Catalytic transformation of alcohols via metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions is very important, but it typically relies on a multistep procedure. We here report a dynamic kinetic cross-coupling approach for the direct functionalization of alcohols. The feasibility of this strategy is demonstrated by a nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile arylation reaction of benzyl alcohols with (hetero)aryl electrophiles. The reaction proceeds with a broad substrate scope of both coupling partners. The electron-rich, electron-poor, and ortho-/meta-/para-substituted (hetero)aryl electrophiles (e.g., Ar-OTf, Ar-I, Ar-Br, and inert Ar-Cl) all coupled well. Most of the functionalities, including aldehyde, ketone, amide, ester, nitrile, sulfone, furan, thiophene, benzothiophene, pyridine, quinolone, Ar-SiMe3, Ar-Bpin, and Ar-SnBu3, were tolerated. The dynamic nature of this method enables the direct arylation of benzylic alcohol in the presence of various nucleophilic groups, including nonactivated primary/secondary/tertiary alcohols, phenols, and free indoles. It thus offers a robust alternative to existing methods for the precise construction of diarylmethanes. The synthetic utility of the method was demonstrated by a concise synthesis of biologically active molecules and by its application to peptide modification and conjugation. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction of in situ formed benzyl oxalates with nickel, possibly via a radical process, is an initial step in the reaction with aryl electrophiles.

Nonmetallic doped metal oxides can be broad in their visible-light-response range. However, the half-filled or isolated impurity state can also be the new recombination center for photogenerated electrons/holes, which seriously influence the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst in the visible-light region. Therefore, how to prolong the photogenerated carrier life of nonmetallic doping metal oxides is the difficult and challenging topic in the field of photocatalysis. In this work, the hexagonal nanosheets assembled by N-doped C (N-C)-coated N-doped In2O3 (N-In2O3) nanoparticles (N-C/N-In2O3 HS) was obtained by simply pyrolyzing the In(2,5-PDC) hexagonal sheets. The N-C/N-In2O3 HS catalyst exhibit good photocatalytic activity and cycle stability in the long-wavelength region of visible light (lambda = 520 and 595 nm). The effective utilization of long-wavelength visible light for N-C/N-In2O3 HS was mainly attributed to the acceptor-donor-acceptor compensation mechanism between the oxygen vacancy (V-O) and substitutional N-doping (N-s) sites, which made the N-C/N-In2O3 HS possess a continuous band structure, without the half-filled or isolated impurity state in the band gap, and extended its light absorption edge to 733 nm. The compensation mechanism of nitrogen doping on In2O3 can promote the photocatalytic activity under longer-wavelength yellow light (595 nm) irradiation. The N-C layer coated on the N-In2O3 nanoparticles acted as a good acceptor of photogenerated electrons, facilitating the effective spatial separation of photogenerated carriers and extend photogenerated carrier lifetimes. The comparative photocatalytic experiments (N-In2O3 HS and N-C/N-In2O3 HS) show that the presence of N-doped C layer can enhance the photocatalytic efficiency by nearly 10-fold. This double-doping and carbon-coating strategy provided a novel research idea to solve the problem that nonmetal atoms doped metal oxides led to the secondary combination of photogenerated electrons/holes.

Herein, we designed and synthesized an SBA-15 supported 1-methyl-2-azaadamanane N-oxyl (1-Me-AZADO) and investigated its catalytic performance for selective oxidation of alcohols under Anelli’s conditions. The first example of immobilization of 1-Me-AZADO was very important to advance the oxgenation effectively because this supported N-oxyl has excellent catalytic activity for oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds, and more importantly, it can be conveniently recovered and reused at least 6 times without significant effect on its catalytic efficiency.

