This study reveals cobalt-catalyzed sustainable synthesis of benzimidazoles by redox-economical coupling of o-nitroanilines and alcohols. The major advantage of this report is the use of a commercially available cheap cobalt catalyst to produce a wide variety of 2-substituted benzimidazoles by hydrogen autotransfer without using any additional external redox reagent and costly ligand system. A thorough mechanistic insight of the reaction is proposed by performing a series of control experiments.

Dielectric materials play a crucial role in 5G communication technological applications such as printed circuit board (PCB) high-frequency substrate materials. Unfortunately, the fabrication of desirable dielectric performance in organic-inorganic composites is a great challenge because of lack of good interfacial compatibility and uniform dispersion between fillers and polymer. In this work, silicon dioxide (SiO2) was synchronously functionalized by gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS, s-SiO2) and 1,2-polybutadiene (PB, v-SiO2), which were then used as fillers to fabricate the s-SiO2/polyolefin or v-SiO2/polyolefin laminates. All the v-SiO2/polyolefin laminates exhibited better dielectric, thermal and mechanical properties than those of s-SiO2/polyolefin laminates under the same filler content. Specially, the 50 wt% v-SiO2/polyolefin laminate displays a low dielectric constant (3.42) and loss (3.55 x 10-3) at 10 GHz. Meanwhile, it also shows good stability of dielectric properties in a wide range of high-frequency. This work is conducive to develop laminates with superior dielectric properties and apply to PCB high-frequency substrate field.

Copper(I) complexes of the types [Cu(N-N)(PPh3)(2)]NO3(LC41-LC44) and [Cu(N-N)(PPh3)(NO3)] (LC45) carrying 3-substituted 1-pyridine-2-ylimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine (N-N) derivatives and triphenylphosphine (PPh3) ligands have been prepared. The synthesized copper(I)-phosphine complexes were fully characterized by NMR, IR, ESI-MS and UV-visible spectroscopy as well as by cyclic voltammetry. Selected structures such as LC42, LC43 and LC45 were additionally analysed by single-crystal X-ray method, which show that copper(I) centre adopts a highly distorted tetrahedral geometry. The(1)H and(13)C NMR spectral data of the complexes throw light on the nature of metal-ligand bonding. They display d pi-pi* metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition and show quasireversible Cu-I/Cu(II)metal oxidation. Among the copper(I)-phosphine complexes, LC41-LC44 exhibit moderate cytotoxicity (IC50: 24 h, 67-74 mu M; 48 h, 58-70 mu M) against human lung epithelial adenocarcinoma A549 cells, whereas LC45 displays the best activity (IC50: 24 h, 42 mu M; 48 h, 34 mu M) for A549 cancer cell line, which is better than that of the commercial antitumor drug cisplatin. All the complexes also displayed excellent selectivity by being relatively inactive against the human lung epithelial L132 normal cell line with selectivity index (SI) values ranging from 3.4 to 7.4. The complexes block cell cycle progression of A549 cells in G(0)/G(1)phase. FACSVerse analyses are suggestive of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and apoptotic cell death induced by the LC41, LC43 and LC45. The induction of apoptosis in A549 cells was shown by Annexin V with propidium iodide (PI) and 4 ‘,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining methods and established the ability of LC41, LC43 and LC45 to accumulate in the cell nuclei.

We have developed a supramolecular (close form) [2]pseudorotaxane polymer containing the green-emissive (lambda(em) = 523 nm) BODIPY-based pillar[5]arene host and the non-emissive spiropyran (SP)-based cyano guest (close form), which can be converted to a red-emissive (lambda(em) = 630 nm) merocyanine (MC)-based guest (open form) upon UV exposure as well as turned into a bi-fluorophoric host-guest polymer with ratiometric PL emission of Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) behavior in THF/water solution (60% H2O, v/v). The equal host-guest molar ratio and the formation of the [2]pseudorotaxane polymer can be further verified using H-1 NMR titration, Job’s plot analysis, DOSY and ITC experiments. Hence, the bi-fluorophoric host-guest (with the MC open form) polymer possessed the highest red-emission of the MC acceptor, which was also confirmed using TRPL measurements to possess the shortest lifetime of 0.37 ns and the best FRET efficiency of 83.5%. Since the MC unit could react with CN- to induce a non-emissive quenching process, the mono-fluorophoric guest would show turn-off PL behavior and detect cyanide ions with a corresponding limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.94 mu M. In comparison, the optimal LOD value of 0.48 mu M toward CN- anion could be achieved by our bi-fluorophoric host-guest polymer via the FRET-OFF process. Therefore, cyanide detection and cell viability tests using the open form of the [2]pseudorotaxane polymer suggest useful bio-imaging applications in living cells.

