Maggini, and Guadagnini instruments. The method was shown to be effective for the identification of oxidized lignin, drying oils, and diterpenic resins. In the case of dragon’s blood, madder, shellac, and propolis new markers were identified, suggesting their presence in some instrument varnishes. The identification of proteins and madder appeared most challenging.

A multiblock copolymer with increased charge density in the hydrophilic phase was synthesized by utilizing a trisulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) backbone (SHQS100). To achieve a balance of membrane properties a partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether benzonitrile) hydrophobic phase (6FPAEB) was used in uneven block lengths to form the hydrophilic-hydrophobic multiblock copolymer. Multiblock copolymers were synthesized via nucleophilic aromatic substitution to achieve high molecular weight copolymers and corresponding ductile membranes. Combination of the shorter increased charge density hydrophilic phase and longer partially fluorinated hydrophobic phase resulted in superior proton conductivity and mechanical properties while limiting water uptake and swelling, despite high ion-exchange capacity. The trifunctional SHQSH hydrophilic phase is proposed to produce a more concentrated charge region in the hydrophilic phase, while swelling of the membrane was limited by a longer partially fluorinated hydrophobic phase.

In this study, a novel ionic liquid-modified magnetic mesoporous silica supported tungstate (Fe3O4@MCM@IL-WO4=) with core-shell structure is prepared, characterized and applied as recoverable catalyst in the green oxidation of alcohols. The magnetic mesoporous Fe3O4@MCM material was prepared through surfactant directed modification of magnetic iron oxides with tetramethoxysilane. The Fe3O4@MCM@EL-W-4(=) nanocatalyst was then prepared via chemical attachment of alkyl imidazolium chloride on Fe3O4@MCM followed by treatment with sodium tungstate. This catalyst was characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, TG, EDX, low-angle and wide-angle PXRD, SEM, VSM and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses. The Fe3O4@MCM@IL-WO4= was applied as powerful catalyst in the green oxidation of alcohols using hydrogen peroxide oxidant under ultrasonic conditions. The corresponding carbonyl products were obtained in high yield and selectivity. The reusability, recoverability and durability of this catalyst have also been studied under applied conditions.

Background: The quinoline scaffold has been an attraction due to its pharmacological activities such as anti-HIV, anti-neoplastic, anti-asthmatic, anti-tuberculotic, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial. Objective: The designed quinoline-3-carboxylate derivatives were synthesized through a two-step reaction and evaluated for antiproliferative activity against MCF-7 and K562 cell lines. Methods: Synthesized compounds were characterized by modern analytical techniques like NMR, 2DNMR, mass. and IR. Moreover, the purity of compounds was analyzed through the HPLC. In the progress of biological results, all synthesized compounds were evaluated for antiproliferative activity against MCF-7 and 1562 cell lines. Results: The synthesized compounds exhibited micromolar inhibition in all over the ranges, however, some of the compounds showed better activity than the standard anticancer drug such, as 4m and 4n with the IC50 value of 0.33 mu M against the MCF-7 cell line, and the compounds 4k and 4m showed potential activity against the K562 cell line with the IC50 value of 0.28 mu M. The anti-cancer activities of compounds were found to be thmugh the up-regulation of intrinsic apoptosis pathways. Conclusion: The biological data of all compounds in both cell lines were utilized for the structural activity relationship of the quinoline-3-carboxylate pharmacophore. The active lead was further validated through rigorous in silico studies for the drug-likeness (QED) and Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion, and Toxicity (ADMET) properties. Here in the present research is utilized for the demonstration of an important pharmacophore, which could be utilized for further development to become a lead as an anticancer agent with minimal toxicity.

A novel type of multicomponent nanocomposite of LDH@PDA@PNIPAM@Pd/carbon dots (CDs) was successfully constructed for highly efficient heterogeneous catalytic reduction from two-dimensional layer double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheet functionalized with thermo-responsive PNIPAM polymer brushes based on the mussel-inspired chemistry. CDs were used as a reductant and stabilizer by in situ loading metal Pd onto LDH@PDA@PNIPAM. Compared with LDH@PDA@PNIPAM@Pd catalyst without CDs modification, the designed LDH@PDA@PNIPAM@Pd/CDs nanohybrid catalyst had better catalytic reduction ability for various dyes and nitrophenol thanks to the synergistic catalytic effect between metal active center and CDs, LDH and their high dispersion stability. Especially, a good catalytic reduction activity was demonstrated for methylene blue (MB) with a high TOF (545.2 min(-1)). Furthermore, the nanohybrid presented interesting thermo-responsive catalytic property due to the existence of PNIPAM polymer chains. In addition, the prepared catalyst also exhibited outstanding catalytic property for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction. Our study provides a new way for the composite preparation of organic-inorganic hybrid materials by polymer and inorganic materials, and shows great potential in the field of catalytic applications.

In solid-phase organic synthesis, Wang resin is traditionally used for the immobilization of acids, alcohols, phenols, and amines. We report the use of Wang resin for the traceless synthesis of ketones via acid-labile enol ethers. We demonstrate the practicality of this synthetic strategy on the solid-phase synthesis of pyrrolidine-2,4-diones, which represent the core structure of several natural products, including tetramic acid. Base-triggered condensation of pyrrolidine-2,4-diones yielded 4-hydroxy-1,1 ‘,2 ‘,5-tetrahydro-2H,5 ‘ H-[3,3 ‘-bipyrrole]-2,5 ‘-diones.

A series of unsymmetrical 1,3-disubstituted benzimidazolium chlorides were synthesized as N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors. These compounds were used for synthesis of the new ruthenium(II) complexes of the type [RuCl2(arene)(NHC)], (arene = eta(6)-p-cymene). The structures of all compounds were characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy techniques. The catalytic activity of the ruthenium complexes has been evaluated with respect to the mono-N-alkylation reactions of aromatic amines with various alcohol derivatives under solvent-free conditions at 120 degrees C using the borrowing hydrogen strategy.

A novel ionic liquid modified graphene oxide supported Mo-complex [GO@IL/MoO2(acae)(2)] was successfully prepared, characterized and its catalytic application was investigated. The GO@IL/MoO2(acae)(2) catalyst was prepared through the surface modification of graphene oxide with alkyl imidazolium chloride followed by treatment with molybdenyl acetylacetonate. The GO@IL/MoO2(acae)(2) catalyst was characterized by using FT-IR, PXRD, TGA, EDX, and SEM analyses. This catalyst showed high activity in the green production of pyrazolo[b] phthalazine dione derivatives under ultrasonic conditions. The designed catalyst was effectively recovered and successfully reused at least eight times without significant loss in its efficiency.
