Catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) biocrudes can comprise up to 30 wt % of oxygen content in compounds such as polyphenols, acids, carbonyls, and anhydrosugars and thus require upgrading by, e.g., hydrotreatment, to produce transport fuels. The chemical characterization of phenolic and acidic compounds in biocrudes is of great importance to optimize the CFP process. In this study, an analytical workflow is proposed for nontarget chemical fingerprinting analysis of CFP biocrudes using supercritical fluid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (SFC-HRMS) with negative electrospray ionization (ESI-), followed by multivariate data analysis. The method was developed and tested on five biocrude samples from loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) with varying oxygen content (14.9-28.8 wt % wet basis) due to different CFP conditions. The pixel-based analysis displayed chemical variation between all samples. Twenty-four regions of interest were tentatively identified, including mono- and polyphenols, fatty acids, and methylated and methoxylated phenols. The identification workflow and MS/MS analysis were prioritized on the peaks with the highest relative concentration. The developed SFC-ESI–HRMS method shows high repeatability and analyzed oxygen-containing compounds with hydroxyl and/or carboxyl moieties in combination with other moieties of up to 400 Da.

In the present work, pyrazolidine bisphenol (PYBP)-based superhydrophobic/superoleophilic benzoxazine (PBz) matrices were synthesized and described in comparison with bisphenol F benzoxazines. The preliminary in vitro toxicity assay reveals the nontoxic nature of PYBP. Data obtained from thermal and surface studies indicate that the prepared PYBP-based PBzs have enhanced thermal stability than those of bisphenol F benzoxazines. Further, the prepared PYBP-based PBz-coated cotton fabric displayed superior water contact angle (WCA = 154.7 degrees) and sliding contact angle (theta = 9 degrees). Observations from SEM images suggest that the inherent superhydrophobic nature was due to the formation of rough surfaces. Furthermore, oil-water separation was successfully ascertained from the appropriate experimental conditions using the PYBP-coated fabric. The separation efficiency and flux are found to be greater than 90% after 10 cycles. Thus, the PYBP-based superhydrophobic/superoleophilic polybenzoxazines (PBzs) have been synthesized and characterized to assess their suitability for water-repellent and oil-water separation applications.

Prenylated chalcones xanthohumol (1) and 2 ‘-hydroxy-3,4,4 ‘-trimethoxy-6 ‘-O-prenyl chalcone (2) were synthesized through the Claisen-Schmidt condensation, O-prenylation, and Claisen rearrangement and deprotection respectively, using phloroglucinol and appropriate benzaldehydes as starting materials. Based on the Mannich reaction of prenylated chalcone 1 or 2 with various secondary amines and formaldehyde in acid alcohol solvent, 10 novel prenylated chalcone Mannich base derivatives 3a-3e and 4a-4e were synthesized. The kinetics of the photoelectrochemical mineralization of p-nitrophenol (PNP) and p-methoxyphenol (PMP) on rutile:anatase TiO2 nanotube electrodes (% rutile: 0, 16, and 20) has been studied. Oxidative photocurrent enhances with the increase of both the electrode potential and the rutile content. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal that incorporation of rutile into anatase nanotubes has effects on recombination dynamics. From measurements of electrical charge as a function of time under thin-layer conditions under potentiostatic control, it was determined that the oxidation of PNP and PMP follows the apparent Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate law. Chemical oxygen demand measurements confirmed total oxidation. The reaction rate parameters that define the kinetic constant (k) due to the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with adsorbed phenols and the thermodynamic constant (K) due to the adsorption of phenols with the electrode surface have been decoupled. The interaction of PNP with the surface of all TiO2 electrodes is highly favored, K(PNP) > K(PMP), resulting in a surface concentration of PNP considerably higher than that of PMP. The specific rate of the surface reaction for the transformation of phenols also increases, but the trend is inverse, that is, for all electrodes, k(PMP) > k(PNP). Understanding these kinetic tendencies can lead to better transformation of light in redox reactions.

The activation of dioxygen is the major challenge in the catalytic oxygenation of hydrocarbons under mild conditions. In this study, the catalytic efficiency for the aerobic oxidation of toluene and its derivatives by using cobaltmeso-tetraphenylporphyrin was enhanced by using acetylacetone as the oxygen activator. The influences of reaction conditions such as solvent, different metalloporphyrin catalysts, temperature, pressure and acetylacetone loading were studied, as well as the kinetics of the oxidation. Various toluene derivatives could also be oxidized to the corresponding products in satisfactory yields with this catalytic system. In this paper, the properties of a catalyst that composed of magnetic nanoparticles and Pectin biopolymer that is widely found in nature (Fe3O4@Pectin) to support nickel (II) acetate are discussed, and this catalyst was then used in response to the synthesis of the precursor required for xanthene synthesis. The heterogeneous catalyst was characterized by techniques such as FT-IR spectroscopy, FE-SEM, TEM, XRD spectroscopy, EDX spectroscopy, VSM, and ICP spectroscopy. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) was also used to determine the thermal stability of the material techniques. Then the catalyst was explored in the oxidation reaction of alcohols that has high efficiency and selectivity and the synthesized aldehydes were used as precursors for the synthesis of xanthans. Xanthans are important compounds found in a variety of biological components and drugs. The most important advantages of this method are easy to work up procedure, perform the reaction in solvent-free conditions, and the catalyst can be separated by an external magnet and used several times without reducing the activity.

In this study, a graphene oxide (GO) functionalized organic-inorganic hybrid was prepared by covalently immobilization of organic (3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane) and inorganic (H3PMo12O40) groups on the basal plane of GO. Structure of catalyst was characterized with different analysis such as FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDS, WDX, XRD, and TGA. All analyses approve the successful covalently immobilization of organic and inorganic parts on the GO. A full understanding of changes of the microbiome and metabolome during Napier grass silage in relation to aerobic exposure can improve the nutritional value and extend the aerobic stability of this important feed in tropical and subtropical regions. The round bale silage of Napier grass was prepared with deionized water (control) and screened strains Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR753 (LR753) and L. buchneri 40788 (LB). Silages were stored at ambient temperature (30-40 degrees C) for 60 days, followed by 2 and 4 days of aerobic exposure. Strains LB and LR753 significantly improved aerobic stability (>84 h vs. 18 h of control) of baled Napier grass silage by inhibiting the growth of Saccharomycetales as for the higher production of acetic acid (P < 0.05). Weissella and Issatchenkia spp. were the dominant bacteria and fungi in 60-day silage, respectively. LC-MS/MS detected a total of 426 metabolites throughout ensiling and aerobic exposure. With the decrease of Weissella spp. and the increase of Acetobacter spp., the metabolites associated with both were mainly odor-related (3-methylbutanoic acid, isoquinoline, and cuminaldehyde) and amines (tryptamine and tyramine) in control silage, while more antimicrobial activity metabolites were found in strains LB and LR753-treated silage (methylbutanoic acid, 1,2-propanediol, and tiglic acid). Screened local strain LR753 showed a promising potential for improving silage fermentation and aerobic stability of Napier grass. The present study indicates that adequately describing the microbiome and metabolome of silages during fermentation and aerobic exposure can improve ensiling practices and the screening of silage inoculants that act synergistically with the natural microbiome of the forage in hot and humid areas.