A visible-light photoredox-catalyzed tandem trifluoromethylation/cyclization/remote oxidation of 1,6-dienes has been achieved. A broad range of trifluoromethyl group-containing tetrahydrofurans or tetrahydropyrroles could be generated in good yields and with excellent diastereoselectivity by using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the oxidant. The mild and facile protocol affords direct access to trifluoromethyl group-bearing tetrahydrofurans and tetrahydropyrroles via difunctionalization of olefins.

The spiced beef is exposed to the invading of spoilage bacteria including Listeria monocytogenes. In the present study, the antimicrobial effects against L. monocytogenes of the chitosan (CS) films incorporated with apricot (Prunus armeniaca) kernel essential oil (AKEO) at 0.5% and 1.0% were demonstrated in solid medium, micro-atmosphere, liquidmedia and spiced beef. In the refrigerated storage for 24 days at 4 degrees C, compared with the control sample, the levels of peroxide value (PV) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) of the spiced beef packed by CS films incorporated AKEO at 0.5% and 1.0% were decreased to 4.8 and 3.6 meq peroxide/kg, and 0.5 and 0.4 mg MDA/kg (p < 0.5 or p < 0.1), and the levels for pH and total carbonyls (TC) were decreased to 5.8 and 5.7, and 0.7 and 0.6 nmol/mg protein (p < 0.5 or p < 0.1) on the 24th day, respectively. Furthermore, the sensory evaluation exhibited that the spiced beef packed by CS films incorporated AKEO at 1.0% had better sensory attributes including taste, color, texture and overall acceptance during the whole storage period. In this study, the aroma components of bead-shaped green teas were compared through headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/olfactometry (GC-MS/O) coupled with chemometrics. A total of 62 volatile compounds were identified in 16 green tea samples. Notably, comparison of GC-MS/O and odour activity values (OAV) results revealed that nonanal, decanal, (E)-2-nonenal, beta-ionone, and 1-octen-3-one were the most powerful aroma-active compounds that contributed to the aroma profile of the bead-shaped green teas. Furthermore, multivariate statistical techniques (such as principal component analysis, partial least squares-discriminant analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis) were used to characterise the bead-shaped green teas according to their geographical origin and the flavour characteristics of their volatile compounds. Additionally, the variable importance in the projection method was used to identify 20 volatile markers that could successfully distinguish bead-shaped green teas on the basis of three flavour characteristics. The results of the analysis revealed that HS-SPME and GC-MS/O coupled with chemometrics can provide an effective method for characterising and classifying bead-shaped green teas.

Bimetallic silver and copper incorporated mesoporous MCM-48 (Ag/CuO/MCM-48) was synthesized by simple wet-impregnation method. The knowledge about its structural properties was gathered by means of Fourier transform-infrared, energy-dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, field emission-scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analyses. The catalytic activity of Ag/CuO/MCM-48 was examined in the one-pot three-component reaction of 3-(1-methyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-3-oxopropanenitrile, malononitrile and various aromatic aldehydes leading to novel pyran-pyrrole hybrid derivatives in reduced reaction times (5-10 min) and excellent yields (88-97%). Application of Ag/CuO/MCM-48 as a potent heterogeneous catalyst with good reusability up to five times, use of ethanol as an eco-compatible medium and chromatography-free work-up are some crucial green aspects of this procedure.

The addition of pi-allylmetal complexes to carbonyls is the most important route to homoallylic alcohols. This study reports the first photocatalytic generation of pi-allyltitanium complexes by a radical strategy. This novel strategy enables the three-component allylation of carbonyls with 1,3-butadiene, providing rapid access to valuable homoallylic alcohols (over 60 examples). The exceptional regio- and diastereoselectivity provided by dual photoredox/Ti catalysis is comparable to that of the Cr-catalyzed Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi allylation reaction.

In search of new active molecules against MCF-7, A549 and HepG2, tetrazole based pyrazoline and isoxazoline derivatives under both conventional and ultrasonic irradiation method were designed and efficiently synthesized. Structures of newly synthesized compounds 5a-h and 6a-h were characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, MS and elemental analysis. Several derivatives were found to be excellent cytotoxic against MCF-7, A549 and HepG2 cell lines characterized by lower IC50 values (0.78-3.12 mu g/mL). Compounds 5b and 5c demonstrated an antiproliferative effect comparable to that of CA-4. Western blot analysis revealed that, reported compounds accumulate more tubulin in the soluble fraction. Docking studies suggested that, binding of these compounds mimics at the colchicine site of tubulin. In vitro study revealed that the tetrazole based pyrazolines and isoxazolines may possess ideal structural requirements for further development of novel therapeutic agents.