Thirteen novel palladium(II) complexes of the general formula [Pd(bipy)(O,O’-dkt)](PF6), (where bipy is 2,2′-bipyridine and O,O’-dkt is beta-diketonate ligand hispolon or its derivative) have been prepared through a metal-ligand coordination method that involves spontaneous formation of the corresponding diketonate scaffold. The obtained palladium(II) complexes have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy, ESI-mass spectrometry as well as elemental analysis. The cytotoxicity analysis indicates that most of the obtained palladium(II) complexes show promising growth inhibition in three human cancer cell lines. Flow cytometry analysis shows complex 3e could promote intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and lead cancer cell death. And the suppression of ROS accumulation and the rescue of cell viability in HeLa cells by N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) suggest the possible link between the increase in ROS generation and cytotoxicity of complex 3e. Flow cytometry analysis also reveal that complex 3e cause cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase and collapse of the mitochondrial membrane potential, promote the generation of ROS and lead to tumor cell apoptosis. The interactions of complex Be with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) have been evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence quenching experiments and viscosity measurements, which reveal that the complex interact with CT-DNA through minor groove binding and/or electrostatic interactions. Further, the results of fluorescence titration and site marker competitive experiment on bovine serum albumin (BSA) suggest that complex 3e can quench the fluorescence of BSA via a static quenching process and bind to BSA in Sudlow’s site II.

The addition of pi-allylmetal complexes to carbonyls is the most important route to homoallylic alcohols. This study reports the first photocatalytic generation of pi-allyltitanium complexes by a radical strategy. This novel strategy enables the three-component allylation of carbonyls with 1,3-butadiene, providing rapid access to valuable homoallylic alcohols (over 60 examples). The exceptional regio- and diastereoselectivity provided by dual photoredox/Ti catalysis is comparable to that of the Cr-catalyzed Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi allylation reaction.

We report on the preparation of a series of phosphorusnitrogen donor ligand complexes [M(CO)(4)(PN)], where M = Cr, Mo, W and PN is 2-(diphenylphosphino)-ethylamine. The organometallic compounds were readily obtained upon reacting the respective metal hexacarbonyls with equimolar amounts of the pertinent ligand in the presence of tetraethylammonium bromide. The PN-ligated metal carbonyls were fully characterized by standard spectroscopic techniques and X-ray crystallography. The ability of the title compounds to function as homogeneous hydrogenation catalysts was probed in the reduction of acetophenone and benzaldehyde derivatives to yield the corresponding alcohols. The reaction setup was easily assembled by simply combining the components in the autoclave on the bench outside an inert-gas-operated glovebox system

The selective FeCl3-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling reaction between phenols and primary, secondary, and tertiary 2-aminonaphthalene derivatives was investigated. The generality of this scalable method provides a sustainable alternative for preparing N,O-biaryl compounds that are widely used as ligands and catalysts. Based on a comprehensive kinetic investigation, a catalytic cycle involving a ternary complex that binds to both the coupling partners and the oxidant during the key oxidative coupling step is postulated. Furthermore, the studies showed that the reaction is regulated by off-cycle acid-base and ligand exchange processes.

Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi can improve the growth of pine trees and enhance their tolerance to heavy metal stress, and may also be useful during the afforestation and phytoremediation of polluted regions with pine trees. Hebeloma vinosophyllum (Cr(VI)-sensitive strain) and Pisolithus sp1 ((Cr(VI)-tolerant strain) were selected through liquid culture experiment, and were used in symbiosis with Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii) in pot experiments, to determine their potential for improving phytoremediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soils. Our results indicated that Pisolithus sp1 also had a significantly higher accumulation of Cr than H. vinosophyllum in mycelium under the same Cr(VI) treatments in liquid culture experiment. The tolerance index of Pisolithus sp1 ECM seedlings’ shoots and roots to Cr(VI) were significantly higher than that of H. vinosophyllum ECM and non-ectomycorrhizal (NM) seedlings while the total accumulated Cr per seedling in Pisolithus spl ECM seedlings were 1.50-1.96 and 2.83-27.75 fold higher that of H. vinosophyllum ECM and NM seedlings, respectively, within 0-800 mg kg(-1) Cr(VI) treatments in pot experiments. In addition, the significant differences ratios of photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate and intercellular CO2 concentration between Pisolithus sp1 ECM and NM seedlings were significantly higher than those between H. vinosophyllum ECM and NM seedlings under 400 and 800 mg kg(-1) Cr(VI) treatments. Compared with the control (no plant), and planting NM or H. vinosophyllum ECM seedlings, the planting of Pisolithus sp1 ECM seedlings significantly reduced the percentage content of exchangeable Cr in the soil.
