Higher cocrystal synthesis depends acutely on a knowledge of supramolecular synthons. We report three synthetic approaches towards ternary halogen bonded cocrystals that illustrate specificity and generality. Electrophilicity/nucleophilicity differences are needed among alternative sites of halogen bond formation. The two halogen bonds AB and BC in a halogen bonded ternary cocrystal ABC need to be of different strength. Interaction mimicry of hydrogen bonds by halogen bonds is a viable approach towards ternaries as illustrated with the pyrene structure. Finally, the crystal engineer should well be able to anticipate halogen bonds that are stronger than hydrogen bonds.

The preparation of metal nanocomposite catalysts with MOFs as precursors has attracted extensive attention, as the design and preparation of catalysts by this method could maximize the advantages of the precursors and ensure the stability of the catalysts as much as possible. Here, a benzimidazole-modified Cu/Co bimetal-MOF as a precursor was used to synthesize a Cu-nanowire@Quasi-MOF material via a simple and low-cost thermal decomposition strategy for the first time. Experimental evaluation suggested that the Co-MOF part in Cu/Co bimetal-MOF was a morphology retainer, and the special channel composition of the Quasi-MOF played a space-confined role in the formation of the unique Cu-nanowires. Based on the detailed investigation, a possible formation mechanism was proposed. Furthermore, Cu-nanowire@Quasi-MOF exhibited excellent catalytic performance and good stability in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol in air. This study demonstrated that using MOFs as a precursor, by adjusting the calcination temperature and adding heteroatoms, can control the morphology of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in MOF derivatives, reduce agglomeration and enhance catalytic activity, which will be a promising approach to in situ preparation of complex metal nanocomposites.

Organophosphorus flame retardants are stable toxic compounds used in nearly all durable plastic products and are considered major emerging pollutants. The phosphotriesterase from Sphingobium sp. TCM1 (Sb-PTE) is one of the few enzymes known to be able to hydrolyze organophosphorus flame retardants such as triphenyl phosphate and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate. The effectiveness of Sb-PTE for the hydrolysis of these organophosphates appears to arise from its ability to hydrolyze unactivated alkyl and phenolic esters from the central phosphorus core. How Sb-PTE is able to catalyze the hydrolysis of the unactivated substituents is not known. To interrogate the catalytic hydrolysis mechanism of Sb-PTE, the pH dependence of the reaction and the effects of changing the solvent viscosity were determined. These experiments were complemented by measurement of the primary and secondary 18-oxygen isotope effects on substrate hydrolysis and a determination of the effects of changing the pK(a) of the leaving group on the magnitude of the rate constants for hydrolysis. Collectively, the results indicated that a single group must be ionized for nucleophilic attack and that a separate general acid is not involved in protonation of the leaving group. The Bronsted analysis and the heavy atom kinetic isotope effects are consistent with an early associative transition state with subsequent proton transfers not being rate limiting. A novel binding mode of the substrate to the binuclear metal center and a catalytic mechanism are proposed to explain the unusual ability of Sb-PTE to hydrolyze unactivated esters from a wide range of organophosphate substrates.

Product Details of 100-51-6. I found the field of Polymer Science very interesting. The reactivity and the reaction conditions of the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) and L-lactide (LA) initiated by aluminum ketiminate complexes have been shown differently. Herein, we account for the observation by studying the mechanisms on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculations show that the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-CL and LA are rate-determined by the benzoxide insertion and the C-O bond cleavage step, respectively. Theoretical computations suggest that the reaction temperature of L-LA polymerization should be higher than that of epsilon-CL one, in agreement with the experimental data. To provide a reasonable interpretation of the experimental results and to give an insight into the catalyst design, the influence of the electronic, steric, and thermal effects on the polymerization behaviors will be also discussed in this study.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) prepared by chemical vapor deposition was combined with different amounts of carbon nanofibers (CNF) to obtain hybrid materials, which were thoroughly characterized using several techniques. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated towards the photocatalytic synthesis of vanillin (VAD) starting from vanillyl alcohol (VA). The incorporation of the carbon phase in ZnO (from 5% to 20% wt.) was found to increase the surface area and the photocatalytic performance of the materials. The latter was attributed to the efficient separation of charge carriers generated on the optical semiconductor. With the best performing material, the one containing 10% of CNF, the selectivity of the synthesis towards vanillin generation was increased by a factor of 2.5 compared to previous studies, with the additional advantage of carrying the reaction in aqueous medium. The same photocatalyst was successfully applied to the selective synthesis of other aromatic aldehydes, namely anisaldehyde, piperonal, and benzaldehyde. A relationship between the efficiency of the photocatalytic oxidation of the alcohols and the activating nature of their aromatic ring substituents was proposed.

Herein, we report a general and simplified synthesis of fluorophosphonates directly from p-nitrophenylphosphonates. This FP on-demand reaction is mediated by a commercially available polymer-supported fluoride reagent that produces a variety (25 examples) of fluorophosphonates in high yields while only requiring reagent filtration for pure fluorophosphonate isolation. This reaction protocol facilitates the rapid profiling of serine hydrolases with diverse and novel sets of activated phosphonates with differential proteome reactivity. Moreover, slight modification of the procedure into a reaction-to-assay format has enabled additional screening efficiency.

In this study, a novel green walnut liqueur (GWL) based on green walnuts, as the main ingredient, with the addition of fruits, aromatic plants, chocolate and honey, was produced at the pilot-scale. Antioxidant activity (AO) of the obtained GWL was determined using multiple AO assays in parallel, standard spectrophotometric (FC, DPPH and FRAP) and recently developed electrochemical ones, HydroxoPerhydroxoMercury(II) Complex and Mercury Reduction Antioxidant Power, and compared to similar commercial alcoholic beverages. Characterization of the GWL in terms of volatile and polyphenolic components was performed using SPE-GC-MS and HPLC-DAD-MS/MS, respectively. Sensory quality assessment was performed by experts in the field of sensory analysis of alcoholic beverages, using a scoring method. According to all AO assays applied, AO activity and total phenolics content of GWL were superior in comparison to commercial spirits considered. The volatile fraction of GWL was mainly composed of eugenol,alpha-terpineol and vanillin, while the most prevalent phenolic compounds were gallic (5.054 mg/L) and chlorogenic acid (1.307 mg/L) and flavonoids such as catechine (0.882 mg/L), quercetin (0.499 mg/L) and its sugar-conjugated derivatives, quercetin 3-O-glucoside (0.774 mg/L) and quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside (0.614 mg/L). Gallic acid is the major contributor to total AO activity, especially determined by DPPH and FRAP, followed by catechine, quercetin and chlorogenic acid. Among the terpenoids, contribution of eugenol to total AO activity is estimated as the highest. Excellent sensory quality (18.52 of maximum 20 scores) was ascribed to GWL. Consequently, the presence of bioactive compounds and high AO activity of GWL, in addition to high sensory quality score, indicates a high market potential for this high-value product.
