CuO-WO3-ZrO2, catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method. Structures and surface properties of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction ( XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray fluorescence( XRF), N-2 physisorption, temperature programmed hydrogen reduction (H-2-TPR) , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Addition of WO3 into CuO-ZrO2 induced the transformation of ZrO2 from monoclinic to tetragonal phases, improved the dispersion of CuO species, changed the acid-base properties of the catalysts as well as the catalyst textural features such as surface area and the average pore diameter. As a consequence, the catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol was greatly promoted by the introduction of WO3. For the optimal catalyst containing 10% (mass fraction) CuO and 18% (mass fraction) WO3, the conversion of benzaldehyde and the selectivity to benzyl alcohol reached 94. 76% and 92. 03%, respectively.

This study investigated the accumulation of esters in three hybrid grape cultivars during berry development under two vintages to elucidate the differentiation on their esters biosynthesis. Results showed ‘Moldova’ showed lower esters content than ‘Campbell Early’ and ‘Catawba’ resulting from its limited AAT gene expression and 20 different encoded amino acids. The volatile esters compositions of ‘Campbell Early’ and ‘Catawba’ in both vintages were different. Correlation analysis revealed that concentrations of hexyl acetate, 2-phenethyl acetate, ethyl (E, E)-2,4-hexadienoate and ethyl phenylacetate were related to their corresponding alcohols level, whereas threonine and alanine affected ethyl heptanoate formation. Transcriptome analysis indicated that 1847, 1781 and 1870 DEGs, at E-L 35, 36 and 38, respectively, were characterized between ` Campbell Early’ and ‘Catawba’. The expression level of genes related to the volatile ester precursors biosynthesis, including PRXVIT_ 211s0016g05320, PAO-VIT_217s0000g09100, ACOX-VIT_212s0028g02660, ACOX-VIT_216s0022g01120, echA-VIT_205s0077g00860 and ACOX-VIT_200s0662g00010, exhibited a positive correlation to the concentrations of their corresponding volatile esters.

An investigation of the reaction of heteroatom nucleophiles with ketene dimers, with an emphasis on a discussion of diastereoselectivity where applicable, is described. During this study we focused on the reaction of nitrogen-centred nucleophiles (Weinreb amine, lithiated Weinreb amide, and an amino acid derivative), and oxygen-centred nucleophiles (alkoxides). Simple Weinreb amide derivatives of ketene heterodimers were formed in moderate to excellent yield (up to 89%) and excellent retention of chirality (ee up to 91%), albeit with poor diastereoselectivity. The 2-pyridone-catalysed amine ring-opening was also applied to the asymmetric synthesis of a cinnabaramide A intermediate. Finally, the use of amide and alkoxide ring-opening nucleophiles enabled the development of a sequential one-pot reaction with benzaldehyde to afford delta-lactones in moderate yields (up to 47%) but with good diastereoselectivity (dr up to 24:1). This study presents the benchmark calculations of proton affinities (PAs) and gas-phase basicities (GBs) of 8-para substituted benzaldehyde compounds using the multilevel model chemistries (G3B3 and G4), density-functional quantum model (B3LYP) and ab initio model (MP2). The results show that the computed properties are strongly correlated with the available experimental data. The PAs and the GBs of other eight para-substituted benzaldehyde compounds, for which the experimental data does not currently exist, have been calculated using G3B3 and B3LYP methods. The correlations between the experimental PAs and GBs with the computed properties such as PA, GB, chemical properties (bond lengths, electron density and delta H-1 NMR chemical shift) of the investigated benzaldehydes have been studied and statistically analyzed. The influence of the substituted groups has been discussed in terms of inductive effect and electron donating and electron withdrawing effect. The results obtained show that the chemical properties of the benzaldehyde compounds are controlled by the strong coupling between the -CHO group and the nature of the para-substituent groups through the benzene ring as a conducting linkage.

Catalytic oxidation of alcohols containing heteroatoms with molecular oxygen is usually rather challenging, as transition metal catalysts are easily deactivated by heteroatoms. In contrast to conventional results, herein facile oxidation of 2-pyridinemethanol with dioxgyen was observed over simple vanadium catalysts including VOSO4 or VO(acac)(2), which seemed much easier than that of benzyl alcohol. 2-Pyridinemethanol could coordinate with the vanadium center, which would promote oxidation of 2-pyridinemethanol itself, rather than deactivate vanadium catalysts. This study would provide a new clue to develop efficient catalysts for transformations of heterocyclic compounds.

The irradiation of red light-emitting-diode light (lambda = 660 nm) to 3-acyl-2-methoxyindolizines in the presence of a catalytic amount of methylene blue triggered the photooxidation of the indolizine ring, resulting in a nearly quantitative release of alcohols or carboxylic acids within a few minutes. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, CN for short) is a compelling visible-light responsive photocatalyst. However, its photocatalytic efficiency is low due to the random carrier transfer in planes and insufficient redox potential. Herein, we build oxygen functional group modified sodium-doped carbon nitride (OH/Na co-functionalized carbon nitride) to promote directional transfer of charge carriers for acceleration of separation and enhance redox potential for efficient oxidation of NO in air. Specifically, the function of sodium atoms could control the directional transfer of random carriers from the intralayer to the oxygen functional group-modified surface for the purpose of effectively reducing photogenerated electron-hole recombination. Meanwhile, the modification by oxygen-containing functional groups could adjust the band structure of CN, thereby increasing the oxidation-reduction potential of NO in the photocatalyst. The transformation pathways and reaction mechanism of photocatalytic NO oxidation on CN and OH/Na co-functionalized carbon nitride have also been explicated by ESR spectroscopy and in situ DRIFTS and compared. This work provides a new method for simultaneously controlling the random transfer of carriers and adjusting the energy band structure of CN to optimize its photocatalytic efficiency. It is also possible to extend this strategy to improve the performance of other 2D layered catalysts for photocatalytic oxidation.

The potent aroma compounds in butter from four kinds of Chinese butter hotpot seasoning were first investigated by analyzing the isolates from solid-phase microextraction. A total of 49 aroma compounds were identified, and 23 of them were highly correlated with the aroma profiles of the butter by partial least squares regression analysis. Aroma extract dilution analysis and odor activity value calculations were applied to further reveal the dominant odorants. Fifty-three odorants with flavor dilution factors between 1 and 1024 were identified and OAVs of 17 odorants were greater than 1. Finally, an aroma recombination experiment was prepared by mixing the aroma-active compounds (OAVs > 1), and the aroma profile of the recombination showed good agreement with that of the original sample. Omission tests showed that 2-furfurylthiol, 2-acetylthiazole, anethole, (E)-2-decenal, and 1,8-cineole were the key odorants for the overall aroma of butter.
