Homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalyzed aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol in acetic acid to benzaldehyde was performed in polytetrafluoroethylene microreactors operated under slug flow at temperatures up to 150 degrees C and pressures up to 5 bar. Depending on the bubble velocity and length, a wetted or dewetted slug flow was observed, characterized typically by a complete or partially wetting liquid film around the bubble body. The latter flow suffered from a limited interfacial area for mass transfer. Experiments at temperatures up to ca. 90 degrees C were under kinetic control given no product yield difference under wetted and dewetted slug flows and were used to establish a simplified kinetic expression (first order in benzyl alcohol and zero order in oxygen). This allows to develop a mass transfer model combined with an instantaneous reaction regime that well described the experimental results at higher temperatures where mass transfer was limiting in the dewetted slug flow.

Herein, in the presence of three structure-directing agents (SDAs), a family of imidazole-functionalized resorcin[4]arene-based coordination polymers (CPs), [Zn(TIC4R)(HCOO)]center dot HCOO center dot 0.5DMF center dot 1.5H(2)O (1), [Zn(TIC4R)(CN)]center dot HCOO center dot DMF center dot 2.5H(2)O (2), and [Zn(TIC4R)(H2O)]center dot 2HCOO center dot 2H(2)O (3), were assembled under solvothermal conditions [TIC4R = tetra(imidazole) resorcin[4]arene]. 1 exhibits a double-layer structure with rectangle windows, and 2 and 3 display monolayer structures. The layers of CPs 2 and 3 are slides with different offsets along the a-axis. In addition, three CPs were used as catalysts to catalyze Knoevenagel condensations. A new method for synthesizing phenanthridines by photocyclization has been established. This method does not require inert gas protection, does not require transition metal catalysts and is environmentally friendly, efficient and convenient. It is proposed to use (E)-N,1-diphenylformimines as substrates to synthesize phenanthridine and its derivatives by ultraviolet light, which provides a new synthesis route for further research on the synthesis of phenanthridines by photocyclization. Eight new phenanthridine compounds were synthesized. The confirmation of their structures provides a material basis for further study of their properties and tapping of their potential for applications. Quantum chemical calculations with the M06-2X method were performed to uncover the ozonolysis mechanism of guaiacol and several hydroxylated, methoxylated, and methylated phenols to improve the understanding of the ozone-induced attenuation of phenolic compounds. The detailed kinetic properties were obtained by the transition state theory (TST) and the Rice – Ramsperger – Kassel – Marcus (RRKM) theory. Results confirm that the primary ozonides originated from guaiacol occupy considerably long retention time than the short-lived primary ozonides formed from vinyl-type compounds in the air. The TST rate constant of guaiacol ozonolysis is calculated with a value of 8.81 x 10-20 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at room temperature. The RRKM results prove that the rate constant is positively dependent on temperature but shows no relation with pressure. The reactivity of substituted phenols exhibits a strong correlation with the ozone affinity of carbon atoms and the orbital energy difference (ELo-Hac) between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of O3 and the highest occupied molecular orbital of phenols. The substituents can reduce the value of ELo-Hac and improve the phenols’ reactivity, especially when they locate at the ortho- and para-position. The substituents also improve the ozone affinity of carbon atoms due to the electron-withdrawing effect. The methyl group delivers a moderate impact on the reactivity compared to hydroxyl and methoxy groups.

A quinoxaline-based porous organic polymer (Q-POP) as a mesoporous organic copolymer was developed as a new platform for the immobilization of CuNPs and copper nanocrystals. The prepared materials were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, ICP, TGA, SEM, HR-TEM, EDX, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The obtained catalyst presented extraordinary catalytic activity towards Ullmann C-O coupling reactions with high surface area, hierarchical porosity, and excellent thermal and chemical stability. Due to its high porosity, and synergistic effect of copper nanocrystals incorporated in the polymer composite, the as-synthesized catalyst was successfully utilized for the Ullmann C-O coupling reaction of phenols and different aryl halides to prepare various diaryl ether derivatives. All types of aryl halides (except aryl fluorides) were screened in the Ullmann C-O coupling reaction with phenols to produce diaryl ethers in good to excellent yields (70-97 %), and it was found that aryl iodides have the best results. Besides, due to the strong interactions between CuNPs, N, and O-atoms of quinoxaline moiety existing in the polymeric framework, the copper leaching from the support was not observed. Furthermore, the catalyst was recycled and reused for five consecutive runs without significant activity loss.

Pyrolysis processes are an alternative to minimize the environmental problem associated to agrifood industrial wastes. The main product resulting from these processes is a high-value liquid product, called bio-oil. Recently, the use of comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC x LC) has been demonstrated as a useful tool to improve the characterization of the water-soluble phases of bio-oils, considering their complexity and high water content. However, the precise composition of bio-oils from different agrifood byproducts is still unknown. In the present study, the qualitative and quantitative screening of eight aqueous phases from different biomasses, not yet reported in the literature, using LC x LC is presented. The two-dimensional approach was based on the use of two reverse phase separations. An amide column in the first dimension together with a C18 column in the second dimension were employed. Thanks to the use of diode array and mass spectrometry detection, 28 compounds were identified and quantified in the aqueous phase samples with good figures of merit. Samples showed a distinct quali-quantitative composition and a great predominance of compounds belonging to aldehydes, ketones and phenols, most of them with high polarity.
